the ‘magicians quest’ games. it got a bad rep because people called it an animal crossing rip off before actually deciding to play it. The fun animal designs mixed in more of the yokai designs of other creatures makes it cute and fun. Not to mention the idea of learning magic and having a special event at the end of every month. also some of the imagine games: more specifically ballet, ice skating, and makeup artists. they were Japanese Otome (games with love elements) bought by ubisoft (i think) and were repackaged for an American audience. The DS library is so full of little hidden gems, it feels like you could play nothing but it forever and never run out of novel experiences. There's a real home computer vibe to a lot of it. Great viddy!
It gets even better when you grab a flashcart imo - I still remember doodling on the original version of Colors and loved copying over my stupid scribbles from the SD card after
As the one person who has beaten defenders of the core, I feel obligated to say that it has genuine post game content. After you beat the game, you can go back and do a new game + type deal where it’s the same story, but I think you start with all the bakugan AND there’re hidden chests with mechanical bakugan in them and if you collect them all, you get the evil megazord bakugan that’s the final boss. Overall? More postgame content than Pokémon X & Y
I had the DS version. I don't remember all the details, but I recall you could get statues or something of the Bakugan? If memory serves, you could play as the 6 Battle Brawler guardian Bakugan + their evolutions, and the 6 base Vexos Bakugan + Helios MKII. You could also play as Maxus Drago and Maxus Helios. I doubt I'd be as into it now, but the concept was pretty cool.
Had it on the Wii. Beat it twice, once for the story and a second time to get all the vexos figurines and unlock max Helios. Then I went into the free mode where I tried (in vain) to get max time scores for all the levels using vexos bakugan, because I thought they were the coolest. Had a blast. To this day it's the most fun I remember having as a kid playing a game on console.
To be fair it was one of the first games to be released with the console. That aside, it really is an excellent game despite appearances. Teenage me was all "hot lady on the cover, ooga booga" of course but by the time you get to the end, the cuteness has taken over and you think about the goofy times you've had with your buddies and the ways relationships have enriched your life. Rub is love after all.
I recently saw Modern Vintage Gamer's video on the DS' hardware. If you have an appreciation for these obscure DS games, you should check it out. A lot of the design choices of these games are contextualised by the hardware limitations. For example, the reason so many sprites are used in games are because the DS has a small max poly count on their 3D rendering engine.
I loved playing that specific Bakugan game when I was a kid, I never even got past the second level but the training area was so cool I spent most of my time playing there
Honestly, I'm impressed that Bakugan: Battle Brawlers and Defenders of the Core were able to be replicated so closely on the DS. Usually it's just a different game with the same name, story, background, etc., but they actually kept things mostly the same. I've only ever played the DS versions, so I don't know how good the console versions are, but they were fun for the time.
as someone who owns a large cartridge of ds games (totally legally downloaded and gifted to me at a young age by a tech-savvy parent) i have a HUGE selection of weird obscure games I haven't even gotten around to. A good selection of ones I've played that i recommend checking out are: Beat City (basically a bootleg of rhythm heaven with a weird little story-line and a similar level of absurdity) Custom Robo Arena (I'm working on trying to play through it. Weird little battle creature thing like beyblade kinda??) Disney Stitch Jam (lol. stitch rhythm game.) Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (I really love this game it's so silly and has fun mechanics) The entire drawn to life series. Peak customization. There is also a spongebob version. Enchanted Folk and the School of Wizardry / Magician's Quest (idk what the difference is since I've only played that second one, but it's basically animal crossing but as a wizard.) Feel the Magic (minigame collection like warioware???? but its weird???? i remember being really weirded out by it.) Ghost Trick (I still have yet to finish this one but it's a puzzle game of sorts? neat mechanics, hard to explain) Henry Hatsworth and Monster Tale (two games with a really neat use of the dual-screen situation. Hatsworth is like a puzzle game combined with some genre of platforming, monster tale is metroidvania combined with a crazy monster evolution tree thing) Ivy the Kiwi (platformer that'd also on the wii that I never finished playing, i am very bad at finishing games lol) Lalaloopsy (yes, there is a lalaloopsy game, and yes i am recommending it.) The Legendary Starfy (like... kirby but underwater kind of????) Maestro! Jump in Music (a rhythm platformer? another one with weird mechanics but it's fun.) ZhuZhu Princess (play with zhuzhu pets on your ds) Magical Starsign (some sort of magic rpg i dont remember it super well since i never finished it) Okamiden (i know this one isn't that small of a game but i really love the okami games) Pokemon Conquest (pokemon, but make it a strategy game where you conquest places) Rockin' Pretty (anime idol band rhythm game where you choose what instrument you play) Soul Bubbles (i dunno how to simplify the gameplay but you maneuver a bubble through dangerous obstacles??) Spore Creatures (spore, but make the graphics 2d and befriend the other critters. very cute. has a story to it.) Viva Pinata Pocket Paradise (make a garden, look at pinata animals, yada yada nature simulator.) Zubo (like... toy collector battle game but idk if they ever made toys and it's pretty weird.) I could go on and on with the hundreds of game options but these are just some i remember trying and finding interesting.
