I used mine for 2 months straight on 20lb tanks with a filter and thought I would be okay based on the instructions. But I clogged my filter and heater with the oils. I'm going to invest in the buddy hose and change filters more often. The agent that's added to propane is oily and builds up in tanks especially when they are overfilled. Great video 👍
From the video, the Mr Buddy Big Buddy Heater, which you showed the inside of the same side of both of them.....well, the one you say is the older one and not the Pro, I don't see a quick connect port on the inside of that one, but the Pro has it. Well, I have the Mr Buddy Big Buddy Heater I bought about 3 years ago and it has the quick connect port in mine, but I don't have the fan, which is what they took away. I'm just wondering why the one you are calling the Pro has the quick connect with the fan, but the older version doesn't have either. Mine has the quick connect just without the fan. Why is this?
I have the "old" Big Buddy with the battery powered fan in it. I bought it last year for $120 at Sam's. Only difference it looks like between the Pro and what I got is the electronic start. I'm happy with my purchase because it was cheaper and I don't have to worry about the electronic start.
Yeah if you can grab one of the OG Big Buddy heaters that had the fan at the regular Big Buddy price its a great deal. I will say though the electronic ignition is awesome, just tape an extra AAA battery inside one of the propane doors so you have it, but they usually last a good year plus based on the other heaters I have with it
I have the same ‘old’ heater but with the fan. Hardly even even use the fan. Lol but I run that heater in the garage. I run a small heat hog not on my outings on the ice.
Ive been using the original Big Buddy heater with fan, for 15 winters now, set on medium, with a 20lb tank, in my living room. Saves alot on my oil heat. The fan does little, so i got a battery 6" fan which clips on handle and has 2 speeds. Works WAY better! 😮
I run two of the original BB pro with fan. They have the same battery door~ no screws. The fan is awesome. Helps a lot. Wouldn’t want to rely on electric start in Manitoba winters, I’ll keep my manual start! Great video comparing them!
Had the old one for about 15 years. Piezo igniter and with fan. It started giving me problems this year so I got a new Pro Series one and am very happy with it. 95% of it's use has been in my family room where I frequently use it while sitting and reading and sometimes stretching a little. It was also used a couple of times during "emergencies" , basement and garage work over those years but those incidences were relatively few. - The built in fan is a must, in my opinion. It's all about being able to best use the warmth that the machine is putting out. Augment the fan if you want. - The electric start is great. It's smoother, quieter, and easier to operate than the piezo style ignition. Keeping a spare battery handy for this is not a hard thing to do and the pilot can be easily lit by a lighter, match or candle anyways, in a pinch. Reliability of one over the other ignition system is not likely to be an issue. - Yes get the $10 6v fan power adapter for it to save you the rediculousness of the D batteries in a frequent or long use situation. - Yes utilize 20lb propane tanks for outdoors and refillable bottles indoors according to your needs. - Get the right hose for the external tank connection and you won't need to replace the filter every year. For me, I went for ease of use by spending a few extra bucks up front to start using the conveinences I chose to take any small, reocurring agravations out of the picture via the features that I'll most likely use and appreciate over and over again.
I’m also in the same boat where I have the OG one with the fan. Having to rely on electric start does not appeal to me. Great comparison and awesome video as usual!
Not sure I want to deal with a battery to start a possibly lifesaving heater in a 'survival situation'. The fan is nice but also needs batteries. I think I'm going to stay with the older version and not worry about it lighting. Also, will put a heat activated wood stove fan on top... needs no batteries and is quiet. Sometimes you just can't improve upon the 'tried and true' version. Thanks for the comparison video... it helped a lot.
Good Info, Thanks - Piezo - Have the fan and 6v jack with Piezo ignition. If you have a dead ignition battery your screwed ! Always in the middle of the night with no spares. But still nice improvement.
Thank you for your help. For now, im with the order model ( im old fart been hunting for 51 years and mr. Heater has always been with me more than my wilol). Maybe im just old-fashioned, but like everything new, i always let Mikey try it out - 1970s Mikey commercials.
