    So after driving the B4C camaro for several miles it died. In todays video we replace the alternator which was directly under the power steering pump that was leaking when I bought the car. I'm pretty sure this is what caused the failure. Police Camaro also had a lot of electronics which is really hard on the charging systems. It is a pretty simple process but I wanted to show a video on how I remove them and replace. While I did rob the alternator off the WS6 Trans Am I listed 2 part numbers above for the proper replacement options.

    Very common issue if your power steering pump or reservoir leaks. Make sure that you have your power steering system completely solved before swapping out the soon to be dead altenator. I thought my 70k mile 2002 WS6 only had a high pressure line leak that sprayed fluid on everything and I replaced the line and thought it was repaired and was gonna go ahead and change out from the factory 90-95amp alternator but I decided it would be better to clean everything up and keep checking for any other leaks and sure as sh!t the o-ring between the reservoir and pump was leaking fluid down the back of the pump and directly into the alternator. So I've had a small leak at the reservoir for atleast 2 months (first signs of a very tiny leak and lights dimming at night when I'd slow down and apply the brakes). So the reservoir was likely leaking a tiny bit for awhile and it was starting to affect the alternator. I had that little issue for a bit before I got the hole In the pressure line for the power steering which blew the fluid out in no time ones it let go. 99% of the time your pressure line is going to start leaking where the metal is crimped onto the rubber part of the hose, so check around there first and also make sure all that damned conduit isn't blocking a leak that would otherwise be clearly visible. So now I've got a 145 amp alternator for an 04 escalade 6.0L (it doesn't use or have the spot for the rear 3rd bolt but it doesn't need it, just make sure it's a 4prong plug and is the 145 and not the 105 that some came with if you are looking to upgrade). I'm gonna remove the old 95amp and re-clean everything and swap to the higher amp alternator. These are very common issues with these cars but a small price to pay considering what you get with the rest of the car. Still one of the fastest cars on the road with very few mods and still looks better than pretty much every car on the road. Even if it needs a bit of maintenance from being at the least, 20 years old.

    • @TWAMotorsports
      @TWAMotorsports  Год назад

      This one had a leak before which I am sure caused the bad alternator. I replaced all the power steering components on it before.

    Power steering fluid ruined one of my alternators too in a similar situation close to home. Luckily I made it back in time. When I do the alternator, I like to disconnect the connectors for the maf, coolant temp , fuel injectors ect to give the alternator connector some slack before lowering it. It makes accessing the alternator connector much easier. Then I manuver the alternator towards the right side of the sway bar and it comes out relatively easy towards the right side. But I also spliced in quick disconnects towards the top of the harness to eliminate that process with the connector all together.
    You might as well get a truck alternator for the trans am when you replace it.

    • @TWAMotorsports
      @TWAMotorsports  4 года назад +1

      I did disconnect several plugs to get some room. It probably would help to go all the way up the rail. I think if I don't get a truck alt I may buy a bigger amp stock one.

    I enjoy these videos you do even if its something I already know how to do. I actually had an alternator issue happen twice. 1st my ls3 98 firebird battery needle was jumping, swapped alternators with 2000 SS and issue followed so I got a new one for the SS since it's the daily and didnt want future issues. 2nd time was the night before going to the drag strip the power steering line was leaking all over the firebird alternator and killed it. Cleaned it all up and stole the Camaro alternator so I could run at the track and actually came back and did the KG3 alternator upgrade on the firebird. I highly recommend it. Voltage is always perfect and saw overall electrical improvement throughout the car

    MAIN thing not told here is that big bracket has a bushing in each of the two front bolt holes and you have to move those forward with channel lock pliers or you'll never get the Alternator clocked into place. You do that and you don't have to remove the big bracket. You can see one of them sticking out at the 12:18 mark on the bracket. I spent 15-20 mins. trying to get one clocked into position and when it wouldn't I layed under the bracket and saw the damn things sticking out the back of the bracket for the first time! When you tighten up the two bolts it drives the bushings back through the bracket and takes up the slack between the bracket and alternator.....kinda like the opposite of the bushings you push back into a brake caliper so the caliper will go back into place when you're changing brake pads.
