Great you focused on the positive and talk to someone else who was being kind... Great video, because it's good to know a problem before you have to deal with the issue. Hope others can just walk away too.

I took a starter job. Done with that now. (Yes, I am old). It provided me free golf. We always had two members that thought they were in charge. I had to get the manager several times. I hate self-importance, pomposity. It is absolutely NEGATIVE energy. At the course, it SHOULD be a relaxing, fun place. I used to tell folks, any issues with patrons, call the clubhouse, I will get informed, I will deal with it, you focus on your round. Momma always said, smile, it is free, and people like it. The older I get, her words are more true.

Thank you for sharing that. As I have mentioned before, I am new to golf and been learning on my own for the last 3 yrs (seasons for me because 6mths out of the year I have snow). I agree with you, if everyone chips there that it should be Ok for you too. I played in my first Senior Tournament last year (only have to be 50 in our area and I'm 51 now) and one of the gentlemen that was in our group was rude to me and always tried to hurry me up, even though it was fine for him to take his time. Finally, a different gentleman in our group told this guy to knock it off and that this guy (me) was new to golf. I did apologize to this guy for "slow" playing but over all, my experience in my first Senior Tournament was good and I'm glad another gentleman said something.

well awesome for asking. I have to work on my wedge game. learn the 56 and 60 degree. like the flop shots and punching out of thick grass. When i practice on a flat surface and on matts, i know im stricking the ball well, its on the course that i have trouble with like the thick grass and the hills/slopes. Cover something like that would be great.@@mistahshorthitter

I was a teacher/coach at a small course in the Bay Area of Ca and I was at one hole practicing putting. Just the one hole, not the entire green. I was doing ladder drills and spoke drills just working on my getting the ball in the hole stroke. This guy comes up to me and says "Hey, you can't monopolize a hole on this putting green." The putting green was empty, there was no one on it but he and I. He had like 6 other holes to put to. I was in a corner of the green trying to stay out of the way. I ignored him and continued putting. He said he was going to get the manager. I told him I was the manager. lol. He didn't have much to say after that. Some people just like to be dicks. Golf is full of them, unfortunately. You did the right thing. 👏

I played around 100 rounds over the past year and I developed a lot of pet peeves along the way. However, chipping onto a putting green would not bother me enough to be on my top ten list of annoyances, so it certainly wouldn't merit lecturing someone over. Much higher on my list of grievances would be things like slow play, golfers cutting in front of me, local residents hanging out on the fairways, unraked bunkers, etc.

These are the types of people who make 'growing the game' difficult. There are so many who want to get into golf (like me and a billion other people in the last 2-3 years) but the 'stuffiness' of grumpy individuals like the one you encountered can be enough to deter newcomers from ever wanting to step foot on a golf course. On a personal level, I find it's usually best to ignore and move on -- they're not worth it. Most course just put up no chipping signs on the greens that you can't chip on. However, your solution is a good one. Thank you!

MSH, don't let fools upset you or your lifestyle. If there is no signage, it's irrelevant if you chip there or not. The indvidual that challenged you is the one with the problem. I think of these people as oxygen thieves!

I deal with people like that often,
    1. my response is to be over agreeable (your right the practice green would be a better spot)
    2. Find common ground and stroke their ego, ( I see your a good putter, have you played here often what's the hardest hole?)
    3. Get them to do or omit to have done what they are complaining about, ( lets see who can chip closer to that hole) or (I know just by looking at you ,you have chipped here before ) say it with praise and laughter
    4. Let them win, and or brag up their story ( man that's awesome) (I knew it)
    5. Get acquainted ( what's your name? we should play a round some time)
Go back to doing what you were doing and guaranteed this person will now defend you instead.
Treat them positively like they are ten and they will feel like a ten.
I've played Mexico ,Us and Canada , most courses don't want you to chip on the practice putting greens but many people do, so he wasn't wrong however life is better played in the grey area than by the book. this is more about how to deal with small minded people.

I had the same thing happen to me earlier this year on a public course's putting. I asked the worker at the course who said that chipping a couple yards off the green was ok but further than that was not approved. I was chipping about 20 yards away from the green, so I guess I was wrong.

  • @AZstu324

It's a golf course's responsibility to manage and regulate the traffic in the practice areas. If a green is solely intended to be a putting or chipping green, there needs to be signage. Leaving things open for interpretation and "unspoken rules" isn't a good practice for a public facility.
My point is that if the golf course really intended for it to be a putting green and nothing else, they would have put up a sign. You did nothing wrong and that guy was just being a "Darren". His lack of self confidence needed an extra boost that day and unfortunately you were his validation victim. I'm sure he spent all 18 holes blaming his bad shots on the grounds crew and mother nature.

I'm 74 now and it's an unfortunate fact of life that there are the rare a$$clowns out there that think they have the authority to tell everyone what to do and how to do it. I've been playing about 44 years now and I have only encountered 2. As a rule, anyone who plays golf is a gentleman or gentlewoman and the idea of the game is to play your best while being sociable with the others with whom you're playing. I've had some really enjoyable rounds playing with 3 other strangers on a local public course, and isn't that the idea? To enjoy one's self and the others with whom you're playing?
You, sir, are a true gentleman and a credit to the game. You handled a distasteful situation in a calm and gentlemanly manner and I would consider it an honor should I ever be paired with you for 18 holes. Best wishes and hit 'em well.

When he came up on the middle of 17 I said "If I wanted to spend 75 bucks just to get bitched at, I woulda just paid the Hulu bill and not taken the trash out." Dude was gobsmacked that there was any pushback at all, and just left us alone to finish our last 1.5 holes of golf. Who does that?

    Wont play another stroke there.

"This is how the fight got started". Man I have has a hand full of situations like that. I have been carrying pepper spray for just that reason. I remember an old guy that came up to a whole line of golfers on a med sized range. He threatened all of us because he went all the way down the range on the outside of the net and went through a hole in the netting to retrieve some balls. 200yds down the range he looked like he was outside the range and no-one gave it any thought. Who does that?!?!? He was straight up wrong for doing that. However, in his mind we should have all stopped what we were doing. He said nothing to anyone before going out there. @@mistahshorthitter That was my thought too. You need to get rid of golfers like that. You'll lose more business because of them than they'll ever generate for you.
I had an experience with one just a few weeks ago though it was kind of indirect. I was playing in a four ball and we had a golf society in front of us which were all four balls and a ladies society (Lord help us) in front of them. After the game I was sitting outside the clubhouse and two guys came by from the course; one of them was crying like a whipped pup because we hadn't let him play through. Because they were a two ball he thought it was a given they should go through. The fact is, if they did go through, where were they going when there was that mob in front of them? Also, we hadn't lost a hole; in fact we never lost half a hole as we were often waiting too. To make the guy seem even more ridiculous there was a two ball behind him. Why did they join up and make a four ball and go with the flow? Funniest thing of all was, even with the society and ladies in front of us, it ended up being just a four hour round.
Since then I've learned he's been playing there since the Old King died and is out every Friday morning so, naturally, he owns the course on a Friday! 🙄 I wanted to pull him up as he went by whining but in the end I just let it go. However, next time he's behind me you can be damned sure I'll be lining up my putts from all four points of the compass! 😁

Having said that, not only had they lost a ball, they had also lost a complete hole or more, so credit where credit is due, he did step aside when etiquette required it. I have a forgiving heart so I made sure we scooted along and didn't hold him up at all. ☺