I would suggest a thermal fan instead of the D batts for the fan. Having a battery required would be an issue if your battery is drained and not close to any stores and with piezo ignitor did not require a batt as well to light the flame. I would pass on the Pro model and buy the original.
If it can be implemented well I agree, only portable one with a thermostat I have found so far is the Flame King and those have issues in how they open and close the gas valve using the thermostat
I just got one and my fan is far from quiet as shown in this video! I think I'd rather have the old starter vs the one that requires a battery. Another thing I've noticed is that the first burner always has a flame going up to nearly the grate, even on low, while the second one doesn't. I compared this to my regular buddy and I don't see the same issue with its single burner.
The 106 that was on the basically half off price was bundled with the GT54-UHD transducer so a discontinued and promo only product. Garmin came out with the Ultra 2 series that is now in stores, so all the Ultra 106's including those with the newer GT56-UHD transducer are considered previous model and will no longer be sold as current inventory. From my experience though, I bet around the holidays we will see them pop back up again for ~$1000 and sometimes on other random promo periods
Good information, and thanks. I have a Mister Buddy heater that I use when it gets really cold here in Tennessee. Which doesn't seem to happen nearly as often as it did when I was growing up, and that is fine with me. November was COLD when I was a kid half a century ago. But it can get cold in the winter even now, and if you are willing to Zone Heat, this thing is perfect for keeping a den or living room warm when it's really cold outside. I sleep in the Lazyboy recliner in my den anyway, as sleeping slightly inclined is WAY better for you than sleeping in a bed. When you're old, and I am. I hooked up a large tank to it and when we have a freezing snap, I run it day and night for about 4 or 5 days straight. Works like a champ. I don't need to keep the rest of the house nearly as warm as the room I spend my time in, and so I don't. Get a refill for 20 bucks and ya good to go for another cold spell.
Excellent vid! Been thinking about a purchase as back-up. Great detail and side-by-side that will help us all. PRO seems like best option if able. Thank you s much!
My hunting buddy (I think, I have several of these heaters) has the Electronic Ignition behind the door on the left side. the AA Battery is behind the Button.
I have been looking to upgrade my Buddy heater. I have the smaller one at the moment. I am wondering with the abnormally warm winter if I should wait until spring and see if the price drops. I currently use a stove fan on mine, but like the idea of the all in one. Since I am a flash/headlight junkie, I always have extra batteries with me so that is a non issue. Does the internal fan push hard enough to move the heat significantly ? After writing this I clicked on you links and Amazon has them for $131.48. I think I am going to buy one.
If you are looking at the Pro they might go on a deal once they have been out for a while, but that may take a while. If you are looking for the standard Big Buddy, now is a good time to buy as you can get them for $109.99 (perhaps even cheaper if you find a better random sale). Only time the standard Big Buddy is cheaper is usually Black Friday time frame when they go down to $89.99 & $99.99 depending on the day The internal fan is decent - I wouldn't say anything amazing, but I might try and see if there is a way to upgrade it to a higher CFM fan
I would have thought the new heater was less money with that POS battery igniter. I have never had a problem with my piezoelectric starter, and it is always ready. Piezo is a very reliable ignition source and doesn't have a corrosive bomb inside if you forget to take it out when winter is over. As far as the fan, my old Buddy Heaters have fans and I my farts move more air than the fan. I tried it a long time ago and replaced it with a thermal fan for a wood stove. I take my heaters with me to the Nevada desert for a back up in my camper and I keep them in the original box when they are not being used. I use one of them to heat my shop all winter, 24/7, 9 gallons in 7 days. I measure my propane in gallons, just like the man who sells it to me! If you asked for pounds of propane you might get slapped! A Texas Fruitcake metal box is the perfect size to keep your extra hoses and filters as well as your thermal fan, but any of the cheap snap-lock boxes from Costco would work fine. Keep them clean and test them before you use them in the fall and you will never be left out in the cold, pun intended!
I think I will go with the original one. I want it for winter power outages so the newer one would be the better choice but we are on the starting line of WWIII. If something happens in the states, I don't want to worry about a battery or a lighter to get warm.
