Great Vid. Getting back into racing and a great update/refresh on rules - thank you for the share. Fluency with rules akes for much better racing. It is surprising about how many skippers are so soft on their understanding of rules, detracts from the fun and can be dangerous, as we know. Edit 37:20 - A rules detail - sailors have to remember the definition of racing, "Racing - A boat is racing from her preparatory signal...," not the starting signal. Proper Course - "...A boat has no proper course before her starting signal. " So, a boat is racing some minutes (usually) before the concept of proper course is activated. The "Proper Course" before the start signal is effectively maneuvering for best position on the start line.
Hi, question for you, in our last race we had a situation where we came on port and an other boat came on starboard. As we had richt of way we called them and indeed they tacked. As they tacked right in front of us we tacked away avoiding his false wind. Then he called we should not have done so and should have waited during 2 boat lengths of travel before tacking away. Is that correct? I could k not find this in the rules.
I've ask a few experienced sailors about " overtaking boat must keep clear " and they're replied, oh that doesn't really apply anymore... Doesn't really, hmmm.. It needs to be clear what each persons understandings are. When a port boat crosses infront of a starboard boat, then tacks infront, in my mind this is an example of overtaking boat must keep clear...
Well done. Super helpful. Much appreciated.
Great video and explanations, thank you.
This was SO helpful, well done. Thank you.

If you were on port how did you have right of way?

Other rules apply such as rule 13, 15, 16. If you’re in the zone, it’s 18.3
