- I bought a cheap John Cooper Works R56 Mini Cooper, but it's got some big problems. It won't move at all and fluid is pouring out of the transmission. Today we're tearing apart my donor Mini Cooper S to grab a new transmission and get the JCW back on the road.

You can absolutely option one without the aero side skirts. Both my R56 JCW and R55 Clubman JCW were optioned without them from factory

I think JR has the right mix and business model, there is so much crap and dud cars out there with owners not disclosing major issues. Parting out and expecting bad buys and selling good ones is the way to go.

Savage! Scrapping a whole car for parts is next level, but totally worth it for the JCW resurrection. Love how you guys turned a parts car into a free engine and a bunch of extra cash.

You gotta have part donor's, because the neglected and abused JCW needs some love. I was parting out a very rough cj5 in my driveway, and the only thing left, was a bare engine and trans sitting on the frame, no steering wheel or gear. A guy pulled up asking to buy it lol. I told him it's a donor for a 54 m138a1. I got the far gone 55 trading a set of tires, and a co2 argon tank for it, just for any future parts i might need, because parts are worth a lot of money, no matter what you're selling. You guy's will still profit on what's left on that donor mini. I would buy parts from you, because you don't just part stuff without knowing if it's good or not. Happy Easter, and G-d bless.

Hmm, should be looking at the dual round exhaust tips on all JCWs that I've seen anyway. Glad you finally found all the rolly carts you deserve! (I only suggested that a few years ago now)

BTW, that wiggle to get the subframe and suspension to release while removing the engine, I know that well. Kinda have to do it again while putting it back

FESM on Minis is very cool. You basically have to do it to do anything, but once you do you can do everything.
I think I'd cut and run. If you really want one start with a nicer example with the supercharger.
Yep… i special ordered mine in 2006 and it has been a pretty flawless vehicle…..its only fault to date and 50,000 miles has been a clutch that started acting suspicious so i just swapped it out, even the original battery lasted over 10 years!🙂
@@noonehere1793I bought a 1993 Nissan Maxima in 1994 the OEM tires lasted 70,000 miles. Crazy reliable. It only had 13,000 on it when I bought it from the dealership. They called it a program car but it wasn't driven much.
I had an 09 Clubman S with this lovely n14. After dumping 10k into it over 3 years, I had enough. Hunted 6 months to find an 05 R53 that was taken care of. 15 months later couldn’t be happier. This is not the one you want to try and save. If the aluminum rear trailing arms are up for grabs, I know of a r53 that could use the upgrade 😁
Agreed. It's already going to have the wrong transmission and a bunch of parts from an S, killing it in the resale market.
Unless I did the math wrong he will have a running and driving JCW for $2500. Even with the mixed parts he could easily get $5000.
I would think that you could tell whether the car was a real JCW by looking at the VIN number. On Porsche's you can tell whether a car is the plain version versus the S or GTS this way, the 12th and 13th digits correspond to the specific model.
You can fix Mini’s and C5s everyday and we will watch

Just a heads up. Keep in mind the front frame arms that support the engine… those can be a sought after part as many of these vehicles are front end collisions and the arms are engineered to collapse.
Long story short - see if you can remove the arms to offer on eBay. You may get a bite. The new ones are not cheap and last time I ordered ones from Mini it took a few weeks to get in as they were shipped from Germany.
My first R53 I bought new driver side arm so my body shop could cut and section in new but factory formed metal after the previous owner was in a minor fender bender which totaled the car.
Just a thought. Not sure what you get per pound for the metal but you might get $100 each for a good end to section into a damaged R56.
One more time… go 2005/2006 R53 with the next Mini. Easier to work on, lots of parts available, can get to 240HP quick and not too expensively. Better motor than the R56 generation. Owned four R53 since 2018 rebuilt five. Flipped two for quick profit to buy the fourth. Great little fun cars. There is one on Copeart in Oklahoma City this week! Slicktop as well.
I had a 1st gen Cooper S. It was way more fun than I expected it to be. Never had any problems with it. Someone hit me and totaled the car. They’re very fragile but a blast to drive.

If you've actually got all the parts you need already then sure may as well try to fix it, and if it doesn't work out then you can junk it.
Difference between cooper s and jcw front and rear bumpers brakes rims sills in terms of engine you have it must be n14 which had some problems and then later corrected n 18 with some improvements even so it is not a good engine in terms of engine internals 211 CV has had some changes and is an engine widely used in Europe

Factory jcw’s come with factory lsd.
No they do not. R56 JCWs have a brake based electronic system, and an open mechanical differential. You could only get an LSD as an option on the N14 Cooper S...

I had a 2011 JCW, and that exhaust is not the original.
Also that isn’t a stock jcw exhaust. It would have been a dual tip, and just a resonator. The stock s exhaust has a 2nd smaller cat and resonator.
I'm so confused. 1st you rebuild cars and complain you lose cash 2nd, you go into chop shop mode only to go back to rebuilding?
