Ah, bullshit. I am an ex aquarium owner and Chiclids breeder. I've bred Cardinal Tetra. These little fish breed best in a naturally set environment, the same as where they came from. To breed them successfully you need at least 10 Cardinals with at least 5 of them being males and no other fishes like Danios, Cherry Barbs, Rasboras, etc., to stop eating eggs and fry. The tank can be a 3x18x18, or 4x18x18. The tank for breeding is converted into two compartment with a sliding down glass plate. The large compartment is for breeding and the other compartment (which is less than a foot wide) is to return the fish in after they laid their eggs, to avoid stressing them when they are transferred out of the tank with a net and to avoid disturbing the eggs with the net while trying to catch the nervous fish. With the glass plate slides down into position, prepare the whole tank similar to their wild environment but make sure the glass plate can be slides up or down without jamming with plants and such. Both size tanks need lots of plants, including moss, driftwood to stain the water a light brown and a thin layer of brown or beige colored substrates not even a quarter of an inch thick. This substrate is there to make the fish think there is a bottom, as glass base is not encouraging the fish to breed. All live plants are inserted into 2 inch wide by two high canisters (pots) filled with coarse substrate to hold plants down. Since the pots have holes, make sure the substrate doesn't escape through the holes. The tank setting has to be an exact or similar environment to that of where they came from, Rio Negro, Brazil to Colombia. Rio Negro means black river because of the rotten timber, leaves and roots of trees staining the water a light brown, but it's not really black. Bright aquarium lights discourage breeding. It's recommended to use half the brightness if possible. If not, plants that creates shade are recommended. I used a timed dimmer that I made back in '84. It started as a dim light in the morning to fully on an hour later and at 6pm it gradually dimmed to off after one hour. It did not startle the fish. Nowadays you can buy units that do it electronically. Feeding was controlled. Favorite food was TetraMin flakes, blood worms, small garden flying insects e.g. mosquitos, ant larvae, finely chopped beef and chicken meat - breast, leg, etc., quail meat, and tiny pieces (1/8 of an inch) of freshly boiled egg yolk. That's how you breed these fish without problems. Once the eggs are seen, you have 2 choices, remove the parents if if you don't have a divided tank, or move then in the smaller compartment of the tank so that the proud parents can watch the result of their labor. A divided can be made in any way, using non toxic material. White plastic C channels are a good material for sliding a glass plate. Adhere two strips of glass 2-3 inches wide as high as the water level to form a 'fence', then adhere two strips of C channels at each end of these glass strips. Have a glass plate cut to size in height and 1/8 of an inch shorter to fit into the C channels so that it can be raised and lowered without sticking. Aeration and filtration of both compartments is critical. Water softness seem to play an important factor in breeding as it makes the fish think it's raining. To do that same effect, prepare two non toxic clear plastic tubes and drill a line of small holes lesz than an eight of an inch. Clea the tubes of burr and wash them. Place them on top the tank 2 or 3 inches above the surface and join the three ends with a plastic soft tubing, one end goes to a water outlet from the pump, the other end goes to the first tube, while the other end of the first tube is joined to the second tube w/o the the soft tubing, and finally the end of the second tubing is plugged to stop the water from escaping. Use something to reduce the light brightness that represents clouds overhead. Turn a valve that directs the water to these tubes with a controlled flow to simulate rainfall with each tube hole dropping a drop of water at 1/2 to 1 second interval, while the rest of pumped water continues undisrupted. These raindrops are to be used at least weekly, just like their natural environment. However, water softness and temperature need to be constantly monitored for the breeding of these fishes. In the wild, heat downpour bringscwater from the hills, it cools the water, changes the hardness and make it murky. So, when the water is aged and ready, place the fish in the large compartment and 'nurse' them until they show signs of mating and egg lying. If you see them laying eggs in time, monitor them until egg laying is complete, then gently lift the dividing glass plate and with a stick of wood spatula try to 'herd' the parents towards the small compartment and lower the glass plate so that they can relax. Now wait till the eggs hatch. This tank now will be home to these young fish for some time until they can be relocated, or sold. Cheers.

Some lovely colour in those tanks - awesome stuff and java moss is a great receptacle for small fish eggs. Many of the breeders around here use a base of marbles to prevent the eggs being eaten but I reckon that java moss is much better since the tank can be maintained in a natural condition after the spawning with no need for moving the fry. Great stuff.

