Music for a Found Harmonium - Folk Music (Composer: Simon Jeffes) | Katy Adelson

- Here is an exciting tune called, "Music for a Found Harmonium." It was composed by Simon Jeffes (perhaps sometime in the 1980s), and originally performed by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. I believe the story goes that Mr. Jeffes found an abandoned harmonium in Japan while on tour, and invented this fun little tune on it! It's definitely a tune that's full of energy! I tried to recreate the vibe of finding an abandoned harmonium, but it actually was just a harmonium that I recently bought to add a different sound to my music. =) I really like the harmonium -- it adds somewhat of an accordion sound to music!
This tune appears at the end of the movie, "Napoleon Dynamite."
To me, this tune is quite repetitive to play -- it almost feels like I'm practicing an etude when I try to play it on the fiddle, lol. But it usually goes over well with audiences! There is a fiddle player in Colorado Springs that often plays it in a session, and the whole crowd goes wild. It's pretty neat!
I attempted to play it with an actual harmonium. I'm using a mini Indian harmonium, rather than a big British (or European?) harmonium. I'm brand new to playing the harmonium, although I can squeak out a few things on piano (I've made all of my backing tracks with an electric piano...) -- so the keyboard of the harmonium wasn't foreign to me. However, I set the tempo of this song way too fast for a newbie harmonium player!! :o I had to do so so so so many takes with the harmonium part... =/ I'm still not happy with how it turned out, but I think it's as good as it's going to get for now. We all have to start somewhere. =)
This was filmed during the disastrous fires that burned in Colorado, right before a snowstorm helped dampen the flames. The "fog" in the background of the video is actually smoke that mostly came from the Cameron Peak Fire (Colorado's largest wildfire in recorded history) -- it's supposed to be a clear blue sky the day this was filmed, but it looks cloudy and misty. That's all the smoke! I was wheezing... :o
I hope you are all staying safe during these crazy times! The USA's version of Thanksgiving is coming up soon, and my family and I are going to have a zoom call and eat pizza while staying safe and tucked away in our different houses/apartments. It's going to be a little weird -- definitely not a normal Thanksgiving -- but it's not worth the risk, in my opinion. I'm guessing we'll probably do the same thing with Christmas, but I don't want to get too far ahead of what may happen. I did some rough calculations based on airport travel expectations to estimate what might happen, and started to scare myself. Please stay safe!!
For the last few videos I've made, I also filmed vlog-like "behind the scenes" footage. I'm not sure if people might want to watch stuff like that. I tend to accumulate vlog-like footage, but then it just moves onto a portable hard drive, and is somewhat forgotten.... I have been getting a lot of comments from people saying they like the little behind-the-scenes clips that I've been adding at the end of my videos, so I might try to put a behind-the-scenes-vlog. =) I'm also working on making tutorials for every song in my music book! I'm hoping to release those all at once, and hopefully the music will be fun to learn while staying indoors this season.
I just realized there is a typo at the end... =( Oh well...I had a late night trying to finish this, lol... :/ I think it's close enough. =)
Thank you for watching -- please stay safe and healthy!!! This, too, shall pass! =)

She should never stop playing. I am traveling back and forth all the years I have missed this talent.
Katy Adelson walks through the woods and finds a nice playable harmonium. If it had been me, I’d have found a broken tromba marina :D
The video is SUPERB! As a videographer I know how much time and effort it takes to find the perfect location, get the lighting right, determine the camera angles for the story line, zoom in, zoom out, ensure the audio is accurate, ... ad infinitum. And, then you have to perform!! You did an outstanding job on both the performance and the video!!! THANK YOU!
The setting is so pretty and the music was great!
Thst tune is not gor the faint hearted ladies. And boy have you nailed it.
Brilliant playing.
Shay.
I can’t say “thank you” enough, Katy!
Autumn is in the air. .
As soon as you started playing I was like "I know that!" Never knew what it was called but it fit perfectly in the movie. Would love to see more behind the scenes stuff, too!
I thought I would listen to some of your old videos and this popped up first in my search: One of my favorite tunes. Your library of videos gets better and better (Greasy Coat, please).
Beautiful music and setting fits perfectly 👌 😍
Beautiful video! Beatiful melody! Very good Katy! Thanks!
This tune has really grown on me. It sounds like it belongs in a Wes Anderson film during a montage scene.
It was used in Napoleon Dynamite during the montage at the end.
Exciting music and beautiful scenery.
