The Re-floating of the MT Phoenix tanker

- The tanker, the MT Phoenix got in trouble in the vehement storm that was belting on the Kwazulu-Natal north coast on the 26th of July 2011. It eventually stranded on the beach off Sheffield Beach with its stern coming in first and as the stern got stuck it swung around until the bow almost rested on dry beach the next morning after the storm subsided...This video is about a well engineered Ship Salvaging project.
On the 27th of July 2011, the storm had subsided and the tanker set the scene for what would bring many tourists to the area. There was a strange kind of beauty in the stranding, like a majestic elephant bull that has come to the end of the road
The first refloating attempt took place at about 16h30 on the 31st of July 2011. The ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA was the only tugboat used in the operation with the ZTUG SMIT AYANDA an onlooker. A single cable was used that was attached to the original anchor chain of the tanker. The swell was good but probably not good enough for the day and the ship didn't move during this operation. The operation was eventually disbanded.
After the first refloating attempt took place, salvaging work continued and the oil that was in the tanker were pumped out through the attached tubeline.
The second refloating attempt took place at about 16h30 on the 1st of August 2011. The ZTUG SMIT AYANDA was tied to the front of the ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA and a single cable was used that was attached to the original anchor chain of the tanker. The swell was impressive following the recently passed spring tide. The attempt swung the hull of the MT Phoenix around but the chain proofed to be weak and broke in the process, forcing the team to give up the attempt for the day.
After the second refloating attempt the ship is pushed back to its original position by the successive swells. The swip swivels around its stern which is the part where it is actually more firmly stuck and it originally stranded with its stern first as well..Later the maritime helicopter removes the crew from the ship and the operation for the day is abandoned again...
The third refloating attempt took place after dark at about 18h30 on the 3rd of August 2011. The ZTUG SMIT AYANDA was again tied to the front of the ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA and a single cable was used that was attached to the original anchor chain of the tanker. The tanker didn't want to move nothwithstanding the bigger force of the combined two tugboats. At about 18h50, the chain that was attached to the bow snapped again and in this long 30 second exposure we can clearly see the sparks that eminated as the chain was pulled at high speed through the holes.
The opportunity that lied in the remains of the spring tide was now exhausted and the operation was now postponed for a month till the next new moon and spring tide and in the meantime more salvaging and cleanup took place as well as planning for the next operation..This time two cables would be used connected to the two tugboats seperately.
On Friday the 2nd of September 2011 the final refloating exercise on the
MT Phoenix off Sheffield Beach on the Kwazulu-Natal North Coast of South Africa was to commence. The refloating required a swell of at least 2m and as New Moon went past a few days earlier, the spring tide was still dominant. It was anticipated then that inclement weather from the south would hopefully contribute to the effect and the peak of the tide was going to be at 18h27. Earlier the afternoon the two tugboats ZTUG SMIT AMANDLA and ZTUG SMIT AYANDA were already present and connected with seperate cables to the bow section of the ship. The ship was more firmly fixed on its stern side and the idea was to swivel it around by pulling the bow away from the beach to face seawards.

Thank you for the excellent photography and the calm, soothing music as we view a rather dramatic and dangerous operation. Keep up your good work.
Thank you so much for your kind words aeg100.
Music loud. Music distracting. Music annoying. Cool filming.
Thank you. Points taken.
People are still watching this and commening on it after 6 years. Must be something worthwhile there.
Makes you think, doesn't it?
Christiaan, ignore the music haters. It is obvious you put a lot of time and passion into making this video. Your perseverance in documenting all the refloating attempts led to some spectacular photos and footage. I was sad to find out that after all that effort the ship was scuttled. Also amazing to me is the patience with which you respond to the critical comments. You could tell them all off but you always answer with humility and humor. You have a new subscriber!
+Brian Adams Thank you Brian for making the time to write this nice comment. It is comments such as this that pushes us to try harder. Have a lovely day.
I am really glad you enjoyed it so much! There were a lot of cheering and encouragement from the onlookers in the real situations.
great video...less crazy music next time
brendan bogroll Thank you boss.
sorry buddy
Christiaan Kleynhans never mind just better nusic

Narrated by Groundskeeper Willy.
