Hi! Great reaction! The song is kinda straightforward; she's singing about her current boyfriend who she's been with for 5 years, and she's imagining that life brought them together slowly (through this mythical invisible string) cause they were meant to be together, by picturing some details that connected them before they even met (like, when he first went to LA - he's from England - the first song that he heard in the cab was her song Bad Blood [bad was the blood of the song etc.] and he went to eat to her favorite restaurant before they even knew each other). The return in Centennial Park with him is kind of a full circle moment; when she mentions her ex boyfriend that she sends baby gifts to and is not on bad terms with, I think she means that life kind of "works out" in the end, it's a journey and you'll find your place! Looking forward to your next reaction, thank you for this one xx

To add to this explanation, there's a place in England called The Lakes (she wrote a song about it) that Taylor loves. When she & Joe went there for their 3 year anniversary the waitress told her she looked like Taylor Swift which she thought was great!😉 She had so many bad love experiences that now with Joe, (who she met at the Met Gala but didn't date him till later, meeting him in a dive bar in England I believe) she can put her past into a different perspective. This is a happy song about her gaining perspective on her past now that she's in a healthy relationship! Great reaction!

She found the waitress not recognizing her enjoyable and humorous since she said “omg has anyone ever told you you looo like Taylor Swift?” - it’s humorous and fun… she wasn’t offended at all.

This is one of the few songs on the album with a lot of very specific references to her own life and her relationship in particular. The line about the song in the cab references when her boyfriend was in LA for the first time (before they met) and heard her biggest hit at the time "Bad Blood" on the radio. And like you guessed they seem to have met or had one of their first dates at a dive bar, there are multiple references to it across her albums. Their anniversary trip down to "The Lakes" also gets picked up again on the last song of the album, so look out for that :)

Hahaha the waitress line is referencing a time fairly recently, maybe a few years ago. Supposedly she wears wigs/tries to disguise herself when she's in England and can be less recognized, so it's funny the waitress (likely) said "you look like Taylor Swift" And she has a song called Bad Blood, which was playing in the cab her boyfriend was in, also we don't know much about the dive bar except that she references it as the beginning of their relationship in a few songs (mainly Delicate)

Agree 100% about the verse "isn't it just so pretty to think". It's not something you say when you believe in an idea wholeheartedly. It's kind of saying "well, of course we're not *fated* to be together, but isn't it pretty to indulge yourself in this idea every once in a little while?". To me, there's even a tiny hint of melancholy to it (as is with 99% of her songs). If it was fate, then you wouldn't ever have to worry about the possibility of it ending, right?
The arrangement to this one on the studio version is painfully beautiful, if you haven't listened to it, try it out! Thanks for the reactions! I've been really enjoying your videos.

  • @amandam.4841

To explain the second verse... the first time he came to LA, her song, Bad Blood, was playing in the cab... and then he had dinner at her favorite spot, before he even met her (like, their paths could've crossed well before they actually met). And the part about "she said I looked like an American singer" was more about the waitress being coy, and not T being mad about not being recognized.. T and J have been notoriously private about their relationship and have kept a low profile whenever they're in public. Love what you're doing here, I'm excited to watch you hear mad woman and peace.

Just my personal interpretation: it's not as much about getting past relationships using your new relationship, but more about going through the harsh parts of love to mature and finally find something a bit more pure, a love worth keeping after a lot of disappointment and toxicity.
I always look forward to your videos! If you ever decide to also go through evermore I'll die, I like it ever more than folklore 🤭

It’s soo interesting seeing this song from the perspective of someone who doesn’t know a lot about Taylor’s personal life! This song is definitely like an Easter egg hunt for her fans because there are tons of very specific references about the lives of her and her current boyfriend while this “invisible string” was pulling them toward each other.

  • @brianinthedistrict

I love your commentary on the childish/youthful thought of “isn’t it pretty to think.” In the beginning of the song I’m assuming that she is referring to her teenage years in Nashville before becoming more famous- Centennial park is in Nashville. At the same time, Joe Alwyn (her current partner) was a teen in London, UK and worked at a yogurt shop before starting his acting career.

