To those wondering, the parking lot that the cannon is fired from is just north of Bird Point on the Seward Highway (at lat/long: 60.93191861444148, -149.36040009324583 on the map). There's nothing on the other side of the mountain except another mountain.
True story in the 1980s, a house just down the street from where I lived in North Ogden, Utah was hit by an errant shell that missed the mountain. It caused a small fire but the house survived.

@@amak1131 Artillery isn't that easy to aim, especially WWII Artillery batteries. Today you have modern GPS that can aim the battery for you, but with that you have to do it manually. Even for properly traind crews it still wasn't easy and you more then likely were going to miss the first 3-4 shots

I've been on that highway in Alaska a few times in the summer. Its right outside of Anchorage, Alaska and during the summertime its honestly one of the most beautiful and scenic roads I've ever driven on and I'm a professional drummer whos toured the world and have been to 92 countries.

San Juan and Ouray county in Colorado have been doing this for probably 75 years. I watched them shoot the Brooklyn chutes in '73. Alta ski area in Utah was doing this from fixed positions in 1963...

I remember when I was living in British Columbia up in Revelstoke it seemed like between Revelstoke and the next town Sicamous they had to do this periodically because it was a bad area for avalanches and it would hold up the traffic for maybe half an hour to an hour it all depended on the situation sometimes even 3 hours