Docktor Jim Hehehehehe, are you saying I am Scottish? Think again.
Christiaan Kleynhans I am also Scottish. Your accent is spectacular. I'm the product of a McKinstry, a Stirling, a Mitchell and a Guy, and I can't even half fake a Scottish accent that well.
Docktor Jim Hehehehe Docktor Jim, I am South African and far from being Scottish. To be honest, I am originally from German descent and I grew up with a language called Afrikaans that gave me this accent. It is not suppose to be fake, it is real and we do pronounce certain sounds very similar to what the Scottish do.
Christiaan Kleynhans I see.
Christiaan Kleynhans I am english and recognized that afrikaans accent in a heartbeat
I don't like the music with this clip. To me it was too loud and did not allow me to enjoy footage I otherwise would have. If it was a lot lower in db, more in the background, it may have been ok, however, I would have just preferred to hear the ocean. Beyond that, it is a well produced little clip, thanks for posting it..
Thanks for your constructive criticism.
Thank you Mr Christiaan : Professional work and the successful re-process the soul to the body of the vessel..Captain M.H.M
Thank you snipefordinner. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the beautiful story. It adds to the value here and is highly appreciated.
I like how you dubbed music over the video so that you cant hear the commentating..What is wrong with you people? Why put the commentating on here if you are going to drown it out with ever so annoying carnival music?
Christiaan Kleynhans
Hmmmm I heard every word. Nice job ole chap!
Thank you Daniel.
I noticed that you have moved up to 6 subscribers. Well done!
Thank you Barry. The sea is really a sign that we should show respect. I often see some huge ships coming pass. Most amazing to me are the Car carriers.
I am marveled at this video. That ship lived up to its name "Phoenix"- it really rose from its "ashes", considering she has attracted so much people to witness her rising. Thanks for posting sir, i appreciate it👍
Brilliant!!!!
Thank you very much Daniel, it is much appreciated.
Love the comments hating on the music lol.. So wait the scuttled the ship? As in sank it?
Yip, they sank it unfortunately. In deep waters.
one bad ass tug boat
Yip, amazing.
amazing video. it shows a little bit about science, astrology, mathermatics, biology and conservation as well how the south african accent sounds and the culture of the man that posted this video. awesome proud to be a south african.
Thank you MissDistarr for your defence. I appreciate it and you are hitting the nail on its head. A video like this has no allocated budget or staff support. It is a one man amateur attempt at relaying a story as best as one could. It is kind of annoying to see people swear in the manner that they do as acknowledgment. You are a very nice person and I hope you have lovely day. Warm regards from KZN South Africa as well.
I can hardly hear the narration for the music, much to loud.
+Rockandrollrusty My apologies.
I didn't the music offensive nor to loud, the superimposed text could have been on screen a little longer, It is simple enough for the viewer to pause the video to allow all the time needed to read the text.
+dejanira2 Thank you dejanira2. The advantage of RUclips is that you can sometimes pause the video if you want to read properly.
background music too loud. Could not make all you were saying.
Sorry.
Thank you John for your kind and encouraging words.
Those tugs are huge! Must be incredibly powerful to have accomplished this rescue.
Loud music... What did he say? I'll have to watch this another 45 times
I don't mind. I love to get views.
@@ChristiaanKleynhans You mean you don,t care. You won,t get mine views again.
Interesting. Terrible music, though -- sounds like an 1980s arcade game.
Closer to 15th century Bach.
I wouldn't change my town for anything. Nicely developed but also tranquil and embedded in nature. And boring is not a word that ever crosses my mind as I have too much going on in my head.
Really heartening to see her float again. GREAT JOB!!
I rarely hear anyone post that the video would have been much better if it had music playing over the original video's audio.
I like classical music but it was too loud in this video. If it had been left off all together the video would have better.
Thanks awrwayne and point taken. It is hindsight now. Most of my newer videos used natural sounds or overlays that were made from natural sounds. Exactly because it was actually raised before.
Thank you very much! Those tugboats have enormous power...
That was incredible to watch, and fascinating how much time and effort were involved. Thanks for uploading it.
Suggest you re-edit, increase narration volume, use bigger font for subtitles {as well as allow more time to read them), and LOSE the MUSIC. This looks like it could have been a very interesting video.
