Two years ago when I was taking AP Euro in high school I watched your videos and was a huge fan and contributor. Now, I'm taking second year university European History and I'm watching your content all over again. Great refresher! I missed watching these videos Tom!

Stumbled upon this video after a long and tiring search for a decent video on Charles I. So glad to have found this! Amazingly explained, couldn't have watched anything better.
While you initially explained some good detail, I was disappointed that you missed out the whole reason and history as to why Charles was brought to trial and executed which made it look very one sided! Charles could have easily avoided losing his head and remained King, but having surrendered to the Scottish Covenanters he hoped to exploit divisions and in short starting the the second civil war. Unfortunately for Charles, Cromwell roundly defeated the Scottish army at Preston and other royalist forces throughout the nation, it was at this point that Charles having brought war for a second time had blown it! So it was not a show trial at all, and he was justifiably accused and convicted of treason and subsequently executed!
I have to disagree with part of the characterization of Charles I here. It is true that he had a high conception of the authority of kingship; however, to say that he assumed the throne believing he did not need to consult with parliament, or that he did not wish to do so, is wrong. In fact, on calling his first parliament, it was the traditional prerogatives of the monarchy, not parliament, that came under attack, as he was denied the life-long collection of tonnage and poundage that had been granted to English monarchs since Henry VI. To say that Charles I was no masterly enough to win the political fight with parliament is true, but then it would have taken a brilliant strategist to get the better of a parliament so riven by Puritan fanaticism. During the years of the personal rule, Charles I managed to run the affairs of the kingdom on a shoestring budget, kept England out of foreign wars, and generally left his subjects to do as they would - not the worst government in the world.
also not true after Charles I died. From 1649 to 1653, Parliament ruled alone as the Commonwealth of England. It wasn't until 1653 that the Protectorate existed, with Cromwell as the Lord Protector.
At around 1:50 you say James ruled absolutely. He absolutely did not! He did have a period of extended rule without parliament but without sufficient cash or a standing army he was not an absolutist king. Just a firm believer in divine right and the royal prerogative.
The problem with Charles the first is that he tried to ignore 800 years of English history. Even back in Anglo-Saxon times English kingss ruled by consent. for 300 years before Charles the first it was custom and practice for English kings to ask the people who were going to be taxed whether they could raise higher taxes. that is the commons of England had to vote for extraordinary taxes to be raised for wars or national disasters. Charles the first did away with this practice at a time when parliament was becoming more powerful. He also failed to accommodate The rising wave of protestantism and democracy. After he was defeated in war he still tried to delay giving parliament what it wanted. by trying to induce Irish, French and Scottish armies to invade England he was guilty of treason. As a king he may have got away with this but unfortunately he came up against Oliver Cromwell. As an aside he never won a single war that he tried to fight. He had an unusual mixture of ignorance and arrogance and in my opinion deserve to be executed.
I'm a French student (with Irish roots), and following your program while on lockdown. Your lessons are wonderful and a complementary tool with current history lessons I got from my own teacher. I think your courses shed on a very clear light on ongoing politicial and religious matters back then and have helped me visualize the historical period a whole lot better. Without being biased, I think you're very good at teaching. A Thousand Thank you(s)! Míle fáilte (ie). Loulou J.

What a fantastic presentation! The presenter is great - full of energy and humour :) And a lot of great facts too, of course. Judging by the accent of the presenter I imagine that the American Civil War might be another war of interest to him. Here's a thought for you: could the seeds of the American Civil War have been sown in the English Civil War? Or maybe even longer ago in 1607? A certain sort of person emigrated to Jamestown, Virginia and other places. They tended to be Royalists, slave-owners and Anglicans and they wanted to live in the South. From the 1620s onwards a different sort of person started to emigrate to America. They tended to be Dissenters both politically and religiously and they wanted to live in the North. During the English Civil War the American colonists were mostly pro-King... but that's because most of them lived in the South, which was predominantly Royalist. The North was mostly pro-Parliament. There were some Americans fighting in the English Civil War. They were nearly all from the North. They'd mostly been born in England and had emigrated but were back temporarily for the duration of the fight for Cromwell et al. Then they went home. So perhaps the South was always by instinct that little bit more conservative?
Below is an expanding and (roughly) chronological list of links to European history videos (generally these feature lecturers who summarize material well and deliver it in an engaging way, such as Tom Richey and Paul Sargent, or great animators featuring maps that illustrate the passage of events geographically). The units correspond to those of AP EURO (see link all the way at the end). A few videos on a 'Crown and Church estates' series from Marty Rady (of University College London) are sprinkled in, which feature the importance of Central Europe, an area that is generally not covered sufficiently in most introductory courses. While most of these materials are appropriate for AP Euro students, undergraduates, particularly those who want a refresher before taking more advanced courses, and life-long learners may also benefit from them. These materials compare quite favorably with 'massive open online courses' (MOOCs), and often are better, IMHO. Combined with a reading of some primary sources (many now easily available online in translation) and viewings of art from the eras covered (many great works can be viewed in high-resolution online), one can acquire a fairly good understanding of the last 500 years or so of European history in a relatively short period. Stopped watching as soon as he got Ship Money wrong. It wasn't about trade, it was a type of tax that was explicitly for national emergencies to raise money for ships. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
Just a quick correction. In the Civil War,the term Cavalier actually meant"gallant gentlman".It had nothing to do with horse riding cavalry. But I can see how the mistake was made. Apart from that, I thought it was a good, solid, informative lecture.
What are you saying is great. But i want to notice that you talking without any pause , no stop at all , one breath , too fast , same tempo all the time. That is very bad if you want someone to understand you. From the point of view of today 's "youtube fast food" culture it looks normal but it's not. Thank you.
I just wanted to make a joke/meme, and this is the best that my fifteen year old brain managed to create. it isnt supposed to be historically accurate or anything like that, just a good ol´ meme
I changed the 666 likes to 667! You are an AWESOME teacher, the best I have ever seen, no joke, if only you had been there during my times in high school!
HELLO Tom, this is Estuardo from Guatemala, thank you for these videos, the content and the way you present it is very informative, you can grasp a very good idea about historical issues just by watching your lectures. Thank for sharing your knowledge
Before his execution Charles I believed that Parliament would put his younger son, Prince Henry, on the throne as a puppet king while Charles Prince of Wales was in exile in France. It has never occurred to him that they might abolish monarchy altogether.
Man, thank you so much. I was just scrolling past shitty overdramatised documentaries on repeat just looking for something concise and interesting without all the hollywood, and this was it. Legend
One thing I wanted to point out is that Charles was the second son,who never had much expected of him. He lived in the shadow of his older brother Henry, who downed. I have read that the king and consort looked at him in disappointment after his older brother died. I am sure it played a factor into Charles's 'my way or the highway' mentality.
First time commenting here; I've been watching your videos for a while now and I would just like to take the time to thank you for the great work and the very rich and detailed videos you make, they really help satiate this 18 year old history nerd's thirst for knowledge! god bless you and your family, and salutations from Morocco.
+Mrcrow Productions I appreciate the comment. Really glad to see so many people watching these videos for fun - and especially people overseas. I started making videos mainly for students preparing for tests but as my audience has grown it’s great to see a core of people here who just love learning about history!
"people watching these videos for fun - and especially people overseas" --> Then I must say thank you too, because I'm from Brazil, no need for tests on history anymore, but history is very fun, specially with a teacher like you! You are the best I ever seen! By the way, cockfighting is forbidden here, but still polemical.
Apart from too many "you knows" and obviously no audience, a very good effort. Please, please, no more "you knows"! Kind regards from England. Keep safe and well.
Two years ago when I was taking AP Euro in high school I watched your videos and was a huge fan and contributor. Now, I'm taking second year university European History and I'm watching your content all over again. Great refresher! I missed watching these videos Tom!
You are brilliant mate, Brinigng education to the masses. God bless ya !
My man Tom, I love you. These are by far the best history videos I have ever seen.

