The 7 Kilometer Rivelin Tunnel below Stanage Edge from Ladybower Reservoir
Join me as i embark on a beautiful walk through the Peak District tracing the 124 year old tunnel that travels deep below ground from Ladybower Reservoir through to Rivelin Reservoirs near Sheffield.
There is plenty to be seen as we begin our journey at Heatherdene beside Ladybower. Heading up over the hills and moorland. Can we find any trace of the tunnel abobve ground as we skirt owards Stanage Edge? What History remains?

Coincidentally today I was tracing the route of the gravity-fed Derwent Aquaduct (shown on your first map) which runs from Derwent Dam all the way to Watnall, Notts via Ambergate, Ripley, Langley Mill and Eastwood. It actually runs under my street, Cliff Boulevard in Kimberley. I knew the Derwent dams supplied Notts but never knew exactly how, Lots of stone built valve houses, manhole covers and old infrastructure along the way. That would be a good project for you! If you need any more info I have been researching it. The aquaduct akso has a pipe that goes to Derby and Leicester!
I love these videos Ant. Spent loads of time up the Peaks. Tent, 4 kids, dog, husband, cheap rent in a farmers field. Perfect. I'll never get to explore it all in my lifetime, too vast an expanse. I'll sit at home, in the warm and watch you instead xx
the reservoirs and aqueducts the victorian engineers built for water supply in England are magnificent, a true testament to our once great nation
They really are. Thanks for watching
Once again the production of this video has just blown me away , it could easily be a professional made for TV production, outstanding .
Thanks very much Mick that's very kind 🙂
Thank you for the tour all about the tunnels near the Ladybower Reservoir. Quite an accomplishment back in 1903-1909. Always pleased with your tours, Ant. Your the best, pal. See you on the next, and enjoy the weekend. Cheers mate! 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸
Another fantastic production Ant with brilliant footage and inspiring music. Absolutely loved every minute. Many thanks Ant for sharing.
Thanks very much John very kind
@@TrekkingExploration I'm watching your video now.. You are just making claims and relying on grainy almost could be described as bad photocopy images as some kind of evidence? Here is my latest video concerning these matters if you interested? ruclips.net/video/4kh7HOLaiOg/видео.html
I am a Mansfield fellow, therefore I find your videos fascinating, mostly local, good style of reporting, all good. Thank you. Peace be unto you.
Mansfield lass here! I totally agree with your comment! Ants great!
I was born at King's Mill hospital, brought up in Warsop and went to school in Mansfield Woodhouse and I agree with you both.
@@johnm2012 Peace Brother. I hope all these "new" people coming to our area appreciate how good these local folk are.
Great to see a little more of this puzzle, these videos have to be one of the most comprehensive public explorations of the infrastructure around there.
Very kind and thank you for watching 🙂
Fascinating. Noticable that no shafts were sunk for construction & ventilation. There's an amazing sighting tower above Silsden on the Barden Aquaduct in West Yorkshire next to an air shaft.
i wonder if the circular base at the bottom of one of the sighting towers in the vid was actually a ventilation shaft when the tunnel was constructed .
@@kawasakikev8905 The most obvious indicator of shafts is usually spoil heaps, especially on remote moors. No sign of any here.
There's a water tunnel near Hebden Bridge which has 3 shafts on it with large spoil heaps.
@@alanjewell9550 There is one ventilation shaft near Jarvis Clough, at SK 2134,8611. Interestingly, there are quite a few field boundaries that follow the tunnel exactly parallel. There's a two kilometre wall across White Rake in the middle of nowhere that is exactly aligned with the tunnel. (I can't put my hand on my 1:25k map, so I can't place a ruler along to confirm.)
That's one of the best videos I've watched!
Absolutely brilliant, so much information and fantastic aerial shots. old abandoned buildings dotted around the countryside fascinate me. If only they could speak and tell their story as to why they are there, what purpose they served etc.
Well thank you very much for part three the whole series was fascinating and very interesting. Thank you
Another great & fantastic video of The 7 Kilometer Tunnel below Stanage Edge from Ladybower Reservoir - Rivelin Tunnel!.💛💛💛
Glad you enjoyed it Michael
Lovely walk Ant , love the Peak District it's stunning. Really interesting to see those sighting towers and the spooky cottage! Have you walked The Roaches and Lud's Church?
Nice day out if your wrapped up.
It wasn't a bad day. Stayed dry at least 🙂
Excellent work Ant. These walks/sploors are right up my brain pipe, as M'lady and I often did similar all over Cornwall.
But I started early... Exploring the old railbeds of Pembrokeshire when I was a teen. There's always something about old industrial civil engineering/infrastructure that sends a spooky shiver down one's spine... Speaking of 'Spooky'... That 'Spooky House' was not really spooky to me... I'd give my eye teeth to move in and live there permanently - especially given that I am about to made homeless by heartless redevelopers and our corrupt council [sigh]
