  • Welcome to the UniLab, UniLand’s very own science show, that explores the wonders of the Universe. Move over Bill Nye the Science Guy, there are new scientists in town! We’ll be breaking down some complicated STEM/STEAM lessons by doing our own DIY experiments and explorations, perfect for you to do at home or show off at your school science fairs! So grab those safety goggles and have an adult nearby so we can visit the UniLab.

    🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴SEDIMENTATION LESSON 🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴
    ✍🏼OBJECTIVES📝
Students will be able to do the following:
    • Define sedimentation ✅
    • Understand what causes sedimentation to occur. ✅
    • Recreate the science behind sedimentation. ✅
    😳WHAT IS SEDIMENTATION?😱
Dig down deep in the ground and you’ll find all of the elements that make this 🌎 a solid one. From simple gypsum to complex sedimentary rocks that create the world around us. But where does it all come from? 🤔
Whenever it rains 💦, sediments are washed into our streams, lakes, rivers, and oceans. 🌊The faster water moves🏃🏽, the larger the sediments that are pulled along for the ride. 💎 This all happens because of gravity. Sediments are composed of both living and non-living material like soil, gravel and even a few organic materials. As water 💧🌊decreases, erosion occurs which means that the heaviest sediments drop away. This process creates deposits of sediment called sandbars and deltas. The process of erosion and depositing can be a long one. Sometimes it can take thousands or even millions of years to take effect. 😵
So what is sedimentation? 🤷🏾‍♀️Sedimentation is the process by which particles suspended in a fluid, like water after a rainfall, eventually come to rest due to the forces, such as gravity, 🚀 acting upon them. So let’s try to recreate this process with Geode Eggs.

    ➡️➡️➡️🥚12 Geode Eggs🥚⬅️⬅️⬅️
    INGREDIENTS:
    • 6 clean and dried egg shells cut in half 🥚
    • ½ tbsp. White school glue
    • A paintbrush 🖌
    • Food coloring
    • A large heat-safe container (like a mug) ☕️
    • Alum powder (found in the spice section of the grocery store)
    • 2 cups Hot water (& an adult to handle it for you)
    RECIPE:
    • With the help of an adult cut 6 eggs in half.
    • Clean and dry your egg shells until dry to the touch. Remove any extra pieces of eggshell so you have a nice, clean surface.
    • Once dry, grab your white school glue and a paintbrush and spread a thin layer of glue on the inside of your eggshells.
    • Pour some alum powder into your now glue-covered eggshells until they are completely covered.
    • Leave out for 20 minutes to dry.
    • While the glue dries, grab your heat-safe container and pour a half a tablespoon (or more) of food coloring into it. Remember, the more you use, the brighter your eggshells will appear.
    • Ask an adult to carefully pour 2 cups of close to boiling water into your heat-safe container.
    • Add ¾ cup of alum powder and mix well until everything is dissolved.
    • Once everything is dissolved, place your eggshell in the container very carefully.
    • Let eggs sit in your solution for 12 to 15 hours or longer. The longer you leave them in the solution - the more the process of sedimentation will occur.
    • Enjoy your geodes.
    👩🏼‍🏫LESSON REVIEW 😜
    • What happened to your eggshell? Describe the changes that your eggshell went through.
    • How does the eggshell transformation relate to sedimentation? Explain the process your eggshell went through.
    • When does sedimentation occur in real life?