Ghost Trick has been recently re-released for new platforms as it was created by Shu Takumi aka the mastermind behind the Ace Attorney games, I highly recommend it because the game is so good
I remember the Bakugan Battle Brawlers DS game, tried getting into it a year or so ago, but it just departed too much from the original Bakugan DS game for me personally. Thanks for giving these little-known games an fair shake, I’m very interested in trying out the pet shop one.
OH MY GOD ANOTHER HUMAN REMEMBERS LOST MAGIC! I was starting to wonder if the copy I had as a kid was the only one ever printed. My best friend and I once stayed up until 4 in the morning with a handwritten list of all the rune combinations so that we could unlock every spell in the game. What a wild time. There was also randomly an evil mode where halfway through the story you could do a complete 180 and become the bad guy for no real good reason and beat up all your former friends. Published by Ubisoft, too!
That high school musical was the first DS game I ever saw, so ofc i thought all of the DS games where rhythm based. I even made a cardboard DS with a spiderman "game" on the top screen and a tapping minigame on the bottom screen lol
It's so wild how strong these videos are lol. The pacing is absolutely perfect. Everything is perfectly discussed, the clips are fun, and nothing lingers for too long. The narration is amazing as well. You make me want to play every single one of these games lmao even when I know I'd have a miserable time doing so. Incredible content! I would love to see more videos in this same style :)
It's too bad Feel the Magic was marketed that way because it got so much controversy over its sexual overtones when it's really a quirky, sweet love story. It was seen as a game for perverts. But when I played, it was a lovely, creative little experience.
I think there was a menu where you could dress the girl up. Options were on the touchscreen with her being displayed on the top screen. You were able to swap the screens for the seemlingly sole purpose of touching her, wich felt like an uncomfortably weird/creepy game design choice.
yeah, but I think she always got mad at you when you touched her. The information booklet says something along the lines of "just because she takes your fashion advice doesn't mean you get to touch her!" or words to that effect, which I thought was both hilarious and pretty cool. (Sorry but I'm like the world's number one feel the magic fan)
i hope you play Style Savvy in one of these vids. it's so unassuming, I won't spoil what the core gameplay is because it even took me by surprise. looks 100% shovelware bait too. btw Runo still best girl
Personally I like the first Bakugan game a lot more since it actually felt more like an extension between the anime and the IRL game, but I do appreciate Defenders of the Core for how ambitious it was. Travelling across the world, running through tricky stealth sections, and fighting it out with giant Kaiju-like Bakugan in action combat is pretty dang cool in retrospect
They also made a High School Musical 2 game. I had it as a kid and loved it, it was a lot like Making the Cut, but it had an overworld that you could walk around in.
So glad my pet shop is getting more love, it was one of my favorite games as a kid and even now!! I wish there was more of a fan base around it though. However I never completed the game and would restart it after a large amount of time passed. It’s still fun :D
Eyy! You finally talked about Petz Rescue Ocean Patrol! That one is certainly my favorite, along with project rub and the rub rabbits (which is like a prequel I believe). Thanks for bringing them up!
Oh I loved my pet shop when I was a kid! I never heard anyone else talk about it, so i'm really happy to see you and other people in the comments section give this game some love. I remember that the game got surprisingly tricky with the catching of animals. There was this pink rabbit you had to catch for one of the characters, and I remember having so much trouble catching it. I still have the game on the old r4 I used to play it on, so I might pick it back up again.
