  • The medical profession is a vast field, and we often narrow it down to a few popular domains. There are usually scores of other technical and paramedical personnel we are entirely unaware about but who make up a large part of 'the team.' In short, different professionals work hand in hand to get the job done. The perfusionist is one such professional who plays a vital role during life-saving cardiac surgery.
    Major cardiac surgeries require the heart to be stopped to repair them surgically. The second pair of hands is needed to keep the circulation stable and keep the heart and lungs safe until reattached and rendered functioning again. In such situations, perfusionists perform the function of stabilizing the circulation of the heart and facilitating blood oxygenation, which is otherwise performed by the lungs. Perfusionists do this with the help of a pump oxygenator (heart-lung machine).

    What is difference between cardiac technology and cardiac perfusion technology??

    • @edusanjal
      @edusanjal  3 года назад +6

      Cardiac technology is an allied health profession specifically focused on the diagnosis and management of patients with cardiac and vascular disease.
      On the other hand, Cardiovascular perfusionists are responsible for operating heart-lung machine, during an open-heart surgery or any other medical procedure in which it is necessary to artificially support or temporarily replace a patient's circulatory or respiratory function.

These schools are either run by educational institutes for their tuition fees or Hospitals running these programs for cheap labour. Presently in India there are almost 1400 students getting trained per year where as the requirement for fresher perfusionist is only 150-200 per year. If you take a period of 5 years there will be almost 6000 perfusion students without jobs. Majority of new graduates who do not find employment within two years of graduation will switch their profession as perfusion is usually called a dead end profession.
