Fred Walsen was the founder of walsenburg. Your relatives may have played a good role on its inception.

@Rocky Mountain PBS, any update to this video (noticed it was published in 2015)? Perhaps conduct a follow up piece discussing what new business have arrived since 2015, state of economy, a comprehensive update on results, thanks!

My great grandparents settled in walsenburg before moving to California after the depression. My grandmother and both her sisters were born on the prairie in a tiny little house they built well enough where it's still standing with some basic renovations and improvements in the last 30 years or so. Now they are all passed and buried in the cemetery with 3 total generations of my family represented in the same cemetery. DiMatteo/Hanna family if anyone knew them. I've visited twice over the years both for funerals but I love Colorado. Colorado springs is more my flavor. Walsenburg felt very run down and abandoned.

The trouble with Walsenburg is in this entire piece not one person of hispanic or latino decent was shown, and yet 57% of the population of Walsenburg is hispanic/latino. Perhaps there would be a little more buy in for revitalizing the town from the locals if there was more inclusion.
I went to Walsenburg a few months ago to scope out a property. I'm white, and it did take a second for people who aren't white to sniff me out and all, but by the end of the trip I had a whole mess of locals talking with me about what the city needs, why they're frustrated, how tired they are of white folks coming in to take over land and property that has meant something for decades to their families and community. Maybe could be why people don't seem so friendly?
Obviously as a white person considering a move to Walsenburg, I'm not saying don't move there. I'm saying respect those who have held that town down for decades and listen to them when you get there. I met some really cool people who are just as concerned about their home as you will be. Don't white savior the place... build together.
And with that... I'm totally starting a yoga studio and tea bar there. Whitest thing ever.

All the cannabis tax money has been squandered. Oh, and the additional and unnecessary rule changes in '21 have led to year over year decline in revenue for both med and rec

So many failed business's. Unfriendly local people. They'll work hard to make you feel unwelcome. Skip Walsenburg.

D Cole They resent prosperity. Could be why the town doesn't prosper. Crazy, I know...

Holy cow, I was all excited that they let you build tiny homes in Walsenburg. I am still going to visit and spend a couple days there and see for myself.

Yea, they say they're going to build a lot of things in Walsenburg. Never happens.

Well that would be a good thing for me, I am just looking for a cheap place to buy a plot of land and build a tiny home to retire to. I am not a fancy guy at all.

Charlie The Tuna If you're seriously thinking of moving to the area, don't buy property within the city limits of Walsenburg. Most of the amicable people in Huerfano County do NOT live in Walsenburg. If you're looking for friendly neighbors, try La Veta or Garder. Avoid Walsenburg at all costs. It's a terrible place. They totally lied about the cookies.