Thanks, yes, it is several of these in a row: at.fish/PlusinnoRodRack They come in multiple different package styles, I bought 3 of the 2 pack ones and put them all in a row, then put some strip lights underneath them. Love them for both open water and ice rods. I'll do a video come Spring on them 👍
Greetings: I looked close whilst watching. 2 B clear, the old does NOT have switch or jack? I am seeking old (piezo) unit with fan. Knowing how 2 CK 4 fan would B helpful. Thx 4 the share
Thanks for the informative comparison. I've found that those furnace style electric ignitors are very prone to breakage from jolts, and it's also important to not get any finger prints on them when replacing them as they will die much faster - so I'm going to go with the trusty piezo version on the base model. I hear that there are fans that spin by being heated, but have no experience with those. Any thoughts on those aftermarket fans?
Oh cool. We just got ours on sale. I didn't know there was a pro version and that happens to be the one we just bought for $100. 😊 The battery features are really handy.
Question: if you use the big buddy pro with a 20lb tank do you have to plug in two of them (one to each side) to make both sides of the big buddy heater to work. if you only use one side will only one side heat up?
@@AlexTimm Thats great. I appreciate the response. i have my pro in route with the buddy stock hose so no filter required, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a separate connection for the 20lb connect on the back side of the swivel connection? if so would i need a regulator on that? sorry for all the questions new at this. Thank you Alex.
Sorry for not seeing this until now. There is a quick connect fitting if you want to use it for the 20lb tank, and if you do, yes then you need a regulator for it. I prefer using the screw on hose myself as those quick connect fittings over a short period of time can get harder to put on and snap into place and then go regulator needed
Sucks fan version not avalable in alaska but big buddy works fine indoors just need good air flow had no sweating problem with good vent warms whole house great 😊
Greetings: I prefer piezoelectric over the electronic. Simplicity is generally dependable . Convenience and over tech generally not. As such I would like 2 find a source (preferably local) 4 the old with the fan. Thx 4 the share.
So basically two major features one the fan into the electric starter not impressed with that electric starter when there is no other way of starting it without the battery. Absolutely love the idea of the fan.
I'll add it in the description, it is this hose: at.fish/Heater10ftHoseF273704 No need for a fuel filter with it and it won't gum up your heater, it is a special composition of the rubber and the only one made like it.
@AlexTimm I would still recommend the filter the propane you get from your 20lb is not near as clean and filtered as the extra clean propane from the small 1lb tanks.
So, absolute beginner , novice in understand how these things work. Will be buying one , how long does a 1lb can of propane last? I’ve never owned one of these things in my life so also this video is 8 months old and I am just now seeing this. Where is the best place now to get one?
I probably won't get a answer but I have been trying to ask Mr heat should I be using a filter with the Coleman all purpose propane tank the little one
No issues with the Heat Hog heaters. I will be filming the comparison video coming up here soon between those two and the Flame King. I prefer the Big Buddy Pro over the Heat Hog 18k BTU
I changed my little buddy heater for a heat hog and it's the worst mistake I made this fishing season lol. Its almost useless on low mode it sputters and sounds loud like the fuel isn't burning well. I'm thinking of selling it and just going back to a little buddy heater
Greetings: Clarification - Both ignitors R "electric" 1 is non-electric (piezoelectric) not needing battery. The latter is electronic needing battery. Thx 4 the share.
dont waste your time with propane. been doing the van life/camping trips with the buddy heaters. The heat just goes straits up and Too much moisture is produced from those plus you need ventilation or you’ll get headaches and wake up with a metallic taste in your mouth. The Hcalory tb2 diesel heater is the BEST portable/stationary heating system on the market! plus all the app features and temperature control and timers, you wont be disappointed. plus it blows the air so it circulates dry hot air. Propane has always be a pane, i mean pain.
I don't understand why you had to shut the heaters off to not "heat up the electronics" (mentioned after you turned the first heater on) or "for electronics use" after you turned the second one on. Certainly they're designed to stay on? I didn't understand why you felt you had to shut them off right away.
Why would they use D cell batteries for the fan!? Switch to a rechargeable battery pack. There should also should be a back up manual ignitor for when the battery is dead in the electric ignition while you are out on the ice.