  • @robertthompson7242

She is a big believer in Karma. You end up where you are supposed to be.
She uses colors to indicate emotions; see her song, Red. It took her years to distinguish between passion (red) and love (golden). The string is golden (see the song Daylight, on Lover), and appears in the music video for Willow. And, as pixie dust, in the piano in Cardigan mv (where she also does an allusion to Peter Pan). The song touches on the stages of life for herself and bf Joe Alwyn, from her teenage wandering in a Nashville park (while he was working a London yogurt shop) through various heartbreaks, to now.
Long Pond Studio is Aaron Dessner's property near Hudson, NY; Antonoff's studio is tiny, in New York. If you get around to watching her Miss Americana documentary, you will see her in Antonoff's tiny, cozy studio in NYC, and in Max Martin / Shellback's larger, wood paneled studio in LA. And, in whichever home she is in at the moment -- her Nashvile estate (or her Music Row condo), the Manhattan expanded condo, LA, Rhode Island-- they all have pianos, and she said once that she has no clue how many guitars she actually owns (she was asked, when she was donating a tour guitar to a charity auction).

Bad Blood was one of her huge hits from her 2014 album, and it was playing in the cab the first time her boyfriend visited LA (where she also lived at the time) and went to her favorite restaurant (before they ever met). Just pointing out things that tied them together before they actually got together

I just love this song! There’s some call backs in these lyrics to other songs. In her album Reputation she refers to a dive bar in the song Delicate - this era was when she met Joe/ they started dating.
“Give me the blues and then purple pink skies” pays homage to her album (art) Lover which has a lot of songs about Joe. Also any time she refers to the color blue / gold = Joe. His favorite color is blue. And she sings about their love being golden.
The ex she mentioned is Joe Jonas who had a baby with wife Sophie Turner. The lakes reference you’ll get once you react to it! It’s the one and only deluxe song on this album!

I remember one music critic saying that Taylor is this generation’s Joni Mitchell. A wonderful comparison and a lovely compliment! Joni’s album ”Blue” was and is a masterpiece. I’m 59 and am very happy when younger people, especially musicians, discover great singer/songwriters from my generation. Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Todd Rundgren, Crosby Stills & Nash….and so many more. Taylor is not only a pop superstar, but truly an exceptionally gifted songwriter & performer. Thanks for your insightful reviews.

I spent many years a fan of TS not knowing her personal life (until I found chats and reacts like 2 months ago) so when I heard this song the first time my interpretation was someone in a relationship looking back at their life and memories together talking and looking back at all of those "moments" that brought you together or where you were before you knew each other. Those moments of pain when you were 15 (😬) and going through your first heartbreak that feel like you'll never be happy again. To me it's always been a very reflective song that you're singing to your life partner who through all the bullshit you both went through, you somehow still found each other.

  • @1DMapler18

That part you said in the beginning is something I've been talking about for a while now. You may have these grand ideals and preferences of someone you want to be with but at the end of the day, those are just abstract ideals and not a real person. Like of you find some one that you like but they don't fit your perfect idea in your head, do you just not go for it? If you find someone that you really like and vibe with, embrace it and let go of your idealized, abstract version of someone that doesn't exist

I can't get over how much Taylor sounds like Miles Davis in that every nuance of her singing inflection carries so much depth of feeling. She's not only hitting the notes, she is delving into the complex emotions of life and conveying a message.

  • @stillfangirlingtoday1468
    @stillfangirlingtoday1468 2 года назад +11

I think you should know Taylor is a hopeless romantic, lol. If she sings about "happy love" then it's probably just that and she believes it, but when love dies it's tragic, poetic, haunting. She can be petty and sarcastic and her lyrics usually have some clever way to say the most mundane things, but usually you don't need to think very deep, unless you want to understand personal easter eggs or "simple" details like for example:
your Midas touch on the Chevy door/november flush and your flannel cure = you opened the car door and gave me your shirt when I was cold
type of thing, sure you can add your own interpretation, however she is usually direct with her intentions (but in a more flourished way), one of the exceptions to this is "Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince" where she talks about politics or My Tears Ricochet where it's more about the behind scenes of her own life and music.

there's actually a lot of psychology research especially more recently published on how trauma received in a relationship can only be healed in a relationship setting so getting over things alone may not be actual full healing. Just thought it might be interesting to hear, saw it at a uni class i took recently 😅