Thanks for the advice Fredo. It is constructive. But as this video has reached over 12 million views, there is no way that I will tamper with it. I have thought of a remake in about four parts in the style of my latest videos.
Music is too loud. Drowns out the narration. Subtitles not displayed long enough too read
Use the pause option.
@@ChristiaanKleynhans pause darkens the image AND YT-player text overlays your too-tiny text making it impossible to read
Interesting story, but unfortunately I had to interrupt my viewing due to impossible music, which doesn't fit the subject at all and it's way overbalanced to narrative
@andreproject4285 You could have watched the remakes. This was my first video on RUclips and I had to use music that was legal. 13 million views. And I had an 8 minute limit. Now I have 5 episodes and the music is gone. Good luck.
@@ChristiaanKleynhans thanks, this one I found

The music is way to loud. It is really difficult to hear the commenter. The titles are shown for a way to short period of time so there is not time enough to read them.
Really poor editing!
Thanks. I had a look at your videos and I have learned a lot. We are here for each other.
Thank goodness for the tugboats and their pilots.
Yes Miss Di Starr.
It is nice to watch a video like this that has a steady camera. So many times the camera is shaking, or taking video of a point where you are unable to see the action being filmed. Nice work.
+Steven Strimling Thank you Steven. The wind was actually quite strong at times and I had a hard time to get enough steady footage and I had to trim it down. I had a flimsy tripod at the time but the ones that I use now are heavier and more stable.
Of you play music don't talk if you talk don't play music they don't go together
Did you hear the music that they played on the Titanic when she was sinking?
Can’t hear him talking. That music!!! . Omg
Don't worry, you will survive. It is only about 8 minutes and I won't send you a bill for it.
Beautiful waves! Are people allowed to surf in that beach or anything?
Hi There Hi There. Nope, this not normally a swimming beach because it is very rocky underwater. But about 3km more south we have lovely swimming beaches and we also have a big international surfing competition here every year.
Great video !
I am impressed by the power of those deep-sea tugs.
People, people. I do believe the man understands, after having been told about 10 times, that you all do not care for the music. Point taken. Give the man a break. To mention it yet again is simply overkill.
That being said, I thought you did a fine job on the video and would like to say thank you. I know a lot of time can go into making these and just know there are youtubers out there who appreciate your efforts.
Warmest Regards from Oregon, USA
Well, reading the comments, think I'll keep it muted...…………………………..lol
Good for you Captain.
seams like a waste of good steel.
Possibly..
Recently I made a fun video with my daughter. It is in a different line as the above documentary. We made it as a small little movie in which my daughter has a dialogue between two alter ego's of herself at two different ages.
GEN04:ONE YEAR OLD GENEVIEVE HAS A TOUGH DAY AT THE OFFICE WITH ALTER EGO
Jes they have the top salvage experts on there team ?think of the name Smit Lloyd ?of London Smit ?Germany and generally Dutch crew
thanks for the Video Christiaan, I really enjoyed the music. (because it was novel and new to me, I love hearing sounds that I am not accustomed to) When the Tugs were hooked up to her, I would get excited every time I would see a big swell, hoping that it would budge just a little. And then a fine climax at the end, when the stern finally broke free of the rocks and she was free! sad about her being scuttled though. Cheers mate, thanks!
Its a pleasure John. Yes, in that way it was like a story or movie with all its failures and the success at the end.
JUST...........................................INCREDIBLE FOOTAGE !!!
Thank you very much!!! :-)
Welcome! Weather was not so nice for
filmmaking - still you made great job !
All the best.
Thank you very much.
Really interesting film , but why the horrible music ? it sort o annoyed me !!
Sorry!
It really is an awesome little gem of a doc. Thanks for making it.
Thank you very much transientdreams
Thank you Arthur. Thanks for the nice words. I am glad it could take you back to another time. This event took place over about two months which is relatively small compared to the length of our days, but I think it will always form a prominent part of my life experience. While others wanted it to go ASAP, I enjoyed every moment of that and I enjoyed making this video, no matter how amateurish. I never expected so many views either.
Hi! Great footage and editing, but the music is far too loud, and it's hard to hear the narrator. Cheers!