I just realized today that two of my tetras are about to lay eggs, and I couldn't find anything on what to do with the fry. This was a great video! I'll definitely have to watch part 2 so I know how to take care of the eggs and fry
Thanks for the video, Mark! I realize it’s now over 4 years old, so would you have any updates to the process? I do have a few tips for those watching for the first time: 1) if your community tank is already low pH (7 or lower), the only conditioning you need is feeding with frozen and live foods. 2) ideally you shouldn’t use peat because its collection is unsustainable and damages environment - peat takes thousands of years to fully develop. 3) instead of peat, use RO or distilled water - add coconut husk and optionally blackwater botanicals. This will keep pH and hardness low and stable.

Couple of questions: 1- How do you prepare the peat? I've checked aquarium water with peat and found out that peat gives out some Ammonia. 2- How long does it take for the fish to get comfortable in the little tanks? In my case they are nervous for the first week or so before feeling at home and starting to breed. Thank you so much for the informative videos

Mark, thank you for putting up this quality series of videos. I had some inadvertent success with Congo tetras a few years ago, but now I'm inspired to try neons as well.
Just to keep you updated Mark. I had a peek with my magnifying glass. There is definitlry some life of some sort. I boiled the compost before and adder some fresh plants from my tank. I saw a couple of worms but just under the water surface i see like white things moving. I cannot say they look like fish yet. I hope it is them.
Great video thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, you now have me into egg laying fish now lol 😂 only had live bearing ones now I have neons white mountain minnows ordered some zebra danios, empra tetras. 👍🏻👍🏻⭐️⭐️ and you definitely are the star
I just bought some green neon tetras Paracheirodon simulans. Hoping to have as much success as you did in a few months. I bred white clouds this summer. I got more fry with just using one pair per tank. I am assuming it to be the same with neons. Thanks for sharing your breeding expertise.
Wow I’ve literally just watched them breed in my tank, the only problem is there’s 3 other neons in the tank eating the eggs , I’ll remove them now hopefully I’ll get a few fry
I set up a 29 the same way last week, going to put the neons in today.. Seems like the lighting part is in particular important. The only thing I did different so far is I put All RO water and added a small sponge filter on very low.
@@MARKSAQUATICS So the problem I seem to be having is two things, I really am only guessing if I have a male and female, could be I have two of one or the other, using cardinal tetras. The other thing is I have not seen them do anything like spawning as of yet. My setup is Identical. I think this might take a couple tries.
Any chance you could go to a US website like lowes or home depot and let me know what kind of peat you are talking about? Is it sphagnum peat moss? Because I have some and soaked it in water and it still wasnt as dark as you are using but I am not sure if it's just the video showing the difference in color.
HI Mark, Thank you so much for taking the time and making these videos for all of us. You always have so much information. The neon Tetra is a favorite here in our home. I am up to 5 tanks now. I enjoyed this video and learned quite a bit. I was wondering if you could go over the parameters for keeping the Neons happy and healthy shall we say. I have a that is around 150PPM with 8.5 GH, 4.5 KH with a PH of what looks to be 7.4-7.6 which I think may be too high. I have lost 5 of 35 thus far. negligable nitrate cant read it planted tank cycled up for 5 weeks 4 weeks then fish introduction. I enjoy your takes on things, thanks so much....
Wonderful, If you keep this up Mark, I'm going to have buckets of fish everywhere,, lol. The java moss is just a little hard to come by for me, But i hear if you can ever get it growing it will end up everywhere..
Top Vids Mark, please keep them coming. Can you please tell the make and size of breeder tanks, if possible where to get them. I'm planning a few breeder tanks in the garage, just dont tell the Mrs.
You are the man ,who done great job , is that any possible to reduce the video length ,few times i watched your other breeding videos ,its too long actually , can i know instead of peat moss anyother moss ? i bought peat moss from amazon they send it but thats more like fertilizer i couldn't wash it ,its keep coming as dark black , is that you meant to say spagnum moss or any possible to send me amazon product link , would be helpful cheers.