What wonderful memories this video has brought back Ant. I sprnt nany times around Ladybower as a child an adult & taking my son on visits, also my late sister use to live near Rivelin & we use to have many walks in Rivelin Valley. We never knew about the tunnel so this has been amazing to watch & learn about the history of the tunnel, Its a beautiful place to spend time & reminisce. Fab video again. ❤😊
Another excellent video, still in the area, start at Malin Bridge waterwheel and follow the river Rivelin up the valley taking in the mill ponds, grinding wheels, culverts and sluices of the old now gone mills from as far back as 1790 when the cutlery industry was in its infancy, this will take you to the Rivelin dam where this video finished.
I've been to looking at maps this week of that area I'll be back later this month I think
Absolutely fascinating. I used to live not far from the Rivelin valley and never knew about the tunnel.
Great video Ant. Many thanks. Nice to know you were thinking of me 'Hetherdene', just like my name 'Dene'. Lol. Take care.
Cheers Dene glad you enjoyed it. I'll see you soon :)
Loved that thanks Ant. The reservoir was fantastic. What beautiful countryside. Thanks for taking me along. Please take care
Glad you enjoyed it Linda :)
Ant delivers yet again 👏👏
Great video, blend of drone and pictures, maps and music 👍
….but above all pieces all that history and mystery, together.
Already looking forward to the next one.
A real eye opener. I have lived locally all my life and never knew about this. Excellent video.
Thanks very much Phillip. Very kind
This show is startlingly beautiful.
Thanks very much Joseph 🙂🙂
Many thanks Ant, there's so much history right on our doorstep. I've always liked a bit of exploring thank you for giving me the motivation to get out there and do some more.
Glad you are enjoying them and getting out too :)
A great video, very well researched and filmed, thank you very much! We take the supply of water at our taps for granted, it’s so interesting to see all the work that goes in to collecting the water and then delivering it to our homes.
Thanks very much Peter. Its a very important asset that few know about
Very god Drone footage as per usual Ant!!! Very Lovely views - but please DON'T get lost!!! 🙂🚂🚂🚂
Also Ant - If you like doing Vids about Reservoirs, then you may want to do a Vid about the Linacre Reservoirs - Find out what 'Q Holes' are!!! Here is my take about it & I show & tell you a lot about it :- ruclips.net/video/5aLnHc8e3bU/видео.html Thanks in advance
Luckily i had the sighting towers to help on this occasion :)
Epic landscape... The spooky house could be repaired and used as a moorland cafe for walkers...
Sighting towers could have had a 20 or 30 foot pole on top, marked on the drawing if you look closely is Shaft 2 and Shaft 1 at approx. 3rd distance points
beautiful photography whilst unlocking long lost secrets of the peaks, well done Ant, I think you should make a 'floating drone' if it had a bit of power you could probably explore and photograph many previously unseen tunnels and caves. Anyway thanks for the film and all your unique ways of bringing your walks to life
Excellent video, music and drone footage. Meriden, Kansas
Glad you enjoyed it thankyou :)
Thanks 👍 what a lovely walk 🚶♂️
Really enjoyed that. There's a couple of other tunnels in that area. One from the Snake Pass to the Derwent Dam and a really long aquaduct from Ladybower to Ambergate that follows the Derwent Valley.
Glad you enjoyed it. I had better get looking at maps :)
Stunning...
Thanks for watching
This was enthralling Ant. What a fabulous explore. Loved every second. Well done. Music very apt, thank you.
Thanks very much Shirley very kind
This reminded me of a week i spent on an outward bounds course in the early 80s based at Alport Castles Farm. Back then it was a Derbyshire Police outward bounds facility and we went from a big local firm who had an arrangement with them. Think the farm is private now. We climbed at Stanage edge but ive not been back since, maybe I should.
The water on the film is so orange, obviously dyed with the peat from Kinder and the like.
I wonder if the "white brick" might have been glazed bricks, maybe so the could check water clarity?
The fact that idiots would not only take a bar b que into the peak but put it on a wooden bench shows the stupid mentality of some people.
Great video as always and thank for stirring up some memories 😀 za
Champion, Ant! Very informative as usual and a pleasure to watch the landscape along your journey. Please keep 'em coming. Cheers from South Wales.
Brilliant
Thanks Stuart
Wow
Great, loved the drone footage. Glad you found the map useful, I did read that the tunnel was inspected by boat and the brickwork lining was in excellent condition for a gravity fed supply.
Another great video well done again
Thanks very much Brian
I imagine the Spooky House would be spooky at night.
I love these videos. It brings back happy memories of when i used to sample the reservoirs and inlets nearly 25 years ago
Glad you are enjoying them and thank you 🙂🙂
Very interesting thankyou
Thanks very much John
Your research into all things historic,is second to none.By far superior to watching the crap on the television, very much a learning curve, and the music is great to.Keep up the great work,I look forward to the next episodes, whatever that may be.
Terrific music again. Great video brings back more youthfull memories for me.

