    I was drawn to Medford knives when I was younger, looking at high end knives as cool objects. But when i started buying knives to carry and use I quickly came to prefer slim and slicey.

    Hey man, I know Medford gets a fair amount of hate and an equal amount of fan boy love. But the slim midi is a great line of knives by Medford, hard to deny. I’m sure you’ll end up enjoying using this knife. It’s one of my favorite daily users. Glad you always keep an open mind, curious to see how your first impressions and full review pan out. As always, thanks for the content.

    Outstanding review. Clearly see the dislike for the manufacturer influencing your opinion as you briefly stated in the intro. Appreciate the honesty. I value your opinion and almost dismissed this knife because of your thoughts. I'm going slim midi - has every quality, tolerances and craftsmanship of every knife loved by the community.

    Wow, that exposed detent track and proud lockup area when closed are such bizarre design decisions. Especially for a knife that starts at $500, and goes up from there with options.

    • @andrewkelley6039
      @andrewkelley6039 3 года назад +2

      would the detent track being exposed make lubrication/oiling easier? maybe? idfk, that is weird

    • @ZPositive
      @ZPositive 3 года назад +2

      @@andrewkelley6039 my best guess is that Medford was trying to increase the blade to handle ratio by moving the pivot forward. And doing that will always make it harder to conceal the detent features. But I'm sure there are still some tweaks left on the design room floor that could've cleaned up this area of the knife.

    • @beardedgear
      @beardedgear  3 года назад +4

      If anything you’re gonna need to add lubricant more often because it’s gonna come off when the blade is open and it’s exposed 🤣

    • @ZPositive
      @ZPositive 3 года назад +1

      @@beardedgear for sure. But I've found that some knives have a light enough detent ball pressure that they don't seem to need oil. But some high pressure detents absolutely do need oil to not feel gritty. How heavy is the detent ball pressure on this knife?

    • @beardedgear
      @beardedgear  3 года назад +1

      It’s not an overly stiff detent, doesn’t seem to rely heavily on lube

    I've spent over $3000 on Medford knives previously; a full size Praetorian, an Infraction and a Proxima.
    I was never blown away by the first two, they were just okay. The Proxima had major detent issues though, the blade would easily pop open without any force - happened in my pocket more than once in one afternoon.
    Contacted Greg. He was rude, arrogant and told me to shut up within 2 minutes of talking. So, I sold them all and moved on.
    Personally his knives are not so amazing that I would ever want to deal with a cranky dwarf like Greg again and have a confrontation over a legitimate issue. There are so many great makers out there nowadays, no one needs to deal with makers who aren't pleasant to deal with, especially after spending thousands of dollars on their products.
    Also to note. The 187 is from his budget line and I wouldn't touch one of those if someone paid me to take one. You'd be far better off with a PM2 for 1/3 the price or an XM18 for around the same price.

    Everyone is certainly allowed their opinions and I'm certainly not a Medford fanboy. But speaking from someone who has worked in the construction and building industry for the better part of my life I see the 187 as a purpose built knife make to be virtually indestructible and more likely even meant to be used wearing gloves which would completely eliminate any reason to get picky over the handle shape or even possible sharp edges. It's also not meant to be an EDC knife for your everyday person especially not a person who is looking for pocket jewelry or a fidget toy with the smoothest deployment ever. Also Medfords are built to rediculous standards when it comes to the tight action . That always gets better with time and with time it absolutely can be easily flicked open with one hand without trouble. The issue I feel with certain issues people have is they are coming at it from an EDC perspective instead of a purpose built hard use tool that can stand up to the elements without needing to be serviced regularly like a bearing knife would be. And yes a hydraulic action and feel is absolutely what should be expected on all washer medford models. Those who have reviewed this knife looking at it for what it was designed to be a hard use tool ,not an easy to carry silky smooth toy that only gets used to cut cardboard and open new knife packages have all truly liked the 187 and I myself agree . Which ofcoarse is just my opinion as we are all welcome to have. Now as for hating a company because you disliked one of there knives and because of people hurting your feelings defending it. Well that is shitty that you would allow others to help support a biased approach when reviewing new knives and the exact opposite of what anyone who is looking for honest opinions should be looking for in a reviewer. My humble opinion.

    I really like the Slim Midi. I have a couple. The new ones now have an torx for the pivot. I know all the ones I have seen lately including the Monkey Edge MEFP one I just had come the other day and the new s90v DLT ones. That S stands for s35vn with Medford and 9 for s90v, 3 for 3v, D for D2. I really like the Pretorian Slim too those are probably my 2 favorites from Medford. I have some others I don't really like but I got them for prices so cheap I couldn't say no the On Belay and Proxima I got both of those plus my first Slim Midi for $750 total for all 3 and all were new in box from a friend of mine's son. He knew I was into knives and his son had a half dozen or so Medfords he had tried to sell me forever and always wanted retail prices so no way then he was in need of cash a couple years ago so I got them $250 each. I paid about as much for the Slim Midi I just got as I paid for all 3 of those others. I love my Vehement Mongrel too which was made by Medford only thing is its way to thick behind the edge. I have heard a v2 was coming hope its ground thinner only way I would consider spending $525 on a 2nd one is if they grind that thing thin no need for it to be a damn axe.

      @AmericanPride I’d prefer my knives be good at cutting things and most of Medford’s blades are overly thick with girthy bte thicknesses. There are a few slim designs but they’re fugly and his prices are silly for what he’s offering. Score for the folks that like them, less competition to get them. @@NathanKrick The 3v are marked with a 3. At least the ones I have do including this MEFP tanto I just got in the mail a couple days ago. Nice they have a torx pivot now too. Not sure when that changed my other Slim Midi and all my other older Medfords have the proprietary pivot. DLT has a bunch of s90v Slim Midi right now well most versions are sold out but they still have a bunch. I almost bought one but they dropped about the same time my Monkey Edge came in the mail so didn't really need to buy 2 Slim Midi in one week when I already had some from before lol. At least I can justify the one I just got because its a PVD Tanto and the only PVD or tanto I have from Medford and its a cool frag pattern and goes with my Hinderers and Shiro I got from Monkey Edge just need a damn MEFP SnG to go with them or SmF whatever just want one and I want one of the CRK Zaan MEFP too just the MEFP stuff is damn near impossible to get I just got lucky and got the Slim Midi and Eklipse warncliffe within a few days of each other got lucky both times.