I played My Petshop so much as a kid after my grandma bought me a copy as a present and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately I lost my copy but I want back a few years ago to buy another one because of my nostalgia for the game. Thanks so much for mentioning it!
Oh man, My Pet Shop was my childhood, I'm so glad it's finally getting some recognition after all these years. I love these videos it's nice to see someone give these games a chance
I don't remember playing too much shovelware on the OG DS but I got a game on the 3DS E-shop called Magical whip, it was an arcade style game where you play as a witch &/or wizard in training and have to kill all the enemies on screen, I remember deleting it one day to save space on my system & unlike other software (I guess cause it was originally and DSI ware game) it was removed from the 3DS E-shop. Sad I never beat it.
Did you know that game's files still exist? If you wanted to play it again there are projects on the internet that are dedicated to preserving old e-shop content from many old consoles whose games would otherwise be lost to time. I went searching and found "Magical Whip" both EU and NA versions of the game within a few moments.
Bakugan Defenders of the Core on the Wii was such a huge part of my childhood, I never knew they managed to put the same game with the same gameplay onto the DS! What a wild discovery! 😂
An incredible obscure DS game everyone should play but no one does is Solatorobo: Red the Hunter, a lengthy (but never boring) full-size, extremely beautiful action RPG with an insane plot, endearing characters, consistently fun gameplay, and incredible worldbuilding about being an odd-job doing mech-driving hero on a France-inspired floating island setting getting entangled in magical conspiracies and secrets of the apocoliptic past. The physical version is way too pricy these days (unless you're up for spending a good couple hundred dollars), so I suggest... y'know. Either download it to your Windows DS or find some 20-buck rom dump cartridge on Amizon that has it. The dev team is still making games in the franchise today, but unfortunately they still lie in obscurity.
i really love the lil animations you put trough the vid lol, the editing is awesome also, i see a big improvement!!! your delivery and jokes are also really good as always, you funny af, loving your content so far
dude, petz rescue ocean patrol was my CHILDHOOD... i still have my old cartridge, but it hasn't worked for a long time. i'm glad other people actually know this game exists because it's awesome.
YO i was so shocked to see Bakugan Defenders of the core as the first game to be talked about! Definitely one of my favorite Bakugan games! It managed to capture the epicness of fighting as a Bakugan in the perfect way imo, I loved this game so much that I not only played the DS version but also the PS3 version xD
In fairness of the lack of female characters in DotC, it's directly mirroring the main cast of Season 2 of the show, in which all the girls had actual jobs, while Dan and Shun just messed about until Marucho did a little funky funky and opened a portal to the new threat. All three of the girls (heck, even Chan Lee as one of the two returning former Masquerade goons alongside Klaus) did reappear though and even got a few of their own fights, but the lack of Season 2 powerup caught them all lacking.
I remember playing the Wii version of Defenders of The Core as a kid. I tried to play the game again awhile back and I just couldn't get over how limited the character customization was so I never got further than playing Local Versus mode with the starting roster. It felt like no matter what I changed, I always just looked like a variation of Dan.
Ninja Town was my jam growing up. I remember I played it originally on a friend's system and my sister and I liked it so much, we had to go to the store and get a copy of our own. We never finished it because the later levels were really hard, but the game had an in depth upgrade system and quite a bit of unlockables. The creator, Shawnimals, is apparently still active today selling Ninja Town related merch among their original projects. I remember the game retailing for $20 brand new, it was truly a hidden gem if you are into tower defense games!
Did you animated the intro yourself? I've been interested in a tutorial on how to make lo-fi polygons like those on the DS, particularly with more realistic proportions. All the tutorials I have found are for PS1 and N64 style graphics.
As a kid obsessed with sealife I loved Rescue patrol so deeply so many memories. I remember it getting very frustrating for me especially with the driving sequences though
Honestly, the fact that there's just so much just sitting on the DS that is just absolutely well-made is nuts. I'm glad that we are finally seeing ports of some of these, like the Ace Attorney Series (Still missing Apollo...) and Ghost Trick (Which I honestly LOVED playing, and there's a funny twist that I want to keep secret as to not spoil the game. Find the DS copy online via dumps or get the Steam version, it's a great, albeit short game) Now that I realize it, Capcom seems to be the only studio porting their DS games to modern platforms... I gotta see if I can get the Lego Battles devs to push for a PC port, ofc preserving that nostalgaic pixel art style.
