Plenty of breeds of regular dog look close enough to a fox to work, and really we don't need an endless list of sub-races and sub-subraces for every minor iteration of appearance on a broadly defined template for a highly abstract game.
Also, there's a race of anthro foxes in the Humblewood campaign setting for 5e (and Humblewood also has the good sense to just say to go with something "close enough" for the races as listed; a porcupine would just use the hedgehog race, the jerboa race also stands for mice, rats, rabbits, and other small prey mammals, the raccoon is as good a fit as any for ferrets or such like...)

Alternate idea for a source of the enmity between Lupin & Werewolves: What if Werewolves were created by experiments ON the Lupin by a dark wizard in an attempt to create an army of sleeper agents to spread chaos & destruction for the wizard's demonic masters. That's why he also added the infectious trait to lycanthropy, to have random agents of chaos helpless to the chaos the transformation would cause. Indeed the same plane hopping dark wizard may have started all they various strains of lycanthropy by doing such experiments on other animal humanoid races like using nezumi to make wererats for example. A plane hopping adventure to track him down to find an ultimate cure for lycanthropy multiverse wide would be an epic quest for Lupin & other races who are potentially confused for lycanthropes.

    • @MichaelHaneline
      @MichaelHaneline 2 года назад +8

Interestingly, in Mystara, the setting that introduced Lupin, the history of lycanthropy IS that it was invented by plane-hopping conquering wizards (the Alphatians).
Though, as said in the video, the canon for that setting is that Lupins came from Lycans and not the other way around.

Arguably you don't call the other members dogs when comparing them to domestic dogs, to avoid confusion, but it's still fair to call them dogs. Just as lions and tigers are cats.

The different ways each deals with Lycan could derive conflict or even a tenuous allyship.

My Lupin Character would be some kind of street mutt Rouge who lived in a major human city and dealt with the dangers Lypins faced during Werewolf and Witch Hunts, yet actually wants to help Werewolves gain control over their transformations since one; People will still go after them both as long as they exist both out of the real dangers and to gain power, and two; Lupins are living proof Werewolves can assert control over their transformations.

i think that angle is most interesting rather than being another tribal. like, I could totally see a bouclear from the witcher kinda feel. like, them going on french nobility style hunts for werewolves, like from that french film brotherhood of the wolf. i mean, i think it would make especial sense that lupins would try to be very different from their original savage werewolf nature by going for an extremely refined sense of decorum and civility and cuisine and stuff.

There is also another dog D&D race unfortunately it's a planeshift race. The khenra of Amonkhet are tall and lean, with graceful
bodies and heads that strongly resemble jackals. Their
snouts are long and sharp, and their angular ears rise
straight above their heads. Their bodies are covered in
dark, sleek hair that ranges from the brown of the desert
sands to ebony black. Despite their sharp teeth, they
consider biting to be an uncouth and unworthy combat
    tactic.
Nearly every khenra is born a fraternal or identical
twin, and a pair of khenra twins forms an extremely
close emotional bond unknown to most other residents
of Amonkhet. The death of one twin in training or the
trials causes a tremendous shock to the survivor, who
typically grows more aggressive and foolhardy in battle. The rare khenra who are born without twins are believed to have killed their siblings in the womb, and are
thus viewed as natural-born initiates, sure to achieve a
glorified death in the Trial of Zeal.
    Strength and Zeal
Many khenra believe that they are created in the image
of Hazoret, and though they venerate all five gods in
the manner of all citizens of Naktamun, they have a
special affinity for the teachings and philosophy of the
god of zeal. These khenra share a deep love of combat, especially hand-to-hand fighting, and they devote
themselves to their training with particular intensity.
The familial bond experienced in the Family Temple of Hazoret’s monument is a part of every khenra’s
experience as one of a pair of twins. As such, these
khenra sometimes think of themselves as Hazoret’s
children even before they finish the fourth trial. For her
part, Hazoret seems to favor khenra among her viziers,
and some say that she shows particular favor to khenra
initiates who survive to reach the Trial of Zeal.
Other khenra choose to distance themselves from
Hazoret and the reckless battle frenzy she encourages.
They devote themselves instead to honing their physical strength, resilience, and adaptability, inspired and
guided by the teachings of Rhonas. These khenra have
a great fondness for wrestling (or tussling, as they often
call it), and they keep careful track of the matches they
win and lose against other initiates. They often seek out
matches against minotaurs, enjoying the challenge of
pitting their sinewy strength against the brute muscle of
    larger and heavier opponents.