I haven’t had any luck with them laying. I have them with peat moss and java moss. How long is the process going to take? It’s been almost 4 days now and haven’t seen anything on the moss nor any fry.
Hi Mark like you I used to keep marines and have gone back to my roots. I have a problem with my goldfish tank plants won't grow in it lighting is with about 150 watts of led I have tried with ei nutes but no success as of yet. I have a small tropical tank upstairs and I can't stop pulling out massive plant growth. I know goodies are destructive but not that bad surely. Any light you can shed on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Ps just watched your video on breeding tetras I think like my goldfish I will breed them as well. Regards Martin Steele
Hi mark I have added peat moss in the tank , but it’s very dark , rarely I can see the fish , what should I do to get the water but more clear ? Pls reply .
Hi I've managed to get 2 batches of eggs but each time they have turned white within 24h I'm using Indian almond leafs blacking them out ro water with active soil to reduce ph its below 6 am I missing something to stop them going white ?
Do you have any tips on breeding the ember tetra (hyphessobrycon amandae)? Some of my females clearly have a lot of eggs but i cant get them to spawn. Should i try this neon tetra methode?
Hello Mark, I pray you are well. I know this is an older video but I hope this question reaches you. I am in the process of setting up to breed neon tetras (I never bred egg layers before). My question is about the PH. I understand that they need dark, soft, low PH water to make breeding happen. My concern is that my PH is 8 + and is extremely hard, I am worried that the fast change in PH and hardness will harm my adult fish. Do I need to worry, and at what age can I start to increase the babies PH? You're videos are the best!! I was going to start breeding these guys a little over a year ago, but life got in my way. I have been hooked on fish keeping since I was a small child and I am so excited to get started with breeding. Thank you for all you do, I don't think I would have the courage to even start this without your videos. God bless
Hi. You can do it this way. Put the water from your main aquarium in to your breeding tank but only fill halfway add the fish. Then slowly add rain water over a couple of hours. This will drop the PH and if your fish are conditioned well they should spawn ok. Add moss and Indian almond leaves to.
Hi Mark I have a question do you mix tank water and ro water to breed them? Or can I just use ro water alone? Or mix half tank water and half ro water would that be fine?
Hello Mark I’m very fond of looking at your videos, gives me much pleasure .I wonderif you ever bred on pygmy hatchedfish.I know it’s not very, but for a guy like you should be a piece of cake. Kind Regards Jørn (Denmark)
pH fluctuates in nature all the time. Many nano fish live in shallow flood pools where after rain pH can drop drastically over short period of time. Of course simply moving fish from a tank with pH 7 to tank with pH 6 will shock them, so do it gradually over 12-24 hour period. Best to do it during your next water change. Use water removed from the community tank and put it in spawning/conditioning tank. Move neons and then gradually change water in their conditioning tank with RO (or distilled water), add coco husk and botanicals, until pH and hardness drop sufficiently.
Since I have to stay home I thought I would learn something cool!
Thanks for the video series.

Couple of questions:
1- How do you prepare the peat? I've checked aquarium water with peat and found out that peat gives out some Ammonia.
2- How long does it take for the fish to get comfortable in the little tanks? In my case they are nervous for the first week or so before feeling at home and starting to breed.
Thank you so much for the informative videos
In soft acidic water, ammonia is no longer toxic to fish. And considering that is the goal of these tanks I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I saw a couple of worms but just under the water surface i see like white things moving. I cannot say they look like fish yet. I hope it is them.
Another very interesting video... Thanx Mark!
Thanks for watching 👍😀
What it's nice but don't talk to. Much its boring just go to the point..
Thanks for watching. 👍😀
I...have a 10gallon that I bred dwarf emerald rasboras... by basically letting the plants take over haha fry are really healthy
Thank you so much for the videos. My very attempt gave around 20 fries ready to be transferred to community tank
Fantastic! 😀👍
I just bought some green neon tetras Paracheirodon simulans. Hoping to have as much success as you did in a few months. I bred white clouds this summer. I got more fry with just using one pair per tank. I am assuming it to be the same with neons. Thanks for sharing your breeding expertise.
Amazing - ! Didn't know they could be bred in captivity - !
Awsome video sir. Thanks for the information. Happy fishkeeping
Thanks for watching 😀👍
Very nice. Thumbs up. Love the breeding videos. Please keep them coming. Breeding is the part of the hobby I enjoy the most. Can't wait for more.
