I heard from Justin, that if you see that translucent tan/brownish color in an opal (that isn't the ironstone of a boulder opal), it means that the the material is very weak, and WILL crack, 9 times out of 10. So, if there's that caramel colored potch/mineral, it's almost like it hasn't had enough time to strengthen itself under the pressure of the earth, and turn into healthy potch, which creates healthy opal. I hope this helps, because I LOVE your channel so much, and you make me genuinely happy. 😊❤

I too have been purchasing Ethiopian opal and have some stunners.......in stead of grinding the sand off with a wheel.......I use a small needle pick or my thumb nail. Just soak the opal in water and most of the surface sand just comes off in big chunks. That way you remove very little surface opal. Also the best color in Ethiopian opal is the the white surface layer in stead of deep in the rock. You can see this with most but not all specimens. Cheers

This is non-hydrophane type Welo opal. It’s mined wet and will typically craze upon drying out. I display mine in freshwater aquarium to preserve them well. Ethiopia also has great production of gem grade Hydrophane opals that don’t have this crazing (cracking) issue. Great video! Not much documentation is available on this non-hydrophane type opal. Put the opals in methanol and rinse them after some time with fresh methanol to flush out all the water. Repeat multiple times if necessary. Finish up with placing the Opal in slow curing and low viscosity epoxy. Maybe a vacuum chamber or a pressure pot or a combination of both might help.

I just use an epoxy that is low viscosity on its own. I’m not sure, but I fear that the epoxy itself might crack while the thinner evaporates.

I think the opals cracked because of the heat coming from the grinder.
If the opal acts like glass, normally glass cracks when there is a lot of internal stress.
Technically grinding it down you change the shape and outer layer is heated from the traction.
If you can find a way to heat the gem and then slowly cool so it adapts to a new shape it may lower the stress and prevent cracking.
I am not an expert and I don't know if this is right but that's what some other scientific videos have pointed out when making glass, if it cools down too quickly it will crack after some time.
I know this is an old video but I would love to be in a giveaway

Put it in a vacuum chamber not to high off a vacuum just slightly expand the cracks or holes. It will pull the epoxy resin into the opalthen when you release the vacuum it will shrink back to the normal size closing the cracks and holes

I love all colorful Opals, and I remember paying over $100 for a pair of tiny little black opal's set in gold when I graduated high school. I lost them while attending college planned on replacing them and forgot about it. Now it's impossible to replace them even using my own gold the cost of black opals is so high... Haha I love Paco kittens are so fun.

you probably know by now, since this is an old video, but you are trying to get opal that is supposed to always stay in water, to prevent cracking, to not crack out of water. Its meant to be displayed submerged in water. The etheopian opal that you purchase dry (always check to see how long they have been curing for, as some sellers do not let them cure for months like they are supposed to) will not crack if you chose the piece well, and slowly worked it to avoid large temperature changes. (also check the temp of your water you are using, too cold and it can crack while grinding/polishing, too hot and it wont keep the heat down in the sections you are working and the heat differential will crack the opal.) also work the stone a little bit on all sides if you can, so you keep the temperature relatively consistent across the piece.
Also...don't leave sand pits in an opal you just worked with water, the sand will act as a pick/wedge, and cause a fissure from that point.

I severed my ACL & meniscus about a month ago in a dumb accident, and since then haven't been able to do much at all. Now I didn't mind the time off but this also meant I couldn't get around to finding this years Christmas presents. So since the area of Germany I'm in is going into a real strict lockdown, I cant go to my local crystal and jewellery shop to get the supplies for emergency presents.
The man on fire would go towards an absolutely amazing pendant necklace for my deserving and hard working mother.
may the PACO be with you.

@@PulitzerOpal a shame to hear about your wife... If it's only a small tear she should be back up on her feet without much to worry about in less than a month.. apposed to a full rupture you can get through without needing surgery, which is nice.
Germans can be strange like that.. it's taken me a while to get used to them.