Well deserved cuppa Ant
Thanks very much Phil that's very kind 🙂🙂
Thanks for such a interesting video do love enthusiasm you give to your videos 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Dave and thank you
I think I've come across that 4th tower a few years ago without knowing what it was. Stunning scenery, I've never really walked around the peak district landscape that much.
One of the two aqueduct pipes that run from Derwent reservoir feeds the riverlin tunnel. It’s all done by gravity and the water isn’t pumped up from the ladybower below. Fantastic video yet again, keep them coming.
That's a great video and really interesting. I think I read that this tunnel was fairly unique as it had no air shafts which your video well proves.
Glad you enjoyed it Richard thank you
I always knew about the riverlin/ladybower tunnel glad you made this video ,it's so deep below ground you would not think it was level from ladybower to rivelin,
I sent you those black and white pictures you showed.
Its amazing what's down below and out of site, it's so old too yet still doing it's job. Thank you for watching 🙂🙂
Loving these tunnel vids 🙂
Love your videos Ant, they're always so interesting! Xx
Thanks very much Leanne x❤️
Fascinating video, keep up the excellent work
Thanks very much Gary
Love your videos. Lots of great ideas for places to visit
Thanks Deb so pleased you are enjoying them
Another great watch and explore, Ant. Thanks for giving your time and effort and for sharing too.
Thanks so very much Elaine :)
Another top notch video, Ant. Thank you! 👏🏼😃
Thanks very much Frank
Great video Ant, always fascinated with waterworks infrastructure despite having a bit of a phobia of the plugholes and tunnels, don't know what that's all about. I'm curious about what the building on the moor was used for with it's two fireplaces, It doesn't give away any clues as to what went on there.
LOVELY. CHEERS
Thanks for watching
what a wild weird and wonderful part of south yorkshire
Thanks for watching Chris
Excellent video and commentary, Ant! 👏
Thank you very much Rachel very kind

Wonderful informative video Ant. Thank you.

Truly stunning,
Breathtsking views,
Fascinsting info and history,
Beautifuly filmed, and expertly presented.
One of the best of these types of films ive ever seen.
Thank you so much for bringing this to us.
Thanks so very much Bob That's very kind of you 🙂
Another very enjoyable video. Crazy to think that they built a tunnel that length just to move water. Must say as well, I love your choice of music to go with the vid. Made for a enjoyable 30 mins. that flew by. All the best.
Thanks very much Tim very kind
Omg I love your videos
Thanks very much June you are very kind
It's possible some of these ornate huts you come across are hydraulic ram sheds, have a look next time and if there are inlets and outlets, that's probably what it is. There's one near me looks almost identical, only it's also marked on the old maps as hydraulic ram. (let me know if you'd be interested in photos/location etc)
Thankyou amazing as always, great footage i am sure you will still find more to explore .maybe slippery stones and Derwent Halls grand stone entrance pillars at entering into Bamford from the Lady bower side. looking for ward to your future travels soon.
Another great video, and journey to explore. 😊
Thank you very much Shona
Once again another informative video showing something that many of never knew existed...