Hi, thanks for your comments. Yes, I am aware of it, I have been answering this since 2011. This was my first video ever and I was pressed for time to keep it newsworthy and I thus made some mistakes. I can't correct it because this video is very succesful and it may not happen with a changed version.
The music was too loud and the speaker too soft
i couldn't hear what happened to the ship ????
Watch to the end. That is why I made the video.
the power of these tug boats is just amazing.
Thanks for a very interesting documentary. The amazing power of tug boats well documented.
Thank you very much Yuxin.
wtf is this music?!?!
+Lincoln Armstrong Classical Music.
The last song played on the Titanic?
Stop that inappropriate music ! Impossible to understand the speech !
+Jean-Louis BRUN I don't know how to do that.
Lol . Yeah I Survived it that music tho!!! . I should send you a Bill for having to listen to it . Lol
So tell us a bit about your successful videos and claim to fame? Maybe we can all learn from you.
I wish the news was this relaxing.
Good job. I liked your video a lot. Thanks for taking the time to do it.
You are so very welcome. Just keep making video's that YOU are proud of. That is what's most important. Just know that you told the story you wanted and you did it well. I simply cannot understand people sometimes. It takes such little effort to be kind to others yet they go out of their way to insult someone. Don't pay them any further attention. Take care and you have a great rest of your day!
Thank you Letor! Greetings back from the east coast of South Africa.
I made it through 2 minutes. Appreciate the efforts and realize it is your first video but edit out the music. It lends nothing to the documentary and is just plain annoying.
Maybe you can advise me how to edit out the music without affecting the success of theis video? If I could I would have.
sound messed up
I am sorry about your bad experience James. Did you enjoy it other than that?
Thank you for sharing your great footage! I know it took a lot of effort to put this together to share your perspective, and I really enjoyed seeing something that happened half a world away.
Thank you very much bijagirl. You are inspiring me. I hope to do more like this because of people like you. Have a super day.
Thanks Betty. Somebody told me that they scuttle the ships in very deep water as the cold water keeps the pollutants (fuel) in a solid state. That is what they have been doing around here. The community have suggested that the ship gets scuttled in shallower water for the sake of reef building but that never materialised.
the music track drowned out the narration.
I hope other than that, that you had some kind of pleasant experience. Not many videos in this line carry any narration at all.
It would have been nice to hear it though. Great video!
Thanks David. I muist admit, this was my first video and I wanted it out while it was still newsworthy. Lots of work went into it but I hurried. Also, I didnt have access to much legal music. And then the video went viral and there was no possibility to change it. Nothwithstanding it, the video has done well for all these years since 2011 and still brings views all of the time.
Well thanks for your patience and answering again. Appreciated.
Really enjoyed your video. Thanks for taking the time to put it all together. Liked the music and narration.
The music?
Bach.
shame that no one bothered to preview this video before uploading it perhaps they would have found that is nearly impossible to hear the person speaking due to unneeded Music being too loud
Let bygones be bygones. Nothing I can do about it now.
@@ChristiaanKleynhans if you have original footage you can just remake video with no music chap
Really chap. You have obviously never had a succesful video on RUclips. I have original footage of course. No guarantee that it will again perform that well. Do you want me to throw away 12.5 million views chap? And since it works I will accept that ot works well enough.
Well your first lesson is cut the Music down a bit so we can hear The Narrator . I will have to charge you for any more successful advice if I can help just let me know 😂😂
My apologies, I didn't realize that you are a genius and an expert. I went to have a look at your videos and i am very impressed. I love your minimalistic approach to both sound and video, it conveys the message very well. I do aplogize, this was my first video and it was made under enormous pressure in 2011 and I had nio experience. Nothwithstanding all of that, it became very succesful as you may notice from the views. I obviously didn't just sit there, I continued to make more videos and i tried to improve and sad to say, I don't think I will ever reach your high standards. Some people did enjoy aspects of this video. At that time, most people were just posting videos on RUclips of their cats and dogs and they didn't use any editing either. But so do we learn, don't you agree?
You are really inspiring me to up my standard. Very kind and understanding once again.
Thanks for this. It really made me feel special as well as I realized that you have observed so much of what I intended. And I believe the accent is honest and it tells more about the environment.
