Finding the simplest "essence" of an art, that still contains the whole, is the life long struggle of all artists. I'd argue that you are tuning into Bagua's essence. Thanks for sharing....

Same thing with Karate (Te). Started in Okinawa before it was part of Japan. Okinawa is an island only 68 miles long. All karate was really the same but different masters had their personal differences/preferences and there some regional differences. Later generations would say 'I do Master Jones version', Well, I do Master Smiths version' and later generations formalized these into 'styles'.

Thank you for your perspective, Sifu. For instance opening ones mind to the different ways of mud walking is an important attribute to apply to different areas of ones life. Forrest

Luo de Xui is the man.. was top student from the Hung brothers ..although he would never say that.. in all the years ive been training around Tai chi masters and seminars etc and from different arts..ive never seen the stuff he d bust out..truly an education especially in the so called "internal Arts ".

I've never met Luo de Xui so I can't say. There are many knowledgeable masters in the internal arts and I wish I could meet them all. One thing that is curious to me is that it is rare to find a student that has owned for themselves the teachings that their masters have taught. Maybe there is something that is ignored by most students? It must be a very valuable thing.

Even the original bagua has more than one style it started off as the 8 animal system and other forms all in separate unlinked sections. His students and other masters of the art created complete forms by taking separate sections and putting them together as to emulated the inner flow of chi. Dong haichuan may very well have created the separate sections but they were certainly put together by others. And some of his students creates extra forms just as good as the ones taught to them initially.

The 'ba gua' lies within every human body. How the energies of ba gua manifest is dependent upon the human's skill....

These days, the style is pretty evenly divided between Pre-Heaven & Post-Heaven methodologies. These are distinctively different in training principles, which will affect short and long term goals. I train circle walking by beginning turning to the left; walking in reverse of Pre-heaven. Yin Fu's turning is this way. This is characterized by a long transition from a "Hard-soft" style to a "soft-hard style". Hard-soft defined as a focus on the physical, and move towards the softer connective tissue/energetic work over a lifetime of training. Soft-Hard trains the latter, first; cultivating greater strength over time through the softer connective tissue/energetic work.

Thanks for commenting. Over the years (I've been training for 60) I have seen and heard so many differing ideas on how one should practice Baguazhang so I just follow Dong Haiquan's method of teaching Longfist first before focusing too much on specific Baguazhang skills. Soft and Hard interplay. You can't really have one before the other. We train them together. Yin Fu did the same.

Ba gua is part of the 3 in 1 system that was integrated into what was called Nei Jia in the late 19th century. All Nei Jia is formally defined by the 5 Principles and the 3 Characteristics. This was the fundamental teaching taught at the centre of excellence that was the school at the Temple of Fire God in 1920’s Beijing. There is, therefore no ‘style’. Either you are attempting to practice the 5 Principles and 3 Characteristics or you are not. Ba Gua emphasises one aspect of the Nei Jia. How can 8 (Ba Gua) be 5 (hsing i) be a multitude (Tai Chi)? That’s because One Principle underlies them all. Understanding the tool kit that this gives you allows you insight.

Thanks. Another one amongst the many interesting stories and legends regarding Baguazhang. For sure, Baguazhang came to Beijing with Dong Haichuan. I am told that the essence of Baguazhang transcends Nei Jia or Wei Jia... that it recognizes the all... that it belongs to the "Complete Truth". On and on... the truth that can be spoken is not the complete truth.
