I was an Air Trafficker there for a couple of years in the 90s - very strange to see the tower again!

I flew out from there once with work, only about 10yrs ago... From the car park it was a 30second stroll to the main gate and 'security' looked basically like a kitchen table and three people in uniforms!! It was like going back to what flying must have been like in the 60s! The last big plane I saw land there, quite by chance as I drove by, was the Rolling Stones' Jumbo Jet with the big lips painted on it (It was when Mick Jagger's girlfriend committed suicide and he cut short a concert tour). The airport was busy for a few weeks in 2013 when British Airways(?) did their 'conversion training' for the huge A380 Airbus. It was great having these enormous passenger jets doing low level circuits right over my house (I live about 5 miles away). What might be interesting for IKS is that there's a chap (aged 58) who works with me who is adamant that he worked with a chap (who was an older chap when my colleague was younger) who said he'd helped fit out tunnels that went from under Manston Airport and connected with the Ramsgate tunnels!! I don't think there's any truth in it as I've looked into it and never found any hint of the story elsewhere... but my colleague is adamant the bloke he worked with had no reason to make it up. Anyway... the (ahem..."alleged") back-handers and scams that were perpetrated by the Conservative councillors that have made them a tidy few £ millions of profit on every £1 spent in buying Manston has been very well reported by Private Eye over the years. Why that magazine doesn't get more readers I'll never know... I guess people simply cannot grasp the ease and enormity of the scams and cons, perpetuated on them by those put forward to be 'elected' by the ignorant masses to 'humbly serve' the ignorant masses. Democracy is one big sham to keep the masses subdued into thinking they have a choice.
Anyway... In KentOnline a few years back I jokingly started the rumour that 'Operation Stack' should be moved to Manston, (for non-Kent residents this is what it's called when Dover Port is closed and all the lorries to Europe 'stack up' closing the motorways, turning them into two big car-parks). Guess what?... 12 months later and the runway was suddenly populated with PortaLoos and used as an enormous lorry park when Dover was closed!! My prediction is that when the chaos caused by Brexit kicks in the airport will be used as an enormous Custom's Clearing Station. It's no coincidence that Thanet Council was very Pro-Brexit, and those councillors are the very same ones who will make a massive, personal, financial killing when the UK breaks from Europe!!!
As I say... To the Elite, the voting, newspaper reading, TV watching, masses are ignorant, manipulated sheep. Nothing more.

There are secret tunnels under the airfield that go many miles underground, and bunkers deep underground too, as well as underground munition storage during WW2 and the Cold War, they are still in use today by the MOD hence why the base is only open once per year for people to fly into.

H Ian and crew love the channel.
i was brought up near Manston and had friends parents that were firemen at manston back in the `1970's when it was the main crash landing airport for the uk . Being the second longest runway in the UK it was an ideal location .
But I remember when the terminal was being built in the 1990's i think it was but building had to be temporarily stopped because they found a stash of bombs while they were digging the foundations . Apparently they were not ww2 as you would expect from a ww2 RAF station but ww1 with handles to hold them by to drop out of the aircraft by hand .
Also back in the 1970's there was Coast Guard Sea king helecopter based there .
And as teenagers i think myself and many other people learnt to drive at the Manston loop .

Excellent. I have such happy memories of going to visit my grandparents in Ramsgate in the '70s and my Dad stopping by the perimeter fence in his Cortina so that we could watch the RAF taxi out prior to take-off. If my memory serves me right, they were MD Phantoms. The pilots would wave as they taxied past close to the road. Thanks guys

At 01:53, that vehicle is a Douglas aircraft tug. One of these was extensively modified and used in the movie 'Aliens', as the Colonial Marines' Armoured Personnel Carrier. The tug is strong enough to pull most modern airliners. RAF Manston is featured in the first episode of the 1968 TV show, 'Joe 90', when the titular character flies a captured Russian aircraft there.

Sad to see the old airport closing. I delivered an aircraft to Manston many years ago. The MN in front of the tower is the airfield identification letters. The tower would have a had a beacon that flashed MN in morse too.

Great video. I flew in and out of Manston a few times on Dan Air. The terminal building in the video looks very well preserved. The fact the terminal and approach lights are still standing leads me to think there could be a future for Manston as an airport again some day. I always remember an Omni Air aircraft parked there. It never moved and became a landmark. A Nigerian airline aircraft always sat there too.

Hopefully I’ve heard in a few years it’ll be refurbished for freight and commercial use, as it has 19 stands for aircraft. And they are planning to also build a 65,500 sq m cargo facility and a new air traffic control tower, such as refurbishing the terminal for I believe 2023. Airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair could want slots.

i was 12 years old when i was in the ATC joined 54sq based in eastbourne used manston as a flight trainning school learning to fly chipmunks .we each got around 25-30 mins of flying time.i was 1 of the lucky ones to fly over the pier after the night storm (you can check it out )after the flying we got the chance to learn how to shoot the .303 SLRS and the bolt action .303s..that day i got my crossed rifes with 5 balleyes on 1st go .i also remmber going to the tower to watch the aircraft come in to land and take off.the gate you both was at is where we went in to show our pass books.in the early autumn 10 of us did some glider flying over the weekend .i just missed out on flying the trainer jets the jet provost or JPs for short.its a shame its ended up like it has .just so you know the LIGHTS that you both was under are not backwards you was facing the wrong way .we used the lights as a landing mark zone that points to the runway.also there used to be a yellow sea rescue helicopter not far from the runway and was always at the ready.i got the chance to sit in the cockpit was a bit of a climb up on the outside .how things change as we get older.thanks for bringing back good memories from what was a wonderful time i had there.

Stumbled onto this video & interesting to see how it looks since I was based there 1987-1989, arriving at the time of the Great Storm. During my time I was lucky enough to fly with Boss Stonham's flying circus of No.1 Air Experience Flight's RAF Chipmunks to survey devastated Kent & the Channel Tunnel terminal building site. I also managed to fly with the Search & Rescue Wessex & Sea King as well as some local civilian helicopters.
You missed the Defence Fire Services training School (which is about to close) & was known as Central Training Establishment (CTE) back in the day & they made extensive use of the burning area and aircraft wrecks for crew rescue training.
Interesting segment around the runway approach lights too. I'd be interested to know who's the farmer/landowner of the area around the approach lights (at both ends of the runway) - I heard a very interesting tale in the bar when I was there & he/she/they may want to make contact with me !

How this airport never became a success is a crying shame. You've got Stansted and Southend in Essex. Another 4 airports with London in their name and Southampton and Bournemouth not that far from each other and the airport nearest to the European countries is closed. The sooner it's reopened the better
