She's amazing, she just doesn't pronounce "Jazz" like Americans do--like the doctor has you stick out your tongue and say "aaaah." I was told we Californians make "aaah" 2 syllables long. And like Valley Girl talk, the rest of America has picked up on it without thinking about it. But other cultures think it's gross, the was we "aaah." Not "ah." Not like "chocolate." But aaah." like "rat."
She does a whole monologue in her cabaret act about the Shubert organization and a character she calls "hand" because it's just hand coming from behind the desk and saying "Ute, we want you to go to Vegas for Chicago etc" and Hand is wearing rings studded with the teeth of dead Broadway gypsies. It's quite a scathing take on the Shubert organization and the cash cow that Chicago turned into. And I was thinking how does she get away with this? Then she finished the song with a huge belt and high notes I've not heard anyone sing except maybe Chita Rivera and I said , that's how. A month later I saw ads for Chicago on buses saying Ute Lemper is back on Broadway. She broke every taboo in her cabaret act. She's German so don't bring up Hitler, she made jokes about Hitler, something like Hitler shut the F up or some one line that knocked everyone over, then it's America so don't joke about Christianity or smoking 🚬, she managed to combine the two, and then on to the Shubert organization.
She’s a good singer! But, Chicago is a very American story and they had a very particular way of speaking in that era and subculture (Mae West is a good example). She doesn’t sound like what the character should sound like.
She has the perfect style for this kind of Musical. she was one of the must fabulous Velma Kelly in this musical.. the fabulous Ute Lamper, she is a leyend
Ladies and Gentlemen: we are talking about Ute Lemper, a Lawrence Olivier winner. If she does sing the way she does - and true: for an american who hears that it sounds really strange - one can be sure, that there must be a reaosn why she sings that way. So please, let's respect the professionality those artists and again: she is UTE LEMPER, she is where she is because she worked her a.. off for that. Thank you.
M. M. We ALL worked out assets off in this production. Americans are better at dancing artistry. I'm a pro of 27 years and Roxie is my part. Mind you, I started at 3 years old waddling around the wooden floors in classes. Holla!!!
I don’t know what people are talking about either! This was the first video I saw and every other actress after was nothing like Ute. Eventually I’ll fall down the Broadway rabbit hole on RUclips and search for her performances.
Very silly to compare a movie to a live performance. First of all singing and dancing at the same time you are not going to have a pristine vocal performance. Ms. Jones and Ms. Zellweger were able to do it because they sang standing still in a sound studio and that was layered over whatever vocal they did onset. Its kind of understood that livve theater sacrifices elaborate sets and costumes in exchange for a performance withthe actors right in front of you. Chicago is about the dance the acting and the story. For big elaborate spectacle you should opt instead The Lion King or Le Miserable. Or stick to movies of plays rather than the plays themselves.
I had seen the movie prior to watching it on Broadway. I had the notion that I wouldn’t enjoy the live show anymore. To my pleasant surprise, it was wonderful. Loved it so much!!
I like this, and some of you that didn't like it and expected more from a broadway production are wrong you know why? Because Chicago is known by be a musical about dancing and songs and the voices no the production!
First. This isn't a Broadway production. Its a production from London's West End. The actress, Ute Kemper, I believe, is an incredibly accomplished star there. Second. I saw a docu where they filmed this production in rehersal. This poor woman worked her ass off to get this done. So much so it brought a producer (a PRODUCER) to tears. She had to work with the likes of, Ann Reinking, not a pushover by any stretch of the imagination. So she probably shouldn't be dismissed out hand for an award show excerpt of the show. And FYI, Velma Kelly isn't supposed to be a pretty young thing. She's supposed to be a woman with a years and a few miles on her. If anything Ms. Jones was too young to play her. Again, for dance its Fosse. For spectical, try Andrew Loyd Webber.
I programed the lighting desk for this show. Ute is and never could be a 'poor woman' I defy any person to be within 5 feet of her and not be affected. A star.
532bluepeter. I only say "poor woman" in refering to the documentary about the rehersals for this show. She didn't think that she could do it. Ann Reinking and the producer i mentioned kept after about masking her accent. She was struggling with wanting to be home with her family. And she wound up crying quite a few times before opening the show to rave reviews, I believe. I simply meant that she jumped a lot of hurdles to do this show. And she shouldn't be trashed for one excerpt.
Jayjen35 I have no problem with older actresses...I have a problem with lame choreo and "jizz". If she only said it once I would overlook it but she says it over and over...so bad
What’s the issue with her the way she pronounced it? You have never heard someone prounce a word in a slightly quirky way or a way that recalls the accent of their birth country? Doesn’t bringing a real life quirk to a role make it all the more real? As though it’s a living breathing character as apposed to someone standing in the right places as delivery a well executed of phoney accent? If the traces of her accent affected the story, I would agree with you but it doesn’t. The style of the show in its original incarnation is a 1920s Vaudeville telling the story of Roxie and Velma-the style of this revival is that vaudeville is set in the timeless present but telling the a story set in the 20s - that’s why the costumes and hair aren’t strictly period and they allow anachronistic riffing at times. There is a meta layer to the show therefore it doesn’t matter if Velma had traces of the personality and accent of the actress actually playing her as that is absolutely stylistically correct for variety and vaudeville - the performers are ‘personalities’
I like this. I think her singing is amazing, especially for all the dancing around. I just feel like Velma is dark and mysterious voluptuous and not blond and skinny. She seems like a Roxy. She performed it well tho. It was very technically correct.
The incomparible Ute Lemper! Her live spooky and brilliant performance is totally in keeping with Fosse’s spikey choreography. Somehow it doesn’t come across so well in film, but for those who have seen her live in this it’s unforgettable.
The Velma here is Ute Lemper. She was well known before opening in the London production of "Chicago." Her blonde hair is a trademark which is why they didn't go for brunette. I'm
She doesn't say "jizz." She says "ja-izz," which is actually how most Americans would pronounce the word, but because it's a song the vowel gets prolonged, and also she's not a native English-speaker, so the secondary "ih" sound is much more noticeable than it normally would be. Native English speakers tend to pronounce even short vowels as very quick dipthongs much of the time, but you can barely hear it.

If she does sing the way she does - and true: for an american who hears that it sounds really strange - one can be sure, that there must be a reaosn why she sings that way. Interesting how a lot of people think her voice isn't suited to the song. I think it works great. Very sultry and "jazzy". To each their own I guess.
She's good for most of the song. It's only some of higher notrd. Also the way she says jezz instead of jazz. But it's not that bad honestly

People talking about her butchering the accent 1) I couldn’t even notice it at first and 2) it not only adds more character and personality to her but it also made it sound more sultry to me.
