  • Mike "G-Man" Gminski was a good center but who would have thought that his night of 41 points and 22 rebounds (both are career highs) would come against the NBA champions Boston Celtics!? Mike pounds The Chief and Bill Walton under the baskets, scores with efficiency (15/23 from the field, 11/12 from the charity line) and rocks a badass beard. He shouldn't have rubbed it in with that alley-oop at the end of a decided game though, four days later, at the closing game of the season, the Celtics had some revenge and destroyed the Nets 135 to 107. By the way, you just have to love that typical 80s outro: funky music playing, a replay of a unathletic white center making an alley-oop and the whole reel ending with a shot of team-mates high-fiving. April 9, 1986.

He grew older very quickly in the '90s, but he had very consistent and durable '80s.
I am glad to see him at his best. Thanks.

I grew up a Celtics fan in the 80s and watched every game I could. All of the Celts away games were broadcast on TV WLVI channel 56 with Gil Santos and Bob Cousy announcing on TV. I vividly remember watching this game, which is why I searched for it on RUclips! So thrilled it is here.. What a game for the G-man! I grew up in CT so I followed Gminski's career as he is from Monroe CT. That summer of 1986 I got to meet Mike at a Poconos PA basketball camp (I was 10 years old). Now I live in Monroe and my kids go to his high school (Masuk High). I am thrilled RUclips actually has this!

I grew up in Monroe Connecticut and I'm a year younger than Mike. I knew him a little, of course everyone knew who the kid was who was taller than his teacher in fifth grade. Nice kid, good at baseball and football in addition to basketball. Little League parents demanded that he get moved up to play with 14 year olds when he was 12 because he already had a man's body. He rocked a home run out of one field, across a driveway, and into another fenced-in field. He also won the National Punt, Pass and Kick Competition when he was 12 or so. Smart too, graduated in 3 years with all As. Also, from what i heard, he wanted to go to UCLA and follow Walton but was only offered a partial scholarship.

The Celtics first and last loss of the 85-86 regular season was against the New Jersey Nets! The Celtics lost the season opener to New Jersey, and then lost the 80th game of the season to New Jersey (the game in this video)
However, the Celtics played NJ one last time, in the final game of the regular season, and blew them out 135-107 @ Boston

Good offensive player. Him and Dawkins made quite an effective center combo for the Nets.

That night was definitely a career night .G-man for his 14 year career averaged 12 points 7 rebounds and like 2 assists so to put up those numbers against the Celtics was pretty damn good.If he had had the good fortune to play for the Celtics given the health of Bill Walton then maybe the C's defend the title against the Lakers in 87 and are successful.

It sounds like a cross between 70s porn music and early basketball video game music.

The 1985-86 Celtics only lost 3 regular season games by double digits. This is one of the three games.

Mike was really solid and had a game of his life. Robert Parish looks very lethargic and unmotivated here. Maybe burnt out. Buck Williams was great for this team and a borderline HOFer. Unfortunately, Michael Ray Richardson was suspended for drugs halfway thru the season and they had no PG who could compete against the great guards for the next several years
Also, Otis Birdsong went down with injuries and basically his career was over within a couple of years. Mike G. Was good offensively but a subpar defender. This team had a good run in the early to mid 80s.

He wasn't athletic but definetelly a very smart and efficient basketball player. I like his style. Great shooter, blocker and rebounder! Gminski was probably the best free throw shooter center. During his career, he had over 84%!

How come Gminski’s name never comes up in discussions of best nba centers of all time. I mean, from 79 to 86, he was like the white Bill Russell.
