Thin Lizzy have SO MANY great songs, great Irish hard rock band from the 70's/early 80's! Jailbreak, Bad Reputation, Whiskey in a Jar, Renegade, Chinatown, Emerald etc etc. They are worth a deep dive ladies, Phil had such an amazing voice and his storytelling lyrics were great as well. Many theories about this song - most popular is that it is about a group of Gangsters from Manchester (UK) called "The quality street Gang". the lead singers (Phil Lynott) mam, ran a pub in Manchester frequented by the QSG and this song originated after they had been released from a stretch inside prison.

  • @erikthompson619
    @erikthompson619 4 месяца назад +6

Yes, lead singer Phil Lynott's (pronounced lie-not) "guitar" indeed has a longer neck - because it is in fact a bass 🙂 Phil was, for the longest time, literally the only black person in the whole of his, and Thin Lizzy's, native Ireland. the result of his unwed mother's casual fling with a sailor on shore leave. Phil grew up to become extremely popular with the girls, with his exotic looks, and it was for this reason he was hired a a singer at a very young age for Ireland's arguably first major hard rock band, Skid Row (no, not THEM!). But, when Phil's voice broke in puberty, he was fired - but Skid Row's bassist Brush Shiels, as a parting gift, taught him to play bass so that he would have it easier to find another band. Phil took to the bass immediately, and when he co-founded Thin Lizzy in 1969, his demand for joining was that he would also be the bass player, not "just" the singer. Sadly, in his own mind, he was a mediocre bassist at best - but according to the people who got to play with him, he was one of the most solid and groove-producing bass players EVER.
Thin Lizzy was to become, to European and Australian crowds, one of THE quintessential hard rock bands of the 70s - right up there with the likes of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. And Phil was the definitive rock star: tall, charismatic, extremely successful with the ladies (gossip has it that he is one of the, erm, most competent lovemakers in rock history) - but first and foremost, one of the finest songwriters and rock poets of all time.
In the US, however, Thin Lizzy have mostly been regarded as a one-hit wonder. This song is that hit. There are two quintessential versions of it: the original studio version from 1976, and the 1978 live version from one of the most legendary live albums ever, "Live and dangerous". This version here - not so much (I'll get to that). The reason Thin Lizzy never became a household name in the US, was probably because two major tours crashed and burned prematurely, killing their momentum. One in 1976, right on the heels of "The boys are back in town" becoming a hit - when Phil got sick in hepatitits. And one in 1979, when their then guitarist, the late great Gary Moore, abruptly left mid-tour, furious with Phil's and second guitarist Scott Gorham performing so poorly because of heroin abuse.
Which brings us back to this version of "TBABIT". The two classic versions are performed by the classic Thin Lizzy lineup: Phil Lynott, drummer Brian Downey (the band's only other constant from the start until the band splitting up in 1983), American guitarist Scott Gorham and Scottish guitarist Brian Robertson. This version here, is performed by the least popular Thin Lizzy lineup ever, active 1980-81. Here, Robertson - and more recently Moore - had been replaced by Snowy White (the blonde guyy) a more blues-influenced guitarist who never got any love from the fans. And also, once you notice you can't unsee it: the aforementioned heroin addiction has clearly taken its toll on Scott and Phil (the two making the fatal mistake of trying out the drug during an album recording in Paris in 1979). Scott would, thankfully, shake his addiction. Phil, sadly, succumbed to it on January 4th, 1986. He was only 35.
Phil's legacy, however, lives on forever. Not least here in Sweden, where Thin Lizzy are as cherished as Van Halen are in the US, and where every January 4th sees a tribute concert in Phil's honor take place in Stockholm where the country's finest hard rock musicians salute him by performing his songs. Of which there are innumerable mega classics, who you'd not be sorry for trying out. "Jailbreak", "Cowboy song", "Emerald", "Dancing in the moonlight", "Rosalie", "Whisky in the jar" (an Irish folk tune, in a very special version, later re-covered by Metallica), "Bad reputation", "Cold sweat", "Waiting for an alibi", "Killer on the loose", "Still in love with you" ... and no, I'm not exaggerating: all these ARE in fact just the tip of a gargantuan classics iceberg.