I would like to formally request a video where you exclusively discuss what you think about "Feel The Magic XY/XX" and "The Rub Rabbits!" thematically, please! I don't know if you can tell but they're sort of my favorite games of all time, and there are surprisingly few videos about them on RUclips.
Alright, so I have 100%ed both Defenders of the Core and Lego Ninjago but for very different reasons. Defenders of the core is like 2 hours long and once you get over the spectacle of unlocking Maxus Draganoid, you can basically move on. Lego Ninjago doesn't ever get any deeper than "teehee big unit" but it was still a really fun experience at the time, ps you do get to use monster units or more specifically you can play as the skeleton faction and mix and match in the bonus challenges.
About a year ago, I saw a bakugan ds game at a local thrift store and just felt like i had to pick it up! Its full title is Bakugan: Rise of the Resistance. It’s a tower defense game where when you’re not battling you explore a little world map. I think i finished it with a play time of like 7 hours but i surprisingly had a lot of fun! And heads up if someone does decide to play it, I don’t think there are hints for the player for if you don’t know where to got next for story if you accidentally skip a text box so at one point i literally just had to re-explore everything to see where it was I had to go next :/
The funny thing is thats legit what the second season of bakugan did was remove the previous female companions till like the second half... and a 2/3 of them lose their only battle in that season
I wonder if it counts as shovelware, but I really love the Touch Detective series. I actually played the second one first since I couldn't find the first game at the game shop. Still had a blast and it has some really great music too
Ninja town, elebits, lost magic and feel the magic were such grt games for what they are. I still play my massive ds collection to this day. Prob wont ever fully get to all the games i own. But there are def ones that have went un praised sadly
The wii version of this Bakugan game was awesome and super fun kinda short tho. But you could play as Gus Grav so its instantly the best game ever made
I'm wondering if anyone knows who the character designer for the Petz game was? It looks liker Souillon from Maliki's work but I can't be sure... Would you check in the game credits if they're available from the start?
would be cool to see you do more Wii or PS2 games, that's where so many of these weird types of games used to live. Or just do more DS cause there's more than enough weird little games in there to last a lifetime. I mean I played hundreds of weird ds games and never heard of any of these so goddman.
What’s a game you feel is underrated?
Warioware DIY or Luigi’s mansion 2
the ‘magicians quest’ games. it got a bad rep because people called it an animal crossing rip off before actually deciding to play it.
The anime style is so loving and charming, their is deep plot, lots of mini games, and also boys to choose.
VA11-HALLA. It's one of my favourite video games of all time, and I'd highly reccomend it if you enjoy visual novels or cyberpunk vibes :3

Feel the Magic is so good. One of my first DS games. It's great because every minigame in that game is part of a connected story
I agree. It flew way too far under the radar and thats a shame.
True! Calling it "shovelware" feels hella rude, imo

i really love the lil animations you put trough the vid lol, the editing is awesome also, i see a big improvement!!! your delivery and jokes are also really good as always, you funny af, loving your content so far
dude, petz rescue ocean patrol was my CHILDHOOD... i still have my old cartridge, but it hasn't worked for a long time. i'm glad other people actually know this game exists because it's awesome.
I'm just a regular person, I see Mira (Bakugan), I click :)
Nice use of the model in the start of the video!
Overall, great video!

I LOVED NinjaTown as a kid. Also, your use of Bomber Man 64 music in the background warms my heart. Subscribed!
Just found your channel, love your aesthetic, and your script writing is superb ❤ subscribed, can't wait to see more
project rub (feel the magic) is good as hell, the ending is amazingly hype, you need to finish it. one of the best DS games, one of the classics.
There are two Bakugan games EXCLUSIVE to the DS: "Battle Trainer" and "Rise of the Resistance", I would love to see those being covered too.
Sick! I’ve been waiting for more from you.
I had this Bakugan game. I remember when my brother erased my save
The Tim Rogersisms in this style of video are wierdly fun

1:31 okay Low-Poly Mira dancing is way too cute ☺️
I did, but I got the models from the game itself lol. I’ve been meaning to get into the same style of modeling you’re talking about tho
@@stylerrobinhi can you tell me how you exported the models?
@@himzi1 Search The Models Resource, sort by DS/DSi, go to B's and have at it.