Not enough music, needs to be louder.
I CAN'T HEAR YOU!
I already posted my displeasure over that annoying loud music, heh.
shit music was too loud. hard to understand the commentator at the best of time. Thanks for the video none the less.
Thank you Barry.
Thank you very much for your kind words. Yes, it is amazing how many people witnessed this.
Good job sir.Thank you for that post.Well done.
mastersduhgree Thank you very much, I appreciate it.
Good video,awful music.
Poor Bach.
all I can hear is the music
Well, if you only hear music it must imply that there was only music. Did you expect something else?
Yes you south african!
What’s with the music!
Not everybody understand Bach.
Thank you very much and this is the commentary that I need to hear as it was my intention. I think RUclipsrs must spend more time to create more detailed and informative videos of special events rather than just posting clips. Clips can become viral but documentaries have more lasting value as I have learned from experience.
I liked the music also and the sound of the waves
Thank you Dan.
If you don't like the music, turn your volume down
interesting video ........ horrible loud music spoiled it in my opinion !!
We are sorry that you had this bad experience.
Christiaan Kleynhans, Hi l did not say watching this video was a bad experience that's a ridicules comment...l simply said the music was dreadful and too loud.....
This video became very successful. If it wasn’t I would have deleted it and replaced it. This was the first video I made for RUclips and also the most successful. When I edited it, I had to do it fast because I wanted to release it while it was still newsworthy. That was a goid decision because it worked. So far over 12 million views. You can’t use any music on RUclips, you need to have the rights to it. I used music that came with my video editing program and even then my video was blocked by RUclips because of that. I did mess up with the narrative, I admit as well. The mix with the music was bad. I made many more videos after that and I have improved all of the time. My likes vs dislikes on this video has been close to 80% through all the years since 2011, . Most of the time only the very annoyed leaves comments. Imagine if all 12 million did that? So I am stuck and I have to listen to people who have never produced any videos swear at me while I at least made an effort at my own time and cost to document this as well as I could at the time under pressure. some people actually like the music and of course, I did include subscripts as well.
Don't be so sensitive and uptight.
hehehehehe.
Sound is trrrible with the music
You are just having a bad day Benjamin. I understend! We are living in difficult times. It is not easy to see the beauty in anything anymore. I suggest you switch on the mute and read. If you cant keep up, use the pause. That is what is nice about RUclips. Seeing that you and me are just ordinary people and that this was my first attempt at a RUclips video in 2011, we have to accept that there may be errors. Especially as this video was produced under pressure with primitive equipment. The fact that I am almost at 13 million views and over 75% likes to dislikes, shows that there are people out there that can actually seethe beauty and found it informative. Better luck next time.
@@ChristiaanKleynhans its not critisism actually, its just directing your attention to it as i was also interested in it but was not willing to listen to a barely hearable soundtrack and music that fades your voice out.
@@benjamincoetzer7611 Thanks Benjamin. In ten years my attention has been drawn a lot to it and I have answered this many, many times. I just wonder why that is the only thing that people see.
@@ChristiaanKleynhans It's because this is good content wasted on a bad audio mixing. It's a shame for the work you put in. that's why people notice

Music to loud can't here you
Here or hear?
A Solid Thumbs Down: Why is the narration at such a low level and why is the useless music at such a high level? Do people ever listen to their own creations?
As long as you feel better now, I feel much better. This made my day.
Thank you Helio, I am glad you enjoyed it notwithstanding the flaws.
Hi this vidéo is a very great one ! Congrats and Bravos to you !
It's something not usual, the title is a very descriptive one, it's not one with "must see" titles or the like.
Your comments are very constructives and give a very good explanation of what happened.
Do not worry about some bad comments, your vid is very instructive. All those naysayers did not event think saying "Thank You".
As you I feel worried by some comments about racism, but never mind go on with the good job.

Germany. Bach.
Thanks Philip. I have answered this question quite a few times already because so many people ask it. There are so many factors that played its part that it is difficult to say. The community where it resided would have been up in arms as it is in an upmarket area. That is the short answer. I would have loved it if this thing could have become a hotel but that is also just fantasy. It could not have been dismantled there as there were no vehicle beach access as well as being disruptive.