the cab ride in LA: She wasn't in the cab. She is listing coincidences linking them together on his arrival in LA for the premier of the film Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk . The music in the cab ride is her single, Bad Blood, from her AOTY, 1989. She likes this sort of Easter Egg. The Lakes: the Lake District in England is a vacation/tourist spot, and the hideaway of several of the Romantic Poets including Wordsworth in the 19th century; they vacationed there in 2019(?). At the time (2016), she was in an unhappy relationship with Calvin Harris; she rebounded through Tom Hiddleston, then started her relationship with Alwyn in late 2016. Her favorite spot for dinner -- dunno, but she took Ed Sheerhan to In-N-Out Burger, when they collaborated on songs for Red.
The axe to grind: she was often accused of dating celebrities so she could write break up songs about their relationships (her breakup songs chart very high). Critics & gossipy talk shows sometimes pilloried her for keeping grudges, or being petty in her lyrics. Other songs that mention axes are on the reputation album: End Game, and This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things come to mind. All of her relationships after high school were with performing artists, either actors or singers, with the sole exception of Connor Kennedy, who was a college student (and, a Cape Cod Kennedy). Criticism of her dating life started early in her career; she has been in a fishbowl since she was 16. She has referred the commentary in interviews as "slut-shaming."

The ex she is talking about sending baby presents to is Joe Jonas. They dated when they were both really young (she, I know, was 17/18), he left him for another girl, it wasn't an amiable breakup at that time. I mention this not because of the gossip, but because across her songs you can see how her feelings towards him/this event have changed. From frustration (track Forever and Always in her second album Fearless, the breakup had just happened and this is the last-minute song about him that she recorded) and anger then deep sadness (tracks Better Than Revenge and Last Kiss in her third album Speak Now, it came out two years after Fearless and featured songs written during that period) and then being able to move on and looking back at it with appreciation for what it was (track Holy Ground in her fourth album Red which came out two years after Speak Now)
Irl they've hung out multiple times since then and it's all good between her and him and his wife. I think they were at SNL last night to support Taylor while she was the musical guest.

My guess is that Taylor used the wordplay on the lyric 'she said I looked like an American singer'. Probably a waitress in England said something like 'you look like taylor swift' but Taylor purposely changed this to 'American singer' since Singer Corporation is an American manufacturer of sewing machines (a very old one too).
Also, I think it's interesting that in the bridge the string is depicted in a form of different materials (barbed wire, chain, wool, thread of gold) to show how we often need to go through different phases in life and get experienced before finding a love that lasts.

Hey Andrew! I love watching your reaction videos, thank you for making them. If I might offer a suggestion; I really think you should watch Taylor's documentary Miss Americana. You don't necessarily have to do it on the channel, but It's on Netflix and I really think it would help give you some more insight into what kind of a person Taylor is and her motivations. Also would give you some more helpful back story about her and about her career and some of her previous album eras. I think you would enjoy it too, it's a good documentary. Also would love it if you reacted to All Too Well: The Short Film. Its a video she wrote and directed based on and set to the newly released 10 minute version of the song All Too Well. Thanks :)

I think a good way to interpret these songs is to know that they seldom have one meaning. She does acknowledge that this concept of fate is fanciful, but there is nothing objective about the way we think of our relationships and emotions. It’s subjective. So we always romanticize and mythologize our stories even if we choose a gritty realistic version, instead of a rose colored version. Even the concept that we are supposed to heal from relationships on our own is an opinion. Another opinion could be that only in relationships, whether we are successful in them or not, can we work out healthier dynamics and practice who we are in relation to other people. It’s all complicated.

  • @artsyswarley

This one has wayyy too many specific references to her current relationship for it to make much sense out of context I think. Examples: Centennial Park (she grew up in nashville) Bad was the blood of the song in the cab (her boyfriend heard her popular song Bad Blood in the cab that picked him up from the airport the first time he visited LA) lunch down by the lakes (they went and visited the lakes district in england for their anniversary, its also is a reference to the last song on the album) into that dive bar (they met for the first time in a dive bar) my axe to grind for the boys who broke my heart (in a song on her album reputation she says "I bury hatchets but I keep maps of where I put 'em" so she's saying she used to be angry towards her exs) Now I send their babies presents (she sent Joe Jonas a baby gift because the two dated way back in the day but have since put it all behind them and become good friends) Gold was the color of the leaves when I showed you around Centennial Park (gold is the colour that on her Lover album she associates with true love and her current boyfriend Joe) Hell was the journey but it brought me heaven (reference to the horrible time she went through right before meeting Joe) the blues and then purple pink skies (reference to the colours of the Lover album cover which most of the songs are dedicated to her love for Joe). Anyways its a tough one to understand if you don't have alllll to context.

Girls have the privilege of believing in fate, and they can believe that there's a special/perfect suitor out there that will eventually come into your life, since girls are the ones who have the all options and get approached by men. Men can't really think like this since no girls will approach men (unless you're famous), and men have to put in the effort of improving themselves socially, personality, money, status, etc. to get girls otherwise if you just sat there waiting around, you will end up with alone with nobody.
