  • Hello!!!
First I apologize for the eco from the table on the video. I hope this is the last video that will be filled that way.
Michelle here from the Creative Cove thanks for joining me today. Today’s tutorial is just a fun video using stamps. Designing and creating your own papers. Making ready to use ephemera and getting your hands dirty with a little paint. It’ nothing new it’s been done before but this is my take on it.
I really like creating these little images that looks almost like an x-ray there a bit on the grungy side so they’re not for everyone but I feel like they add just a little extra something interesting to a journal. Let me know what you think.
I hope you enjoy the video. I hope it gives you some inspiration to get your hands dirty, and have fun with what you have on hand, thinking outside the box when it comes to creating with tools that you have in your repertoire.
    Happy Creating!

I’ve watched literally hundreds & possibly thousands of Gelli printing videos & quite a number of those where the printed pages are smaller than the gel plate, yet you’re literally the first I’ve seen actually use paper to create a frame using the excess around the smaller piece 😱 So simple, yet so intelligent & practical 🤦‍♀️ Can’t believe no one else has ever done that deliberately lol.

I'm binge watching you today, dear Michele!😂 I have been an avid gelli plate artist for a decade now. When you lay the paint down with the brayer, instead of rubbing hard and pressing hard, with a back and forth motion, try a lighter approach. Instead, lay the paint down without pressing hard, rolling in one direction, and then picking up the Brayer at the end of the plate. Do this quick motion again and again... this will deposit the paint lightly onto your gelli plate with an even coat. Hope that makes sense?🤔

I love making gel prints with lots and lots of layers. I found myself an old glass cutting board and I stick a piece of paper (the same size as the pages I’m using for my prints) to the underside of the glass. This does two things 1) the glass anchors the plate so it doesn’t slide around but also makes it portable if I need to move it while there is wet paint on it 2) it shows me where the borders of my page will be and then I don’t roll out too much paint, which I love because I’m cheap and it saves a bit of money

I use a glass cutting board too, old glass placemats work well too. Great for using a part of as an easy clean paint palette as well, particularly if you’re sponging on some paint.

This was great. Thanks for all the great ideas. Two suggestions - I keep a container of water under my work table when I am using paint on stamps or stencils and drop them in as I create this keeps the paint from drying and helps with fast clean up. Second for those glossy labels give them a coat of clear gesso and they will take your paint. If I didn't have clear I would try white on one sheet to see if It works. If you need a recipe for homemade white gesso let me know. Peg from Two Old Crows had one on one of her videos. I made it and it is great and cheap to make. TFS. 🥰🙏

I love your thriftiness! I see labels at thrift shop, but had not thought to buy them for use in projects like this. Thanks for the idea!
    A few thoughts:
    1. If you place a rubbery craft mat under your Gelli plate it won’t slide around when you’re trying to roll out paint or pull prints. I love this method!
    2. I enjoy hearing your thoughts about what you’re doing and why, but the banging is really tough to endure. Could you cover your table with something to lessen the banging sound? I’m not trying to be critical, just giving honest feedback.
    3. It looks like you’re using felt applicators to apply the ink, which results in a less smooth application (like when the green ink went on heavily). The foam applicators work really well for applying ink and might be worth trying.
Thanks again for sharing your techniques - I enjoyed watching!

I lay my gel plates on a large piece of glass that I use as a palette the rest of the time. Putting it on heavy glass means it doesn’t move when you are trying to rub down the paper and take a pull. It’s also essential if you want to do multiple layers where you need to line up the previous pull with the next one.

How do you get your hands clean? Lol. I never find any labels at thrift store but will look at the dollar store. Using labels something I haven't tried before . I'd like to see how these get used on a journal page now. This was a great gelli plate lesson and I feel like I need to experiment more now.