Great video!! Simon will be remembered forever, but you contributed to his status!!
exelente! one of my favourite movies is Malcolm, starring Colin Friels, and this was the theme song. i've listened to 5 versions today and i like yours the most :)
You are amazing! Beautiful music! I hope you have been healthy! 👏👏👏👏👏☺
Thank you!! I’ve been okay. =) I hope you are well, too!
Katy, that was a really fun piece; some of the chord progressions definitely threw me for a loop the first time you played it through. I'll need to look up the harmonium - it has the bellows on the back, and I'm assuming a small bladder inside? Overall great video! And yes, I enjoy seeing the behind-the-scenes clips; I think it shows how much work goes into setting up for one of these vlogs, and doesn't even cover all the post work you have to do. Wishing you a safe and joyous Thanksgiving, even with the oddities this year! "This, too, shall pass!" - funny, that's what the doc said right before my last colonoscopy ;-) Cheers!
Thank you!! Yeah, the chords are pretty bizarre and chaotic lol. I had the D drone going the whole time, too, which made it even more clash-y than if a guitar were accompanying. I was on the fence about keeping the drone for those weirder chords, but I think I kind of like the “siren-traffic-jam” vibe it all created that contrasted to d-major, so I left the drone in for the whole song. 🙂 it’s fun to experiment with music! I might cringe at it later lol. 😊 Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🍁
Thanks for another great video. It appears your skills are not just limited to music but also include videography and editing. Your videos have come along way since you put out Tam Lin.
More behind the scenes footage would be much appreciated...and maybe some pointers to.....
Dynamite Katy ! Thank and congratulations for your video, from France
That's quite a cool video to accompany the tune. Beautiful harmonium too
Brilliant - Love this💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
I tend to watch mostly guitar videos but you are seriously cool, and the editing on this video is very very impressive. ,👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
Big smile over here in Yorkshire, England.
I am currently practicing violin 🎻 to sound just like you Katy when I watch your videos because my goal is to bring happiness and joy with music to people. just like you transmite joy with your music 🎶 and I hope one day I can meet you in person, God bless you Katy
Great tune ! Great boots ! Great job !
Cute/ LOVE the setting !👏👏💕🎼🎼👍
It was enlightening to watch your creative process at the end - despite false starts and rethinks, the final product is seamless - there's got to be a lesson there!
Miss you Katy.
You just keep getting better and better. Your camera work is really good too.
Really nice, as usual !
Jesus, that was fantastic, sounds great. Nice work
Just…Wow!

Oh my god I dream few days ago how it will be with the violin 🎻❤️ I ha e a harmonium a d this video inspired me so so much thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely fabulous Katy...thank you.
Spilled me brew jiggin to this tune in the pub.
I have about 4 different accordions and enjoy playing this rousing ditty a lot. It's also fun when a bodhran player, some fiddlers and a flute join in. What a hoot.
I dig this, thanks for sharing! Stay safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
You are amazing, my daily dose of serotonin :D
Thank you, thank you, thank you Katy!
I just started making music this July, it takes a tremendous amount of work.
Thank you! Recording and making music does take a lot of effort, but it’s fun! 🙂🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵
Katy, this is brilliant...the cvdeo, the backstory clips and of course, your performance. Hope you have a safe and happy Thanksgiving
Super....+++++
The music is simple but it is pretty!
Enchanting, thank you for this joyful experience
I really love this.
Great stuff Katy!
Your violin case is so cute! Awesome job!!! Can't wait to hear more!
Stunning!!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely love Napoleon Dynamite
I’m 71: “Napoleon Dynamite” is in my top five all time favorite movies. Have two copies. And I REALLY like this song!
Glad to see you’ve kept your sense of humour in your advanced years, what are your other top films ?
Just awesome. I am inpressed))
Yeah ! J’adore !
Katy you and your twin did a simply awesome job on this tune. Your twin even played the Piano Accordion beautifully. You did real well to catch the flock of birds flying buy in the finishing sunset too. Stay safe & healthy yourself thus have a very happy thanks giving Katy.
Lovely
Wow, that was a lot of work! Sounds a bit like Hillbilly to me (I'm from Germany), but it's a very nice, aesthetic video! 🥰
It does sound kind of hillbilly, lol! 😊 Thank you!
Are there hillbillys in Germany? I'm from USA
@@legamature Of course we also have a rural population, e.g. Parts of the population in the state/Bundesland (similar to state in USA) Bavaria, but in Germany 233 people live in one square kilometer (1 kilometer = 1000 meters), in the USA it is 35 people per square kilometer, and the USA is a much bigger country than Germany. I want to say that there are people in Germany who are a bit simpler, but the differences to the entire population are not as great as perhaps in the USA.