Thin Lizzy were a great band from Ireland.
Lead singer Phil Linnott wrote many great songs and had great stage presence. I think of their sound as being marked by the melodies and tones of their guitars. Easy to find great songs as mentioned in earlier comments below e.g. Emerald, Jailbreak, Rosalie etc.
I think my favourite song of theirs is "Running Back".
I saw them at Essex University in December 1975, when they were promoting "Jailbreak", which I consider their breakout album (no pun intended). Good rocking concert, the only thing was it was very loud, and I came out with ringing in my ears.

Summer of '76, a few weeks after high school graduation, a friend and I hitchhiked from Breckenridge, MN to Colorado Springs. We spent a week there, partying with some older friends that had moved there, then hitchhiked back to Breckenridge. Total trip took about 3 weeks, and on the last day we got to within about 10 miles from home and called some friends to come pick us up. As we entered the edge of town after our 3 weeks away, this song came on the radio. We turned and grinned and high-fived each other. "Yeah! We're back in town and it's Wednesday, barn dance night!"
Great memory, pops up every time I listen to this song.

Thin Lizzy peaked in N. America w/ the album 'Jailbreak' in 1976... The song 'Jailbreak' was a huge radio hit w/ 'The boys are back in town'... from that record... it sold gold in the US (half million copies)
Unfortunately, Thin Lizzy were not able to replicate that success in America after 'Jailbreak'... but stayed very popular in Europe w/ subsequent albums like 'Johnny the Fox'... 'Bad reputation' ...
Problems within Thin Lizzy resulted in Brian Robertson (guitar) being fired by the late 70's... Both Phil Lynott (vocals & bass) and Scott Gorham (guitar) were abusing drugs and insiders said that it was ruining the band creatively.
In 1983, Thin Lizzy released their final studio album 'Thunder and lightning'... and it was their best record in years w/ John Sykes (guitar) in the band. They played their 'farewell' shows on that tour and disbanded by 1984.
Members of Thin Lizzy were considering coming back for another album & tour... But it wasn't to be... Phil Lynott (the band's main songwriter, singer & frontman) was hospitalized and dying from organ failure after years of drug abuse... He passed away in early 1986.
Thin Lizzy's dual guitar sound was a huge influence on later bands like Iron Maiden... Megadeth ... Metallica ... etc. Phil Lynott is a legend in Ireland where he grew up and established Thin Lizzy in the late 60's/ early 70's w/ another Irish guitar legend Gary Moore.

      Quote:
"It was given 499th position among the 2004 Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, though was not included in the 2010 update. However, it re-entered the list in the 2021 update at an even higher position than before at number 272. Rolling Stone praised lead singer and bassist Phil Lynott's "Gaelic soul" and said the "twin-guitar lead by Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson" was "crucial to the song's success". In March 2005, Q magazine placed "The Boys Are Back in Town" at No. 38 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks. The song won a 1976 NME Award for Best Single". Cheers!!!

Wonder if that dual lead harmony was inspired by Duane and Dickey? Or Paul and George (And Your Bird Can Sing)?

A lot of people reckoned that phil never wrote a song unless it had meaning and they feel that this song was written during the era in Ireland when a lot of young Irish men went to work in England because of the recession in ireland during the 50's and 60's. Phil, because of his mixed race and nationality would, at the time, have had found it difficult to survive in England so he stayed at home. So, like the young women he too had to wait and hang out with the old men until summertime for the when the 'boys are back in town'. His poetic and musical genius disguised his despair behind an upbeat backing music.

Thin Lizzy | The Boys Are Back In Town! You bet I got that one. Kicks ,.. Have you seen the Van Halen "Jump" Video? The lead singer is into the martial arts and he can kick his own hat off. Way back in the 60's 70's my grandfather was a Dodger fan and just for fun My dad was an Angel fan. So I followed them for many years but I stopped long ago . The only thing I am into these days is is Football and the Rams were In Los Angeles when I was growing up. And BTW you have heard the Rams theme song circa 2001 when they were called "The Greatest show on Turf". .. Emerson Lake and Palmer Karn Evil 9 opening lyric to Part 2... "Welcome Back My Friends To the Show that Never Ends". This year the Rams have shored up their offense and look to be that again. Passing in the top five. Running in the top 5. I think they have compensated for the loss of Aaron Donald on Defense and will be in the Superbowl.
