The #1 cause of failure is having your mini-turbo boost still active while touching the trick ramp (because it is off-road, and mini-turbo boosting in the off-road will delete all your speed). With a high mini-turbo (low speed) combo, you need to release you mini-turbo a bit earlier than expected for this shortcut to work. I've also tested on other tracks like Hyrule circuit nisc and mushroom gorge gap cut. it appears that neutral hop does not gain more air nor distance. it just sets up the best alignment in most cases. but there are times where you don't neutral hop. for mushroom gorge its better to left hop the gap cut if you're not hopping the fence. for Hyrule circuit you can slight left hop to dodge the plant on lap 3. Also on mushroom gorge for the nisc at the start of the lap, you do a right hop.

do you know where I can find video proof of neutral hop having more air? im open to believing it again, its just that I've never seen proof, and all signs point to choosing your hop direction based on alignment. also I tested 3 hop directions on the Hyrule circuit nisc and slowed it down, and the jump heights look identical. If you'd like I can upload it unlisted

Bc my favorite combo is dry bones scooty I tried doing the shroomless version the first way and tried making it while the whole time I actually needed to go farther to the left 😢
I've personally done about 40+ perfect attempts with the slowest combo and 10 coins, and the trick just never happens. I get a hop and that's it. Maybe it is possible, but I'm decent at the shortcut with a faster combo so I know I'm not just messing it up.

shortcat found anther tip : release your mini turbo EARLY and the shortcat is not that difficult (I can even do it 3/3 now) and yes, the shortcut is possible with every vehicle (except inward drift bikes)
For this shortcat tou will need three mushrooms, two bullet bills and a double super mini turbo every two seconds. But did you know you can do this shortcat with no mushroom?
You miss an item box, but it's about equal speed and you temporarily end up ahead by a bit. I've used this shroomless cut to temporarily get ahead and hit somebody with my trail item before they could pass me. Super niche, but yeah it's more fun than it is useful
Wait, how'd you even get the super mini turbo consistent? I tried it on a similar combo (Lemmy+Mr. Scooty+Roller+Cloud Glider), and I can't really get the super mini turbo up consistently without taking a super awkward line to increase the turn angle... And even then, often I fall short even with holding the stick back, let alone getting the trick, which seems essentially impossible. How'd you get it consistently at that angle? I'm really confused...

So far I usually try it as follows: Softdrift into the shortcut (I usually end up angled around 105 degrees off the road) As soon as I reach the blue line, release the stick and hop, then try hopping again once I hit the ramp. 95% of the time, I still end up short of the platform, despite getting the SMT...

I haven’t tried it yet but, the full nisc might be possible on slower builds depending on how many coins you have.