In Germany you cannot drive 10 kilometers without seeing a house.
But if you mean the culture/music, it is actually a bit different in Bavaria than in the rest of Germany and maybe a bit comparable to Hillbilly in the USA.
@@voenigs612 Thanks for your answer. Do you speak English? Is it spoken widely in Germany?
@@voenigs612 I watched a video. English is spoken by 56% of Germans. I speak only English.
That was terrific. Thank you for posting.
Time to dust off the old Penguin Café Orchestra CD ... well played, thank you!
Much appreciated!
A morning coffee-time delight...thanks Katy
Katy that was a wonderful song. Awesome playing. I had not heard of a harmonium prior to this but you are right, it does sound like n accordion. Thank you.
I love this song so much and your version was wonderful 🙌
Thanks for sharing your talents and music with us.❤
Thank you, really liked that. :-)
How I wish I could stumble upon an abandoned harmonium like that! You lucky gal! (Is it from Old Delhi Music by any chance?) LOVED your video!
Brilliant job! I too find the tune repetitive but that is sort of it's charm. There is an infectious enthusiasm to the momentum of the tune that I think grabs people. Stay safe and keep playing!
Brilliant! Always loved that tune since I first heard it from the Penguin Cafe Orchestra.
Music is fabulous as always. The cinematography was superb too. It seemed to tell an old tale.
Merci Katy for all you offer to us. Take care. Emmanuel- Switzerland
I was just thinking of Penguin Cafe Orchestra and getting back into violin a few days ago and here you are! You are BRILLIANT!
well played :)
WOW you really put a lot of effort into you videos. Nice job BTW.
I love your music. 😍😍
Great, now i'm addicted to this song, have 6 versions in my playlist.
Had never heard of the harmonium, I'll defintely look more into it
Well Davy since you are an Organ player I think the harmonium is the right instrument for you!
@@ronaldmcdonald6257 I'll have one installed in The Flying Dutchman right now
@@benjaminprietop Ok
Fabuleux, toujours aussi pro, charmant et généreux ! Vive Katy, the best !
Beautiful rendition of one of my favourite pieces! Thank you.
I am not a musician. But that is a very interesting instrument Look forward to seeing & hearing it in future videos.
Is that what you call a socially distanced performance ? 😊
One of our favorite Contra Dance tunes. ,nicely done!
Wow, thanks Katy! This has inspired me to work on this tune again, never quite got it going properly. This is challenging piece to do on the mando at speed.
The drumbeat (a bodhrán?) while a bit slower, puts me in mind of "Apache" by the Shadows back in the 60's. (On a side note... I wonder how that would sound on the fiddle...)
Katy, it is good to see you again playing, happy and safe! ❤️
The music and you were so lively, in stark contrast to the otherworldly burning sky.
Thank you for the lovely performance. It seems you can play any instrument as lovely as the violin 😊.
I definitely would like to see more "behind the scene" footage.
Stay safe and happy (Thanksgiving)!
It's a sin i can't find your version on spotify. This is just brilliant!
I like the way you keep us filled with suspense!
You always seem to be full of surprises, so I can’t wait to see what you will come up with next!!! The Harmonium and the Violin seem to harmonize very well in melody.
I had to keep running this video back to read the script because they went by so fast.
Keep up the good work Katy!
This piece is so uplifting - your very talented and this was awesomeness 💫💫💫 !!!
Thankyou !!!
Beautiful film, and excellent playing! Whew!!!
WOW!
Another beautiful piece and the setting just let everything even better
Thank you.❤. God bless.
Well, this is the first time I've seen or heard a harmonium, and I gotta say I want one now 😂 It sounds lovely! Great music, and great camera-work. Kudos for the performance and the composer!
Love it!Josef from germany
Two genres of youtube videos in one: "music video" and "lost place discovery".
👏 👍Wow! As a prolific musician, if you can play the harmonium, you can certainly learn to play the concertina...if you don't already. 👌 😉
And about time, you are missed! I was starting to fear that you had succumbed to eating too much of your last production! Must of taken a lot of work, well done. Take care.
Você está fazendo a diferença sempre acredite nisso que Deus te abençoe. Lembre-se disso, Ele tem te abençoado com esse dom. E através do esforço e dedicação seu trabalho tem ido a muitas nações
Simply love your videos! Always look forward to the next one. May I ask, what violin strings do you play? May God bless.
Awesome Katie. You always make my day. Love the sound of the harmonium too. Happy Thanksgiving
you get a few fiddlers on this piece and hoomans forget about what divides us and we dance
That was so lovely and fun! ❤️
