I used to have a 1500 Vulcan. Was a 4 speed, and you could slow down for 25-35mph turns, crack the throttle and it would pick immediately back up in 4th gear. Less gear changing. Was a good bike.

I started out on an 88 Honda VT1100c and that thing only had 4 gears. I was all pumped and excited when I bought my next bike a 98 ace tourer that had 5 gears. The older bike got the better fuel economy by about 4 mph. Constant 44 vs 40mpg. I would if thought the more gears would of actually been a benefit all the way around but now I'm thinking maybe less is more. You still get to shift just not as often. And the 88 sounded like a Harley with straight pipes. Amazing.

Thanks for the review, it helped me make my decision when I came across a 2000 vulcan 1500 with only 8,000 miles on it. I put about 4,000 on it and only had it 9 months. Runs like a dream and being in the pacific north west we have I am very fortunate.

Keep up on oil changes..... these motors have little screens 2per head (I think 2) they can clog easily... there's a reusable screen on left side of oil pan make sure it stays clan too it feeds the oil pump. I bought a used motor that had a disintegrated clutch.... all those clutch chunks clogged the oil pump screen untill the screen cage collapsed, allowing clutch fibers and chunks thru the pump, up to the little head screens clogging those. That stopped flow to the lifters causing a very loud tapping noise. I deleted the little screens up top, replaced lifters. If your clutch blows up or starts slipping.... completely drain the oil, filter, and lower pump screen. Flush with acetone or gas, Replace the clutch, add new oil/ filter, drive 200 miles, change oil. I got a 50% refund on that motor but learned the lesson I just wrote. And if you buy a used motor.... look for a picture or request 1 of the oil pump screen. I bought an 11k mile motor that was basically shot. It's still running strong after top end overhaul, but the scoring caused by debris will be throughout the system. So save a headache, keep up on clutches and oil. 👍

My first bike was VN700. Nice little cruiser, several years later I upped my game to a 2001 VN1500 Classic. I still own and ride it today. You could not pry it from my cold dead hands. This review touched on all high points, but one thing I love about the bike comfort of the stock seat and position. I have back issues and this bike allows me to sit in the comfortable position for long trips. The bike sits low enough for good control (I'm 5'11"- 260lbs) and high enough for comfort. Best bike I've owned or ridden.💪💪💪

Just bought 1999 1500cc Great bike. like he says it handles and sounds great. sold my 2006 Harley Road king. 1500 cc That bike .Well i was not impressed with Harley. That bike was heavy as hell hard to back up. Bulky and also hard to stop with the wait i went threw alot of pads. always passing my friends by as riding down a mountain. Because i had no brakes.. they would heat up quick on the mountains we have here. i have had Yamaha, Suzuki Honda, Kawasaki a lot of them. been riding since before 1973.. they all are good bikes either way. Not what you ride. main thing is you riding .. Be safe keep riding

I truly appreciate this review! I'm looking at an '03 Mean Streak and it's not the engine size that surprised me (I'm moving from a 900 up to the 1500) but the lightness of the bike! Lighter than a Harley, and better value than the Victories I've looked at. Thanks for the review!! SUBBED!!

That bike, is it shaft driven? That's a great price for such a great bike. The Vulcan is a real nice bike! When I was searching to get me a bike, I looked at the Vulcan and was considered the Vulcan 1500 knowing they are awesome bikes and the price of them to me is lower then they should be worth. I'm a huge fan of bikes and pretty much like them all.

went from riding a 650 Kawa KLR to an 2006 Vulcan 1500. Bought the bike last Fall (2019) rode 3x before having to put away for the winter. Had it out several times this spring (way back in march) Just love the bike... although it was quite the change from my KLR. best thing of the Vulcan... it only had 8500 kms on it! Previous owner must have driven it on a few sunday afternoons. Looking forward to driving the bike a lot more than that.

When i first got my licence, I was so exited to get my first bike that I completetely disregarded my size and what bike would fit me. I found an old guy selling his VN1500 for an amazing price and pretty much bought it within 30 minutes of seeing it. Considering I am 5'8" and 140lbs, the almost 900lbs bike was a lot to handle in the first few months. My thought process was "If I can learn to handle a massive bike, I could handle anything!" Which turned out to be true. Of course I was very careful when moving slowly as I was terrified of dropping it and not being able to pick it back up. When practicing slow manuevers in an emply parking, I dropped the bike for the first time. Heart was pounding but to my surprise, the massive foot pads (pedals? placements?) held the bike up withouth letting it drop completely.
From what I have learned riding a bike almost 7x my weight as a complete noob, take the time to learn how it handles in slow and tight places to avoid looking like an idiot trying to make a U-turn (which happened slowing 2 lanes of traffic).
After the first year, I can say that I am completely confident on the bike and though it might be a challege to learn on for someone my size, its completely doable with care and self awareness. If you are over 6' and weight more than 180lbs though, this bike would be absolutely perfect.

