I’m an admin in, and am a member of, many PbP discord server. The Avrae bot and it’s availability to sync with a few Character Sheet version, works really well. I can get a daily dose of DnD this way in between my monthly IRL games, which I run. It is a great medium, and with the right server, can really encourage creative RP descriptions from both players and DM’s.

Awesome! The Avrae bot is a great tip - thanks for letting us know!

@@ZeusRahl where’s a good place to start if I wanna play in 2 or 3 week short adventure and I’ve never done PBP before (but have GMed and have experience with TTRPGs)?

I got low-key upset when I tried to roleplay on Discord between sessions (saves us time for the small character moments that we often don't make time for when we meet to play), and other players responded with "This is something I'd like to roleplay at our next game." We did not have that roleplay moment at our next game. This happened three times before I gave up.

Ouch - great point. I wonder if it would have helped to discuss between session RP during a session zero? Thanks for sharing this though. It’s definitely something I think people will encounter from time to time.

@@GeekPhilosophy my DMs have usually been up for it when I've messaged them between games about things, but players seem to have a hang up about text vs. live. Don't get me wrong, I loved your video and I love using chats between games. I've had other groups that have been more willing to play by post between sessions.

Totally understand! I know it’s not for everyone. I’ve also found myself in situation where 1/2 the group was super into the in between session chat and the other 1/2 didn’t have time for it. I think it’s one of those situations that needs to fit the specific group’s needs. Thanks again for sharing!

Wonderful vid on this topic. There really aren't as many as I imagined.
After seeing a few articles and videos about the topic, I decided to go for this approach for a campaign I started with coworkers during the holidays. Since our schedules never match and I have PbP experience on a pure RP perspective from my teenage years, I settled for Discord. I added the Avrae bot too. We have just started and I'm very excited to see how this plays out. 😊

Neat video! Ever visited RP Nation? I have been involved in Play by Posting for over 10 years. RP Nation is by far my favorite site for that. =)
EDIT: You clearly "thought and took your time" putting this thoughtful and terrific video together! For those who have never gamed with Play-by-Post (PbP), this is THE video to see to introduce them! 8D
And that end quote from Colville knocks it out of the park! *No one* can tell your gaming group's story except you, but first, you have to roleplay the story! Hah! =)

Has been a while since I last played play by post, but I think if I do so again I would use Discord. Since that platform works for me already quite well, dice bots are easy to find and add to a server, and all the other VVT features are usually not really of interest to me, since I am more of a theatre of the mind player anyway.

I think Discord makes a lot of sense too. It’s an easy way to switch back and forth between remote games and PbP too. Thanks for sharing!