@@TrekkingExploration just finishing the video off now. At the spooky house bit. My friend posted a video of that a week ago on his mtb channel. I’m from Rotherham and have done climbing since the 90s. I often go hiking round Langsett reservoir which has some decent history to look into plus the iconic cut gate path used to cut through the middle of the reservoir
@@keyrone77 that spooky house needs a summer sleep over too
@@TrekkingExploration would be nice if it was done up like the house built into the rocks at the roaches
Also daledike reservoir may have some link up tunnels from lady bower and there’s an interesting tall building up on the hill from there which will also have some history to it
That was excellent mate. Well done.
Thanks Mark that's very kind ☺️
@@TrekkingExploration I always thought the pump house at Ladybower was something to do with the trout farm but obviously it’s not. Great film.
Another brilliant video - you do some good Pro' looking and enthusiastic work... I have always had an interest in that particular tunnel as youngsters we spent a lot of time around Wyming brook and the Rivelin outlet,. a fascinating piece of tunnelling.
Thanks very much. I'll certainly be back in the area :)
another great vid Ant ,i've only recently found your chanel but it's brilliant , nice background music ,none of that modern drum beat stuff , great drone footage and fascinating history . thanks for taking the time to make these fascinating posts
That shelter next to the collapsed sight tower looks a little bit like a ww2 Observer Corps post
Ant, if you can't walk through the tunnel, how about a kayak ?? lol Your drone work is fantastic, what a beautiful countryside. Funny how people turn on the water tap without thinking "How did the water get here?" Another great watch of UK history.
Thanks very much Mike. This area just keeps on giving
@@TrekkingExploration Just like the "Jelly of the month club" keeps on giving all year long.... lol

Nice video Ant, I must have a walk up there some time before I get too old, just love places like that. Well done with the work you have done making this video. Chris
Thanks Chris. I'm enjoying getting out and about round here
Great video as always really enjoy watching your adventures 👍 just wondering if u had ever visited the reservoir and ruins of errwood hall in the goyt valley Derbyshire
Thumb's up ant 👍
Thanks for watching 🙂
@@TrekkingExploration can I show you some places when you are about in sheringham Norfolk ww2 bunkers under ground
Hi Ant, Great little video, so 7 Kil tunnel and no air shafts dug ? I just wonder if the sighting marker might have been one then caped off, I don't understand why they call it a spoky house? Looks like a great fixer-upper. LOL Thanks again for a great explorer,
Hi great video. That is a great area for industrial history. You could go down the Rivilin valley and see all the old water mills all the way to Malin Bridge, you could go over to the Loxley Valley and see the sites of the Great Sheffield Flood all the way down to Kelham Island (where steel for the Brooklyn Bridge came from) or go back to the Ladybower Dams area to do the Dambusters history.
Thanks very much. I'll be back in the area for sure very soon
👍
Thanks for watching
Great video Ant. When you said there was a circular arrangement at the base of that tower is it possible that there was a bored air shaft to the tunnel ? It would be a long tunnel with not much air when they were building it . Obviously if shafts did go down they would need marking
Wish some authority would keep those remote structures maintained. Just an annual check would stop them falling into disrepair.
£15K is about £1,818,770 today apparently Ant.
I think I might just have that lying around 😂
excellent video👍 it looks a very remote place did you meet any other walkers on your way 🤔
It's funny I think I saw 2 people. I go super early in the day usually though
Now if there was a bus stop on the road by rivelin dam back to ladybower it would be perfect.just got my bus pass.
Great piece of exploration with stunning views. Are there any details about the electric railway, which sounds rather hazardous? Thank you.
I've hardly found anything on the railway. But it must have been a risky operation
Local folk law says that on sunset on two days of the year the light (not the image) of the setting sun is seen at the Rivelin Portal. The area next to Redmires reservoir which you passed through was used for training in WW1 and the trench system of 'Hill 60' was constructed. Some where between the Stanage Edge marker and the 4th marker a large gas pipe runs south to north from the West end of Ringinglow road and can be seen on iphone maps set to satellite view. A second runs south to north just below the lower Rivelin reservoir wall but above the new covered reservoir.
Very very good .Iv been at the top sighting tower and now know we're to look for the entrance.last year I went to find the rivelin exit.it was obscured by bushes.they should clear it and put a board up to recognise this achievement.could we do it today.under budget.
Were the towers perhaps shafts as well ?
Excellent video. I can't get my had around what use the sighting towers were? If they had shafts down to the tunnel I can get that the route could be checked, but there were no shafts. Can somebody explain, or point me to a reference to read more please.
... A comment on here suggested that the towers may be capped off shafts ?,, or that tall masts were added in order to see the towers .. I guess that historical planning info' might be available in some library,. I'd like to learn more too.
Absolutely brilliant mate and also very interesting
But I’m sure when they dug this tunnel not a single kilometre was mentioned
Miles feet and inches please 👍👍🤔😍😂
Thanks Bri. I did say both miles kilometers in this one 👍

I didn’t release there was so much history in the surrounding hills
And obviously wouldn’t of known without these great vids👍👍👍😍
@@blw896 I didn't either 🙂 I'll keep researching
I bet people have been out walking and seen those towers and wondered what they were, don't you?
I bet they have. Maybe just thought they were way markers or something.