Try breeding ottos that would be an interesting video
Ottos breed themselves.
Going to try this tomorrow, I’ve been Conditioning for about a week and just set up literally the same tank as you. Wish me luck!
Good luck.😀👍
Wow I’ve literally just watched them breed in my tank, the only problem is there’s 3 other neons in the tank eating the eggs , I’ll remove them now hopefully I’ll get a few fry
Could I ask how long does it take for the fry to non light sensitive
Been loving your channel my friend!
I set up a 29 the same way last week, going to put the neons in today.. Seems like the lighting part is in particular important. The only thing I did different so far is I put All RO water and added a small sponge filter on very low.
Keep lighting low, and once they have spawned turn off the lights until they hatch ok.
Not sure if I am ready to breed the neons yet. But I know if and when i do, I know where to get the expert advice from. Thanks Again. Blessings to you
Thanks for watching 👍😀
what do you use as a substrate? peat? Should the breeding tank mature? Do you make water changes? values?
magnificent video. congratulations
Mark,
You are a dream come true. You are always upbeat and you can tell that you are passionate about your fish and your talents make awesome videos!!! Please keep making them cause I learn so much.
Your USA Friend, Linda
Thanks Linda. 😀👍
Whats a peat?? Can i use soils found in plant nursery??
When i put in a peat soil base In thee tank and let it clear, the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates went off the charts. How did you manage this problem?
One of the best tetra breeding videos for sure !! Thanks
I have Harley Quinn, neon tetra, rummynose, white cloud minnows what goes well with them fish ??
Nice vid thanks for the upload Mark
I use the pets at home aquariums. They're good cheap aquariums for breeding.
I just spent 29 minutes watching fish porn. Not sure how to feel about it.
lol
@Cwallum Games my dick is blue and red like a neon tetra
Watch were you watching that on, RUclips
You are the man ,who done great job , is that any possible to reduce the video length ,few times i watched your other breeding videos ,its too long actually , can i know instead of peat moss anyother moss ? i bought peat moss from amazon they send it but thats more like fertilizer i couldn't wash it ,its keep coming as dark black , is that you meant to say spagnum moss or any possible to send me amazon product link , would be helpful cheers.
great video
Hey mark i am gonna try this one but in florida i cant find a proper peat can i use sand
No you need the peat of leafmould compost to lower the ph of the water. You could try Indian almond leaves or dry oak leaves.
Can I use the solution to adjust the pH. does it have any effect ?. And how much TDS is good?. Thank you !
I brought two betta fish male and female how often do I have to change their water how many months do I have to wait before I can breed them
I haven’t had any luck with them laying.
Pls reply .
Amazing
did you acclimate them before adding them to the aquarium?
Hi I've managed to get 2 batches of eggs but each time they have turned white within 24h I'm using Indian almond leafs blacking them out ro water with active soil to reduce ph its below 6 am I missing something to stop them going white ?
Do you have any tips on breeding the ember tetra (hyphessobrycon amandae)? Some of my females clearly have a lot of eggs but i cant get them to spawn. Should i try this neon tetra methode?
Ive searching for long time tq mark
hello mr mark today i make infusoriya culture same like you but i use cauli flower, what do you will it work or not..?
Will a cocos fibre block also suffice for breeding instead of peat?
did you climatize the tetras before putting them in those fish thanks??
Hi Mark I have a question do you mix tank water and ro water to breed them? Or can I just use ro water alone? Or mix half tank water and half ro water would that be fine?
many of us would love you to make a video of the heckel record breeding, which is very difficult to raise them
Hi. Thanks for video. Are u turn on aquarium light when fry start free swimming or room light (low light) is better for them?
Good job
Hello Mark
I’m very fond of looking at your videos, gives me much pleasure .I wonderif you ever bred on pygmy hatchedfish.I know it’s not very, but for a guy like you should be a piece of cake.
Kind Regards
Jørn (Denmark)
fantastic video! I really enjoy how you explain everything :) subbed
Nice video really helps
Love your video! How do the neons adjust dropping from a community tank of ph of say 7 and then putting them in a tank with a ph below 6?
pH fluctuates in nature all the time.