Kingdom hearts 358 days has decent proportions
As a kid obsessed with sealife I loved Rescue patrol so deeply so many memories.
I remember it getting very frustrating for me especially with the driving sequences though
another great video! this is making me want to dig out all my old shovelware games and replay them :D
OMG I ad project rub as a kid and it's been YEARS I'm looking fir the title of it! Thank you so much now Iv can rest in peace!!!
Find the DS copy online via dumps or get the Steam version, it's a great, albeit short game)
Now that I realize it, Capcom seems to be the only studio porting their DS games to modern platforms... I gotta see if I can get the Lego Battles devs to push for a PC port, ofc preserving that nostalgaic pixel art style.
these ninjas looks like amongus
Limited button layout of the DS? It just has two less triggers. Ooooooooooo
I would like to formally request a video where you exclusively discuss what you think about "Feel The Magic XY/XX" and "The Rub Rabbits!" thematically, please! I don't know if you can tell but they're sort of my favorite games of all time, and there are surprisingly few videos about them on RUclips.
I can't get over how the male protag of Feel the Magic looks like one of the bad guys from Katana Zero
Oh hey it's the slowpoke guy! Hello slowpoke guy!
hello it’s me slowpoke guy
@@stylerrobin Yoooooo thanks for saying hi!
Low poly Mira dancing is something I never thought I wanted 😍
Maybe controversial,
But I think the DS was a neat system
I’m excited to see your 2nd list :) I liked the first games you presented 😊
Feel the magic looks fun as hell
Feel the Magic has a sequel called The Rub Rabbits! It's definitely worth checking out.
hmm yeah, maybe I’ll cover that one in a future video
Banger video
FYI: Rub Rabbits [nds] is the sequel to Feel the Magic XY/XX.
i wish the ds had games that werent shovelware
these are all so great tho so i wish every console had more shovelware!!!
I played the heck outta Lego battles Ninjago.
It's the first Lego game I got 100 percent in when I was a kid.
And heads up if someone does decide to play it, I don’t think there are hints for the player for if you don’t know where to got next for story if you accidentally skip a text box so at one point i literally just had to re-explore everything to see where it was I had to go next :/
will definitely check this game out!
The funny thing is thats legit what the second season of bakugan did was remove the previous female companions till like the second half... and a 2/3 of them lose their only battle in that season
Confirmed, Feel the Magic can be destroyed with an impression of Whitey from Eight Crazy Nights.
I wonder if it counts as shovelware, but I really love the Touch Detective series. I actually played the second one first since I couldn't find the first game at the game shop. Still had a blast and it has some really great music too

they never made a game for mechtanium surge :(
Ive been looking for that dolphin game for 12 years.. 12 DUDE. and i find it in a random youtube video thank you so much
Ninja town, elebits, lost magic and feel the magic were such grt games for what they are. I still play my massive ds collection to this day. Prob wont ever fully get to all the games i own. But there are def ones that have went un praised sadly
Referring to Feel the Magic/Rub Rabbits as shovelware is certainly a take.
The wii version of this Bakugan game was awesome and super fun kinda short tho. But you could play as Gus Grav so its instantly the best game ever made
Defenders of Core? Looks awesome.
I love that Bakugan game, it was one of my favorites.
Another bakugan thumbnail you know how to get me to click 💀
my sister and I also had the High School musical one and even though i had never seen the movies i still liked it a lot
so i stopped watching bakugan after the original series. they took out all the girls?? rip runo and alice, my childhood favs
You did it! You came back with more cool content!
Have you played Rhythm Heaven?
reminded that I actually have a sealed copy of Ninja Town
IMG IVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND THAT DEFENDERS OF THE CORE TITLE THEME FOR AGESSSS
planet rescue ocean patrol my beloved
Just found your channel, thought you sounded like Salty lmao
I'm wondering if anyone knows who the character designer for the Petz game was? It looks liker Souillon from Maliki's work but I can't be sure... Would you check in the game credits if they're available from the start?
would be cool to see you do more Wii or PS2 games, that's where so many of these weird types of games used to live. Or just do more DS cause there's more than enough weird little games in there to last a lifetime. I mean I played hundreds of weird ds games and never heard of any of these so goddman.
Ayo a fellow Ryunosuke pfp!
my favorite niche kind of video, thank u