Big buddy is a little late.....Dewalt heater has had these features for years now. You can use your Dewalt batteries to operate fan and it can charge multiple phones/devices. .....Mr buddy....no Bueno
At 1st glance I was immediately gonna get this But, NOW (after watching the whole video). I Will PASS. Why? You are freezing yer *** Off and you Cannot light it Because can't find a fresh AA batt.!! 2. The fan seems very weak. I have the stove fan (it also is weak) but it requires NO battery! The Original Big Buddy is simple. The PRO has too many parts that can Fail.🤔
I looked at that also. Very little capacity. The masses would never notice that. Just as well save the money and use the regular heater; it puts out good heat.
If you look in your Mr Heater owners manual at the parts drawing you will find that your heater has a psi regulator installed inside. No need for you to add a second one. Sure, if you use genuine Mr Heater hose it will not deteriorate & flake off clogging your hose or burner jets. HOWEVER, How clean is the fuel from your exchange tanks? Is the tank an old one? Probably. Is it rusty inside? Maybe. Perhaps the use of an external filter might not be a bad idea JUST IN CASE. Mr Heater tells us to never, NEVER, N E V E R place your external tank in the same space as your heater lest it leak & kill everyone in that space AND/OR the gas make its way to the open flame & burn you to death. HOWEVER#2, The Buddy Heater is designed with a pocket to store a 1lb fuel bottle in the side JUST INCHES FROM THE OPEN FLAME But this 1lb bottle is OK, like, 1lb bottles NEVER leak. Users NEVER screw the bottle to the heater half loose of anything like that. Not EVER. !

Yes filters on hoses are critical unless you use the 1 hose that doesn't need them, this one: at.fish/Heater10ftHoseF273704
I have owned the Original Big Buddy for many years and it has the built-in fan.
Works good.
Same

I prefer using the screw on hose myself as those quick connect fittings over a short period of time can get harder to put on and snap into place and then go regulator needed
Just responded above 👍
Just got the bigger one with the fan for $99 at Tractor Supply!
Sucks fan version not avalable in alaska but big buddy works fine indoors just need good air flow had no sweating problem with good vent warms whole house great 😊
What size room will one of these heat?
i appreciate this excellent video i just purchased a big buddy pro series
After watching your review I decided the OG version is for me. Battery free ignition and the fan doesn’t seem to be much of a game changer
Can you do a longevity test on the Pro series on how long the fan lasts using batteries ? Is it so short of use that it's concerning?
I have a big buddy with the fan. It uses batteries over about 3 days.
I bought an ac wall adapter to run it with fan for longer times in the shop.
Have you considered a comparison of the Heat Hog ?
Yes, planning on doing on this fall 👍
Great video!! Thanks
I won't be upgrading. I already have the Big Buddy, a wood stove fan w/attachment and the 10ft. hose for 20lb. bottles.
@AlexTimm, what is the best hose to use with this heater for a larger propane tank? I don't see the link.
I'll add it in the description, it is this hose: at.fish/Heater10ftHoseF273704
No need for a fuel filter with it and it won't gum up your heater, it is a special composition of the rubber and the only one made like it.
@AlexTimm I would still recommend the filter the propane you get from your 20lb is not near as clean and filtered as the extra clean propane from the small 1lb tanks.
I got the new one with the ignitor it's sparking but no flame . Please help
Are you using a 1lb tank or bigger one with hose?
So, absolute beginner , novice in understand how these things work. Will be buying one , how long does a 1lb can of propane last? I’ve never owned one of these things in my life so also this video is 8 months old and I am just now seeing this. Where is the best place now to get one?
These units will eat the little tanks like candy. Best to really hook it up to bbq size propane tank to go through the night.
@ thank you, I was afraid of that.
So it’s the old big buddy with electric ignition. I’d rather have the regular ignition so I don’t have to worry about another battery.
I probably won't get a answer but I have been trying to ask Mr heat should I be using a filter with the Coleman all purpose propane tank the little one
No you only need the filter with the hose.
Did you have issues with the Heathogs?
Was going to get one but I don't want to Overheat the electronics!!!
