  • Col Joye takes us to the now-overgrown site of the Sydney Stadium in Rushcutters Bay where he and his Joy Boys showed the biggest rock stars of the day a thing or two about sending an audience wild (and where Connie Francis gave her heart to The Golden Boy).

Hi Glenn, fantastic & informative video about the old Sydney Stadium, I'm a hardcore Beatles fan & have visited Rushcutters Bay quite a view times over the years & have luckily accessed from inside the Sydney grammar school sports ground a while ago & found the original commemorative plaque situated on a grass area right underneath the eastern suburbs railway overpass, this is probably where the old boxing ring/centre stage was?, my late Dad saw Johnny 0'Keefe & Johnny Ray at the stadium in the late 50's but I would love ❤️ to go into a time machine back to June 18th 1964 to see The Beatles concert?, that would've been such an eventful experience for anyone who loves not only The Beatles but Rock & Roll full stop!, also The Rolling Stones, The Easybeats, The Beach Boys, The Monkees & The Who!, all those concerts would've been enough to blast the corrugated iron roof off the top of the old place with the unbelievable volume of music & screams!, such a shame the old stadium is long gone, I was only 3 years old when it was demolished & the only first original reminder of that place was the Australian released "Beatles For Sale" vinyl album featuring The Beatles on stage on the album cover!... and of course 3 plaques?... 2 on the footpath outside the sports ground gates & the original almost hidden away underneath the railway overpass, honestly I reckon that's a dumb spot for the plaque & Woollahra council should have erected it near the traffic light crossing opposite Rushcutters Bay Park cos that's exactly where the stadium main entrance was?, after it's demise we had the Horden Pavilion as the main concert venue until the Sydney Entertainment centre was built in 1983, now THAT'S also demolished!, but the old Sydney Stadium was so historic they should've save the place by digging deeper underground for the roads & railway link & made some renovations to the old stadium by replacing the old corrugated iron roof & walls with big soundproofing improvements??, but no the government just tore everything down including Bayswater Road to dig through a new road & railway tunnels & basically destroyed a part of Sydney's history!, progress sucks!!👎

I loved the stadium shows... preceded by a hamburger at Rushcutter bowl.

That is so funny - a plaque behind a fence between two busy roads...speaks volumes about this town...great series Glenn!

It was sixty years ago last week that the Fabian show was on at The Sydney Stadium. There is a RUclips video featuring Johnny O'Keefe, The Deejays, and The Delltones performing "Shout", which was taken from that show. Thanks for posting these videos.
