  • Over the Memorial Day break, I went to Myrtle Beach, SC with my family and I checked out one of the local VRCade's, The Nexus VR. They had a Virtuix Omni which is one of the first omni-directional treadmills. I actually had a fun time using it and it wasn't as bad as I expected. There's still issues of jumping and crouching/prone in games, but as a method of movement, it felt really cool. Being so used to VR clearly helped me, I'm not sure how long it normally takes people to get used to it. Once I really put my faith into it that it would hold my full leaning weight, it was pretty fun.

I got the chance to try one today and it’s very difficult when you first get on. I could barely stand let alone run, It’s like standing on ice or walking on wet tile. It was interesting but it just doesn’t feel right to have to lean so far to move slightly, my body kept telling me i was going to fall so I would throw my leg out to catch myself and it would slide back and I would do it all over again.

Yeah, they were a solid bunch. After I tried all the VR stuff and I finished my hour, I let them know I was opening a VRCade in TN and we talked well past their closing time about all sorts of VR things.

Looks really cool but crouching to pick stuff up is gonna be a problem.

That's exactly what my thoughts and concerns were about it. In the right game, this thing is pretty fun, but it isn't for every game. I still think that room-scale movement is the best for VR. This did make me more optimistic towards the future of omni-directional treadmills.
