My mind was boggled too, at first, when it didn't unravel when you cut it! 😮 But pretty quickly I realized that that's because what you are actually doing in each row is what's called "binding off" in knitting terminology. Usually, you bind off only on your final row in knitting, so that the stitches won't unravel. But the way the K-Tel knitter works, EVERY row is actually a bind-off row, so that you're left with no live stitches (except one), and then you pick up the unworked front loop of each row of stitches (which becomes the back row each time you turn your work) and knit through it, binding off again, and so on, and so on. So when you cut in between the rows, you're only cutting that one row. It is very convenient for making something like a buttonhole or a poncho head opening, but I would fear that the one cut strand/ row COULD eventually continue to unravel, all the way down to the end of that row and beyond, even if the other rows don't unravel. Now that I know how to use it, I'll have to try my Imra-Loop (the German/European version of a K-Tel knitter, it's exactly the same tool actually) and see whether that actually does happen or not. Thanks for a fun tutorial!
@@Goldenretriever-k8mI did. It worked. I actually didnt use a proper tool. Just a big enough steel yarn needle. It was a pain to get used to but its doable. And can be cut through without unraveling. It still feels like sorcery...
Hello thank you for the tutorial on the K-tel knitter. I have my Moms original one.and haven't played with it. Until I found my kitten playing with it today. Need practice big time. I remember her making me.a pink scarf. It was quiet long I could wrap it around my body. It ended up saving my life. When I was 8 I fell through the ice on a pond the scarf caught on the ice. This is how the pulled me out. I will never forget that scarf. She never made another one. But kept this knitter. So thank you. ❤
Awesome! I've had a K-Tel Knitter in my crochet kit for since 1989. It belonged to my grandma and when she passed on I inherited her crochet kit. It's just a single knitter, not the whole kit. Until today I had no idea how to use it. I had thought, many times, about throwing it away; but, something kept making me change my mind. It might be because it was my grandma's or it might be out of curiosity that I might figure out how to use it someday. Now I'm glad I kept it. I'm going to try and find the whole kit. Who would have thought, 30 years ago, that one day you could watch how to videos from a phone let alone learning how to use a knitter from 60 years ago. Thanks for posting this video. I hope more is to come.
What an amazing idea, and the fact that you can cut thru it is magical! When I crochet, my tensioning hand always gets tired before my hook-holding hand does, so this method of crocheting is so promising for being able to crochet for longer, since I wouldn't need to tension the yarn! Thank you so much for preserving this little corner of crochet history - I loved "Knooking" for its innovative and unconventional approach, and so was delighted to discover the K-Tel/Easyloop needle.
Would love to see more videos on the different stitches, especially with the EasyLoop! My daughter keeps giving up in the middle of learning to crochet a chain. I think she'd love this!
I just heard of this tool from someone else. Your daughter was like mine when she was trying to learn how to crochet when she 8. She's 22 now. She, thankfully, gave up when she was 8 (she would get extremely angry about it) and later taught herself how to crochet when she was 14. Thank goodness for RUclips!
I bought a K-tel Knitter from Goodwill for just a few cents as they sell by weight. It originally cost $1.49 at Pic-n-Save according to the price tag! 😀 So, I found your awesome video to learn about the product. Nice job! Thanks.
Thank you for this clear tutorial! Thanks to you showing every step in such detail, I was able to wrap my head around this and figure out how to replicate it with regular crochet. For anyone wondering, because the work is held on the opposite side from normal crochet, the back loop with "fauxchet" is the front loop with normal crochet. So the Simplicity stitch is essentially front loop slip stitching, in traditional crochet. Also made a little test swatch to try out cutting in the middle, and found that it does work, but besides the little scraps you need to pull out there will also be a tail at either end. One of those tails will tend to unravel a bit, but if you pull it through one loop it'll tighten down into a slip knot. Then you just need to weave in the tails and you have your hole!
Hello Leticia, I have a K-Tell knitter, not the whole kit, just one of the knitter sticks. I've had it for many years, inherited from my grandma, but the thing was a mystery to me until I found your video. After I saw your video I searched for a kit, off and on, for months. Well, yesterday, I found one and today, it's on its way to me. What a rare find it was! I thank you for posting this video and revealing the mystery item in my chrochet kit.
Thank you for making this demo video. I just got the ktel knitter in a box of things at an auction. It was complete but I found the pictures in the book confusing - your demo has made everything clear.
I was just looking through my mom’s needle craft box and found one of these. I tried going off the pictures, which didn’t help me much so naturally I came to RUclips. Here you were, and boy was I glad. It’s way easier watching you than it was trying to follow the drawings. Thank you. Maybe I’ll give it a try and make a pot holder, just so I can say I’ve used it. 😂
I just found a pair of k-tel knitters at a thrift store for 50 cents. Both size needles were there, but they were not in their original packaging. The word that caught my attention was KNITTERS. so I thought that I'd buy them even though I had no idea how to use them. I googled how to use the k-tels and this video was the first tutorial I found. As far as learning new stitches, YES PLEASE! THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEO. 🙂
reason it has two prongs at the back is because it actually a knitting machine transfer tool that has been repurposed and sold at 2 -3 times the cost as a easy loop tool. most likely that is a chunky machine tool as standard gauge would be thinner (so for 4 ply yarn instead)
Thanks for this demonstration I have the easyloop and with crochet you can handle easily with your work and the tool but with easy loop I was struggling it got tangled up but there was something you demonstrated I could cut through without it unraveling most of the time I tried to take it apart like Crochet it wasn’t easy at all thanks so much for this demo
I dd not have this as a kid and have seen the crazy loop advertised. It is crazy easy!!!! You will be whipping up some stylish goodies in record time..which you will need with your new grand baby. :)
I found my original K Tel knitters a dew years ago and could not remember how to use them. And, believe it or not, I didn't see the name on them so I couldn't find out anything about them. I was just going through my needles and hooks again and thought I need to find out what these are. I happened to be near a sunny window and saw the name. Bingo, I found your tutorial! Thanks for showing that it is the same as easyloop which I hadn't heard of before. I'm sure going to play with this again! May be good for my grand daughter's first needlecrsft!
Hi, Happy Holidays!... This is awesome!... I was really surprised when you cut the sample and the yarn didn't revel loose... I am a crocheted and my grand daughter is also learning. I know this is an old video, and you probably don't use this tool much now, but I'm sure you could use a small rubber band around the Easy Loop and use that as a stopper. I'm surprised they didn't include one with the tool, though.
Made With Love by Glama, i gave the Vintage one. I have it for about 5 years and never knew it it was. It came witgh some yarn someone gave me but now i am glad i have tge Vintage one. Will try this one and hopefully order the other one you was ising.

Do you have videos of the other stitches with this tool? I designed and 3D printed a tool based off the K-Tel knitter and am trying to figure out how to use it and do different stitches.
I've done some preliminary tests just using a large darning needle, and it does seem to work. Not quite as well, since the needle isn't designed for it, but the principle is the same. Just use the eye end of the needle rather than the pointed end.
Thank you!! I have one of those oldie but goodie Ktel hooks from back in the day. May just have to dust it off & give it a go. Love that you can cut the fabric. So many possibilities with that. its blowing my mind too. think about knitting a sweater in the round and then using this for front and then cutting it into a jacket
@@CC_Reads It doesn't work that way, you need to cut parallel to how rows are added.

Maybe the 2 on the bottom is for when you use double yarn or 2 different color yarns at the same time?