lol dropped mine too, im about 150 pounds and was able to pick it up, and same the foot pedals held it up even though i was in a little bit of a steep. Very impressive, it’s my second bike and of course i have some trouble handling it in stops or parked but nothing that can’t be learned:)

    • @nja3224

I kind of disregarded a few things myself. I enrolled in MSF school and before I started, I saw and fell in love with a 2002 1500 Vulcan Classic. The was just a few weeks ago. I bought it, my son picked it up for me and rode it home I took the 2 day basic rider course and got my DMV road test waiver this past weekend. I went to DMV the other day to register the bike and get my M endorsement. I am %100 legit. I’m taking it out tomorrow for the first time, going to ride with my son and I’m excited but petrified too. I dropped a Yamaha 250 twice practicing U Turns. The Vulcan is a beast. It’s also gorgeous, I do not want to drop this one. I am 5’11, 225 lbs. I can plant my feet firmly on the ground. The bike weighs 650 lbs, give or take a few but it feels well balanced. Hearing that you and someone else dropped the bike but the floor boards helped minimize the damage gives me some relief…damaging the bike by dropping it during slow maneuvers and stalling out are my biggest fears. I only had those 2 days riding experience, maybe 12 hours total time, even less ringing time. I did good on the other drills, but those damn I-turns give me grief. I don’t plan on doing any of that right away until I get a little bit used to this bike, then I’m going to spend a lot of time mastering it and practicing other drills. I’m 61 years old though, a little late getting started but better late than never. Happy riding to all who are reading this and stay safe. Far too many distracted drivers out there.

find the stickiest tires you can get for the 1500 and plan on swerving rather than braking. these 1500's dont like to stop quick. learned that the hard way. almost lost half my leg. crash bars saved me. ended up with a sprained knee. i really miss that bike but i dont think ill ever buy anything again with inner tube tires. not very sticky to me.

I'm considering buying 2000 Vulcan vn1500 fuel injected. The V&H pipes are so loud, that whole city shakes. This is the only thing that worries me.
The bike is nimble, fast needs steady, strong hand, especially on brakes. Good bye one finger stopping ;)

I know an old man who's got a '96 model. A stunning bike with a wine red/yellowish white two-tone paintjob, two-seater with a small sissy bar and luggage racks. He described it "Just like a Harley Road King, but doesn't leak anything and better cooling and overall quality." Only thing he doesn't like is the clutch because of some washer-spring thing that wears out every three summers or so but replacing it only takes like twenty minutes. He's had the bike for fifteen years so i suppose he knows what he's talking about.

Join the club Jim I used to be a Matchless/BSA/Triumph biker some 35+ years ago all i'll say the modern bikes virtual ride themselves compared to the old oil droppers.
ABS, disks, didn't you just love those old 4 leading shoe sports brakes? great at 70 +mph stop you super quick or almost throw you over the bars at 40 mph unless it was raining then they just locked up and dumped you on the deck, vicious as hell.
Better handling ,Big softer compound tyres and of course vastly more reliable.
Everything the old thumpers didn't have .
Its a bit like comparing the old Ford Pop to a modern hatchback both have 4 wheels but that's where the similarity more or less ends.
No doubt about it they are super machines in comparison to most oldies

I have had a few cruisers. My 1999 Nomad is one of my favorites to ride. It's not a light bike weighing in at over 700lbs but it also rides like a 800. My only real problem is gas. She loves it.
Looking at her compared to a hog she is pretty much the same except for weight and she weighs less than a hog buy several hundred. The thing I like best is the price. Harleys are three times the price and for the money not that special at least for me.
If you are thinking about buying a entry level cruiser this is w good choice. You don't have to be ann advanced rider to ride this bike. Just be watchful of the breaks as your on a cruiser and not a sport bike

Worst mistake I ever made was buying this bike. I was not an experienced rider at the time but had gotten cocky from riding a 600cc sport bike frequently and wanted to get a cruiser. Got talked into this and went down on it , not once but twice. The first time I got death wobbles , the second time I was going into first and it was so powerful for me to handle the torque had me goose the throttle while trying to brake and i crashed into a car. Although probably rookie mistakes the bike was not smooth at all either . Never felt comfortable on the highway and if I ever hit a small bump I would feel like I was going to get ejected from the bike. This time around I’m trying to be practical and look for an 07 and above 900
