With his "old" voice he can sing far better than most of the young singers of today, better than anything you'll ever see on American Idol, or anywhere for that matter.
lucky is the word for the americans, for having this beautiful tribute song to them telling us a bit of their daily life. sometimes we take thing for granted and only realise its after it slipped through our hands/eyes.
Once my father and I went to the lake by car and "american pie" started to play from the radio. It was a hot day, my father was already an old man. I knew it maybe was the last summer for us and the lake. I will never forget this moment.
Rest In Peace Buddy, Ritchie and Big Bopper - it's a shame they died, but their music will live forever. I wish I'd been alive to seem them for real. They may not be with us physically, but they will always be remembered.
i listen to song almost every day i am from pakistan and i grew up listening to this song and thats how i fell in love with America .and i am here in florida i am lucky.i am part of this beautifull land .THERE IS NO OTHER PLACE IN THE WORLD LIKE AMERICA.
I wish him the very best, he gave us his talent, his gift, many of us will take the memories he has created into our old age. I will never forget him. I grew up listening to him. He is what he is. One hundred percent true talent. Long live this incredibly talented man. Talent beyond words to express.
The first time I heard this song I couldn't get it out of my head for several days. It didn't help much that the radio station was playing it every other song! Great Music! Great time in my life! Boy time sure moves on Huh.
I love this song too!!! It makes you feel good and makes you love small town America more doesn't it? I used to watch this show with my dad in the morning before I'd go off to school. So Don Imus, thanks for making my dad laugh and me laugh. Get well soon sir!!!
Caralho! Essa música é uma ode ao século XX! Ela faz os EUA de poucas décadas atrás parecerem uma realidade distante e romântica... Damn! This song is an ode to the XXth century! It makes the USA from few decades ago look like a distant and romantic utopy...
Live music sends a different message across to the listener. although he might not be able to hit that high notes but he presents the song in a new way ,a fresh way of interpreating the song that still rocks the crowd. cheers and keep the music alive!
@william2603 Do you have to be from the USA to love and appreciate this classic song? Just because Don McLean is from the USA, his music is loved by the whole world, not just people from the USA. I agree with you that people shouldn't be disliking a song like this, but to say that these people must not be from the USA is wrong.
He's Changed the co-ordination of the lyrics, but if you asked me if goes well, so all you people that think his voice has died i dissagree, i like this version its amazing! keep up the good work don!
i say well done for his age. hes deffinitely held his own over the years. hes just having fun the way the lyrics are arranged. you have to remember this was played live, and hes not exactly 25 anymore (no offense to him, hes awesome). hes just there for a good time, you can see it on his face.amazingly written song, well displayed video. props
Such a great song. I've tried many times before, to update this song, and I came up with a few good lines, as a kind of tribute to Don McLean's brillance, but it's such a crazy whim, because it's next to impossible to live up to the excellence of such a perfect song.
Damn it when's he going to be playing in America? I want to see him so badly. My mom saw him perform this in an auditorium in Greenwich Village back in 1971. Sometimes I wish I was born forty years earlier..
The recordings you heard were when he was 25 years younger, studio recorded etc ... this is live without all the bells and whistles at, probably, 7am in the morning ... all things considered, I'd say pretty damm good ..
I agree with almost everyone, plus personally i think real music includes not only a good voice but great lyrics. This song has heart and meaning aswel, both of which are very rare these days to find in modern music. The only way to really hear this song is to hear it by the person who originally sung this and why remakes of this have failed. LOVE DON

This is, in my opinion, easily the greatest song of that era. It just fucking oozes nostalgia and heart. Such a beautiful tune.
My mom saw Don perform this song at Washington Square in 1971. She was 21 years old.
those are the days of my life in college hanging out with my friends they all at the university. shit what a big time dude.