Couldnt keep mine lit in the boat . Wind kept putting it out .
dont waste your time with propane. been doing the van life/camping trips with the buddy heaters.
I believe he's referring to his camera equipment
Why would they use D cell batteries for the fan!? Switch to a rechargeable battery pack. There should also should be a back up manual ignitor for when the battery is dead in the electric ignition while you are out on the ice.
Guys, if your battery goes dead just light it with a lighter or a match or anything you can get a spark onto the pilot light.
Sams club $149. Big Buddy Pro. Comes with propane hose and AC adapter.
The wood stove fan is better then the bult in fan for the big buddy heaters blows out way more hot air!!
They are awesome.
Not a fan of another electronic part (ignition).
I think it’s worth it…I like the quality of the heater s
Good video 👍🤳
I prefer the old style and use a stove fan instead of the heaters fan
I like the "old" one better. No batteries. No worries. What I like about the old one. Simple.
Bam !
I'll keep my old one.
run a test to see if and how well the low oxygen sensors work vs a carbon monoxide detector meter that measures the carbon monoxide level.
no i have a couple and love them no electronics either is just more to go wrong with electronics look at cars haha
Why not bring it back with a battery pack and a usb chargeing plug??? So no update really....I have the old one with the fan.
4:02 Bose.
I just bought the Pro and manual that comes with it is trash. I like the heater so far but had to search videos for how it worked
Deal breaker having to have the battery to light it
I can understand that for sure
The Big Buddy Pro turns on with the same sound as a gas stove.
And?
Big buddy is a little late.....Dewalt heater has had these features for years now. You can use your Dewalt batteries to operate fan and it can charge multiple phones/devices. .....Mr buddy....no Bueno
Thank you for the info,,I didn't know I had a Big Buddy Pro. WoW
Pretty ineffective fan for the amount they charge. Battery powered electronic starts usually last about 6 months, max.
At 1st glance I was immediately gonna get this But, NOW (after watching the whole video). I Will PASS. Why?
You are freezing yer *** Off and you Cannot light it Because can't find a fresh AA batt.!! 2. The fan seems very weak. I have the stove fan (it also is weak) but
it requires NO battery! The Original Big Buddy is simple. The PRO has too many parts that can Fail.🤔
I used my (NEW) Big Buddy for a few hours yesterday, today with new bottles it won't start. A bit angry right now. Upgrade, nah.
the regulator gets plugged happened to me a tiny peace of sand was on the tank when I put it on
I like my Dewalt heater
Cool they added the electric ignition
Barely moves paper...."pretty awesome". Cmon man... LOL :)
I looked at that also. Very little capacity. The masses would never notice that. Just as well save the money and use the regular heater; it puts out good heat.
@@truthseeker5890 I love my Big Buddy and the new electronic ignition is sweet, but that fan is just not good at all.
Get a dewalt heater if you use a dewalt auger drill
You do notice a lot! I have 2, running them for a few years.
It's not the strongest fan, but watching it back the paper test does not do it justice, it actually moves the heat pretty well. Lol
My Mr heater 30000 has electric lighter. just change the battery every winter.
If you look in your Mr Heater owners manual at the parts drawing you will find that your heater has a psi regulator installed inside.
No need for you to add a second one. Sure, if you use genuine Mr Heater hose it will not deteriorate & flake off clogging your hose or burner jets.
HOWEVER,
How clean is the fuel from your exchange tanks? Is the tank an old one? Probably. Is it rusty inside? Maybe. Perhaps the use of an external filter
might not be a bad idea JUST IN CASE.
Mr Heater tells us to never, NEVER, N E V E R place your external tank in the same space as your heater lest it leak & kill everyone in that space
AND/OR the gas make its way to the open flame & burn you to death.
HOWEVER#2,
The Buddy Heater is designed with a pocket to store a 1lb fuel bottle in the side JUST INCHES FROM THE OPEN FLAME
But this 1lb bottle is OK, like, 1lb bottles NEVER leak. Users NEVER screw the bottle to the heater half loose of anything like that.
Not EVER.
!
Just get a wood stove fan and save the batteries
Great job god bless
Going with the big buddy pro
