Does anyone hear "Danny Boy" being played around 5:01 over the melody? The harmony is beautiful! To me it sounds like a beautiful theme of commiseration between the Irish and Scottish at the end, through their similar histories of hardship and suffering. Bravo for this, Ticheli. It's simply beautiful.
@@garlic_bread_toast4403 i played this in my senior year in highschool. it's very subtle, but its also in 2nd trumpets. I had to drop to 2nd chair for that part bc the freshmen and sophmores couldn't figure it out for some reason.
Played chimes for this years ago as a freshman in high school and I've been looking for a recording this arrangement ever since... goosebumps every time. Just beautiful.
Its not the notes that make this peice difficult. Its expressing the emotion. Anyone can learn to play something like this technically but only a few can find the correct emotions. Excelent job.
I got to play this WITH Frank Techeli :) i played the horn part and cried through the entier last part of the peice, i still do when i hear this peice. Music will save the world, one amazing peice like this at a time.
I love this version! I played this at Honor Band my sophomore year, but I didn't realize it was by Frank Ticheli! His Loch Lomond is by far my favorite arrangement I've ever heard, especially when he includes Danny Boy in the final movement, I guess you could say it is... Both of them my favorite songs; put them together and you get magnificence.
Played this arrangement at Mid South Honor Band here in Arkansas and it's absolutely one of the best arragngements of this song. I was honored to be part of the beautiful clarinet choir like part. Thank you, Mr. Ticheli for such a beautiful piece.
I love playing this song in band. We had a scotsman come into our class today and after listening to us play it, he said we did a great job. I think that if we got a scotsman to say "good job," we did a good job. :]
5:30 onwards. Oh my god. Oh my dear sweet god. I couldn't even keep my cool playing this, it was just so beautiful. Makes my heart melt and my eyes water.
5:30 on...Oh god, goosebumps. I played this in 11th grade, and it's still one of my favorite pieces to have played...nay, to have listened to. Thank you sir.
i played this song a year ago in my high school symphonic band it was quite amazing and i love it so much. the clarinet part, which i played, was so intense... my teacher even told us the story behind the song... it makes me almost cry cause i know it... i
my orhcestra tried a shorter version out in 8th grade. the prettiest thing i've ever heard. we didn't have any bandies around but still, this is one of my favorite things ever.
wow if that was the REAL frank ticheli that commented (is he still alive?) then i feel privileged commenting on the same video as him... he is an absolute legend and he is my idol !!
Playing this in band right now and it is just amazing! Makes me want to cry each time I play it. I find myself moving as I play because I get so into it! Love this piece. Love it love it love it!!!
I LOVE this song! I played first trombone part, and i was so sad to have to give it up when we were done playing it! and i love Frank Tichelli! This particular recording is beautiful!
Haha, I played percussion for this song back when I was in High School. Our woodwinds were not good... but it was still fun:) I miss band so terribly. I became a choir boy instead.
I remember playing this 2 years ago on my freshmen year in the Wind Ensemble, i loved the bassoon part from meausre 28-39, get to play it again this year in the concert band on trombone. 2nd favorite tichelli piece (1st being American Elegy)
This song makes me think of some of the beautiful places I know of in Michigan. Mainly though, it makes me think of the Irish Hills and Hillsdale. When the sunflowers in bloom and you stand atop the highest point and can look on for miles and miles, that's pretty awesome.
I'm of Irish and Scottish descent on my mother's side. So this song is very important to me. Also, in Band, I'm playing Ticheli's recording of Shenandoah. If anyone knows a good vocal recording of this, I would be ever so grateful for the information, on Shenandoah. Also, to the Jewish people of the world. I apologize for the President's conduct towards your own, and towards the Jews as a whole. I support Israel wholeheartedly.
My UUC church performed this the other week and it was spectacular. I'll download it soon. And I couldn't disagree with you more on Israel. Netanyahu is doing a grave disservice to his country and people.
'Twas there that we parted in yon shady glen, On the steep, steep side o' Ben Lomon', Where in purple hue the Hieland hills we view, An' the moon comin' out in the gloamin'. (Chorus) The wee birdies sing and the wild flow'rs spring, And in sunshine the waters are sleepin'; But the broken heart it kens nae second spring again, Tho' the waefu' may cease frae their greetin'
I love when people come up to me and say why would your band play lyrical music. They're so stupid. Lyrical music is infinitely harder than technical it's not even funny. Like this if you agree.
@naomish1604 haha im a flute too! and i know exactly how you feel! it's so amazing :D (only the saxes are to the left of me and the trumpets are behind me :)
I love this song. :D Our high school band is playing it on tour... ^_^ And I get the piccolo solo. YAY! It's quite annoying to have to swap instruments mid-song, though. I actually had to cut out one of the whole notes on flute so I had enough time to switch and make sure my piccolo was warm [since it was just sitting on my piccolo stand].
thank you so much for posting (: we're playing this song in band..and I'm first horn and this really helped me with phrasing and how my part should sound! the horns in this are great! I just think that at some parts, they could play a LITTLE louder but that's just my opinion.
yes I agree :) Ticheli really likes putting lots of horn into his pieces and this is a perfect example of that. But the horn in this is really nice~would you agree that they should play a little bit louder though? (Since it's such a quiet instrument)
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes, Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomon'. where me and my true love were ever wont to gae On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'. O ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak the low road, An' I'll be in Scotland afore ye; But me and me true love will never meet again On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'.

I love playing this song in band. We had a scotsman come into our class today and after listening to us play it, he said we did a great job. I think that if we got a scotsman to say "good job," we did a good job. :]
I wish I still had my piccolo. I'd play that darn solo over and over again just because it's that awesome. ;_;
5:30 onwards. Oh my god. Oh my dear sweet god. I couldn't even keep my cool playing this, it was just so beautiful. Makes my heart melt and my eyes water.
Playing this is band now. I love it to tears. So bittersweet. It really pulls at my heart strings.
5:30 on...Oh god, goosebumps. I played this in 11th grade, and it's still one of my favorite pieces to have played...nay, to have listened to. Thank you sir.

I played this back when I was in grade 12. I was on second clarinet and it was one of my favourite songs played that year. :)
i played this song a year ago in my high school symphonic band it was quite amazing and i love it so much. the clarinet part, which i played, was so intense... my teacher even told us the story behind the song... it makes me almost cry cause i know it... i

This song gives me the shivers every single time I hear it...

You'll be fine! Good luck playing!

Beautiful song, and beautiful photo, but. . . given that it's a famous Scots song, why a photo of Keem Strand on Achill Island. . . Ireland?
I played 3rd clarinet on this in 6th grade
Didn't your theory teacher teach you never to write parallel perfect intervals, Ticheli?
Alto sax all the way!!!!

By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomon'.

On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'.

An' I'll be in Scotland afore ye;
But me and me true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomon'.
Nice mix of Danny Boy in the end there
Do you need me to put up a link to the MP3?
@kudasango Yes :) ♥
I love how he infused Danny Boy into it.
