      Fishing with Nordbye You're so blessed to be able to fish as much as you do. A preacher by the name of William Branham said ”The time you spend fishing is not counted against the end of your life." He said it to help us realize just how important it is to get "recreation" to let pressure off. You should live forever...

      From up north here and can say, nope not a northern thing at all. If I am fishing for fun and not wanting to carry them back, would throw them back. But you know how long one single guy could eat one twenty bluegill that size, LONG DAMN TIME. Though I can't filet for sh**, and our lake where I grew up fishing, we had to many mouths to feed to quickly, to take that much time. I usually scale-um, head off and cavity cleaned out. Then breaded and fried.

    Nothing beats a bluegill for fish eating pleasure...nothing. The slightly sweet meat, the firm texture, the mild flavor that never overpowers, and it's lean...to me, bluegill is the perfect panfish. And those were beautiful specimens you caught. My dad and I would go fish a small pond on his foreman's property in late May/early June after he'd get off work once or twice a week. It was spring fed and deep, if not particularly large. We'd catch maybe 12-15 fish between the two of us in the hour or two we had to fish there before dark, 20 if we were lucky. But they were always lunker bluegill like those. We'd get a couple meals out of the filets off those suckers! Great vid guys!!!

    My very first solo fishing expedition (6 or 7 years old) was with a cane pole, a hook and a bobber in a tiny 'gill pond. Fell in love with fishing and have been at it ever since. Wish there were more good bluegill ponds around but I think they get crowded since very few fish for'em and now they're mostly little 6-8 inchers. As a kid, they were 1-2 pounders!

      An extensive (and very costly) study of walleye spawn in MN showed that although the larger females did spawn more eggs, the hatch rate was much lower. The fact is the 3-5 pound walleyes are far more productive than their 6+ pound sisters. Another issue I have with this comment section is that the big ones are bigger because of genetics or something... they are big because of their habitat. Drop a thousand small bluegills from a hundred different lakes in this one and the survivors will thrive as these have.

    I pulled in a few decently sized bluegill myself. One the biggest I ever caught! Put up a hell of a fight but I reeled him. Later on he became my dinner, so I'm fairly happy.

    I was just scrolling through the comments and I saw a few that said that it was wrong that he kept so many fish. I 100% disagree. Look at it this way. If you can catch your 20, limit of giant gills in less than an hour doesn't it mean there over popolated a bit? I mean he did say he caught two bass but if you can catch all those hills in that amount of time then it's not bad. Plus what if he is in need of the meat. Not everyone has parents that but them McDonald's whenever they ask for it.

      Limits are there for a reason. I do agree with best fish management practices. I will not be keeping any more gills out of this pond until next year.

    • @jessewysong9680
      @jessewysong9680 6 лет назад +1

      it most likely means they were spawning. bluegill are highly aggressive during spawning and therefore quite easy to catch by the HUNDREDS if you know what your doing. you can literally clean them out completely if you keep them all. trust me I've seen it happen.

    Not trying to be the fish police, but if you want to maintain the size structure in that pond, throw the 10+ gills back and keep fish under 10. Good genes in those bull gills that need to be passed on.

      @bradcondon6632 6 лет назад +11

      CZYK Republic You are correct. The really big bulls should be released, specially when spawning. The difference between an 8 and a 10 incher when eating is like 1/2 a forkfull

    • @timjusttim233
      @timjusttim233 6 лет назад +12

      Average lifespan of bluegill is 5 to 8 yrs with the 10 inch size slot falling into the 7 and 8 year range , by that catch and release those that fall into that range logic your saying just let those fish die off naturally and take the younger healthier fish

    • @bradcondon6632
      @bradcondon6632 6 лет назад +6

      Tim justtim Its not "my logic", Its what the fish biologists say. I've seen compelling studies about it. I dont remember all the details, but when they try to make trophy bluegill water, they put in special regulations, usually a slot limit, and releasing the big males

    When fishing for bluegill and crappie- if using live bait do you try to set the hook after a first bite? or wait until the second? I've been waiting for the 2nd and wonder if i'm missing fish. I figured if it was live bait, that jig/wax worm could be in it's mouth while i'm waiting on the 2nd bite? Idk..and do you just raise the pole to set the hook? Thanks in advance.

      Ultralight doesn't mean a short rod. I like a longer 7'6'' or 8' rod for light line, the longer rod acts as a better shock absorber for 2 and 4lb test line and cast 1/32 and 1/16 oz. jigs better.

      Actually there are a LOT of reasons to keep them. I've seen first hand what happens to them when they over populate. It stunts their growth and the start to starve. Pulling 20-30 blue gills out of that pond won't hurt anything.

      I agree 100 percent, take a few to eat however in a lake that small keeping all the spawners will leave nothing to seed the lake in the future. You dont have reach alimit to have plenty fillits for the table. And please dont let them sit in the cooler and go bad as i have seen some so called fisherman do.