Here’s a homebrew race I’ve come up with: Mothkin (human-sized moth people).
-Ability Score Increase: +2 Intelligence, +1 Wisdom.
-Age: Start out as grubs for first 10 years of life, pupate for 1 year, before emerging as an adult for the remaining 55 years, staying in their prime for 50 of those years.
    -Alignment: Gravitate towards neutral.
-Size: 4-5 feet on average and 60-120 lbs. on average, Small-Medium.
    -Creature Type: Monstrosity.
-Speed: 30 ft., fly speed of 30 ft. Can only fly unarmored or wearing light armor and/or a shield.
    -Language: Common, Telepathy 60 ft.
-Darkvision: Can see up to 60 ft. in dim light as if it was bright light, and can see in darkness as if it was dim light. Can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of grey.
-Innate Psionic: Mothkin are innately psychic. Due to this, they can use their Intelligence as their spellcasting ability to cast certain spells innately. Starting at lv 1, they can cast Mind Sliver at will, starting at lv 3, they can cast Charm Person once per short or long rest, and starting at lv 5, they can cast Mind Spike once per short or long rest. As the spells are psionic in nature, conventional anti-magical effects don’t work on them.
-Compound Eyes: Mothkin make all sight-based skill checks with advantage, and have advantage on saving throws against being blinded.
-Natural Armor: The exoskeleton of mothkin increases their AC by 2, unless they’re wearing heavy armor.

The Tabaxi serve this god to protect themselves, and to help themselves live without fear, allowing them to survive in their relatively savage homeland.
The Neeldo, however, are decended from a group of Tabaxi who saught to slay their patron, and as punishment, were turned into Dog-men as a form of "Waking Nightmare".
Despite this, their descendants are relatively chill people, who keep to their own groups, but adapt to other traditions as needed, wirh many finding kinship with the Kalashtar(Which in our world, somehow, became the Native Americans)

I love beastraces and i am absolutely adding Lupins to the list!!
I think that while Lupins can be any breed of dog, they tend to fall into certain categories that function subraces: herding Lupin who tend towards agricultural life, hunting Lupin are very social and are more aggressive hunters than others, guardians (protect their community), Companions (tend to be smaller and tend towards charismatic skills and have a preference for being bards). Pick what type of dog you want to play, look at what they were originally bred for (for example: golden retrievers are Hunters!) and that tells you what your subclass is!
And a hook: Lupin, injured on a hunt...they were bit. Lupin would rather die than turn into a werewolf, if they cannot be cured by the next full moon...they might not make it to see the next one.

I deliberately created him to have a dynamic character development where he goes from being a chill happy guy, to a wreckless killer giving in to urges for revenge and wanted him to eventually find his way back to being a peaceful happy person down the line as his internal struggle with his trauma and grief.

@@BJGvideos halflings that can transform into common house cats. Not as a wildshape either, it’s a natural ability, although in 5e it’d probably be limited how often they could do it, I personally wouldn’t limit how long it lasts.

First saw the lupin in the Red Steel box set back in the day. Loved them then.

So, I was going to make a joke about making a Lupin Rogue with a french accent and who stole from nobility, as a nod to Arsene Lupin, as well as Lupin the 3rd. But then you mentioned They were canonically french, and I lost it.

The lupin is the perfect class for me! In my groups main RPG I'm a magic itens tank, that loyal ability would be great!

I remember seeing 2 dog races in D&D beyond, Lupin and Hundr. I lved Hundr since it listed a Dachshund on it and thus, it won my heart, since I've had doxxie for 15 years (RIP Reiska, fly high)

I liked Mystara. I had the Glantri Box Set. It was interesting. I still use one of the NPCs, regularly, in my games.

The race is very week (only valued at 23 on the DB scale). I would consider increasing their speed to 35 feet, as canine and lupine species are generally faster than other species. I would also consider giving them the Lycanthrope Slayer trait, as it is present in all of the stat blocks, and by the wording of the feature, the species isn't even proficient with their own bite. Also, in the case of the Lupin Sylvar, post VRGtR the Spellcasting trait was listed under actions and formatted the same as the Innate Spellcasting feature, with damaging spells being omitted and replaced with spell attacks listed in the stat block.
Personally, I am not a fan of the reorienting of the stat blocks, as it seems so wrong for a wizard to not cast wizard spells. I don't like the direction WoTC is going with stat blocks, as it adds new layers of complexity for new and old homebrew creators alike who are used to formatting stat blocks the way they had been formatted previously.
Hope everybody who read this far an excellent day!

Edit: "*The Laika were not a fully fleshed-out race...they didn't have their own culture or lore...*" Isn't that every race post-MPMotM?

I definitely agree that the race needs a bit more of a boost.

I could be wrong but I think creatures are always proficient in unarmed attacks by the rules.
I don't remember if that applies to natural weapons as well.

@@marmato9332Sorry, I forgot about that. You are always proficient with your unarmed strikes, although the trait must specify if it is a natural weapon if you are proficient.