History is written by the victor. This propaganda piece does little to present new details or perspectives on Charles I.

This is probably Charles I viewed from American

At some point, I would love to do some more videos on classical history and mythology.
Really useful, I have an english test about these topics so I’m watching your videos. Wish me good luck :P
Also love the heavy music hahaha

"Kangaroo court"
I DIED
Stopped watching as soon as he got Ship Money wrong. It wasn't about trade, it was a type of tax that was explicitly for national emergencies to raise money for ships. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
this guy's charisma with history is contagious . Very good job
Thank you.
Attacking Ireland is a good idea. Cromwell:(ok)
Attac *king* Cromwell: *TRIGGERED*
I just wanted to make a joke/meme, and this is the best that my fifteen year old brain managed to create. it isnt supposed to be historically accurate or anything like that, just a good ol´ meme
kek
Tom is a great lecturer - he really makes it fun and interesting. And, being a Kiwi, i love to hear his accent. Great stuff
From 1953 to 1960 I went to his school, King Charles 1st, founded in 1642.
amazing video!!! thank you so much, everything is super clear and engaging
entertaining but very over simplified and distorted view of History, would not pass the history exam for 16 year olds here
I changed the 666 likes to 667! You are an AWESOME teacher, the best I have ever seen, no joke, if only you had been there during my times in high school!
Im reading pepys journal and this is essential background material , very well spoken and delivered! Thanks a bunch!!!
Such a great video ! It helped me a lot to understand the topic and to improve my knowledge before exams ! Thank you so much !
Dear Tom, your lecture like you live in those days! You earn yourself a new subscriber! Love your videos.
Thank u so much the best ever i wish i have a teacher like u
he sounds like sellacious crum and i like it when he talks
Helping me study for my HY 102 exam later, thank you! So nice and easy to understand
+Brittany Pitts It’s a pleasure to help!
Loved it!
Studying Paradise Lost by Milton. Brilliant video for helping understand the political / religious context at the time
Thank u for the lecture!
Well done ..I am a uk amateur historian ...your well researched...and your presentation style is excellent...thanks for posting
I'm from India
And I'm doing history hons
Your video helps me to Charles related topic short and and long parliament thanks 😊
I like being lame
The way you explain it, you give history life. I kept wishing you would have read me stories at night when I was a kid LOL!
i agree charles wasn't, seemingly, inherently evil. but then he had tyrannical rule, and he DID get what was coming to him.
Bitch this a good video
Thanks for helping me wif ma homewurk
Too papal
sorry i meant good job ,good history teacher u should come to my school and teacher my friends so that can know how good u are of teaching history .

Happy New Year Tom
And a Happy New Year to you!
You miss out so many important details and waffle about silly irrelevant details ffs
Mrs. Tom you are the best. Are you going to do a video on the Greek War of Independence?
Does he talk about the jewish sponsors of the revolution Ben Manasseh Israel and Fernandez Carvajal ( great Jew ) who sponsored Cromwell?
not bad for a bot
Apart from too many "you knows" and obviously no audience, a very good effort. Please, please, no more "you knows"! Kind regards from England. Keep safe and well.
As helpful as this was, his voice is unbearable
Thanks for leaving a comment!
He sounds ok to me and many people annoy me when they speak.
