I then got my 2cd oldest lens out of their frames and followed your steps. All in All took me about 1.5 hours. Saved me a Lot of $$$$. Thanks Brother
I brought mine to an optical store. One said they couldn't do it and another wanted well over $100 for NON-prescription. I'm pretty sure this will work for me. Thanks. Gonna give it a try.

I had done this many time for years to save my favorite frames and save money, because the lense get damage. Didn't make a video about it. Use to do it with a dremel tool. Sander and sand paper is a very good idea too. If you have a big lense it will make a lot of dust. Recommend using a jewelry saw to cut the shape than sand to refine shape. I've found fishing sunglasses have high quality inexpensive polarized lense for replacement. Get them from Walmart or sporting good store.
I'm a lady who likes to try to do everything myself. I get tired of getting overcharged for everything. I especially like to do my own car repairs of at least teach myself exactly what repair I need so I don't get fleeced. I may not have the right stuff to do this but I sure appreciate your diy spirit! I'm glad you liked the video. Yes, Scotch tape can work and look good after it's trimmed and we're assuming these are not frameless glasses but resin (plastic) frames like in this video. Press two 3-inch strips of tape across each end of each frame opening (four strips total) with the adhesive side toward the frame. You may only need one strip per lens depending on how small the lenses were cut. You want adhesive side toward the frame so the lenses will slide over the back of the tape when snapping into the frame. The lenses should now be light but you will now have eight 1.5-inch tape strips hanging from your glasses (four strips from each lens). Using a razor to trim off the excess tape will allow you to cut the tape as close to the lens as possible. I hope that helps.

Very nice video. Question: those are glass lenses? I got a pair of ray ban glass lenses, and I would like to fit them in other frames but they say ray ban glasses are difficult to fit beacuase of the hardened glass and it gets broken.
Almost all lenses I've fit are a polymer of some sort. Crystal lenses will take much longer with the sander. So, in that case, I will use a small hand held grinder or rotary sander with all else the same. I hope that helps.
Cool video, I was just thinking of doing this as I found some nice non-Rx frames and I was going to use donor lenses from some broken glasses. Do lenses sometimes come out from the back side of the frames? And do you make the 45 degree angle differently if this is so? Should the angle go away or towards the side you put them in from?
The friction lenses in the video (and most that I have seen) are tapered from BOTH sides and typically snapped in from the front. Sometimes it is necessary to lightly warm up the frame to insert the lenses.

TheIdeolocator: I'm glad the video helped. I've had people comment here that they've done this by hand. It will just take longer. I would prefer not to, but I suppose I could see doing it on a polymer lens. For glass or crystal lenses, it would seem less likely. If I absolutely had to do it by hand, I would be sure to choose a donor lens that is close in size but slightly larger than the frame I'm trying to fit them into to reduce cutting. I would then lay the 9x11 Sandpaper flat and draw the lens back and forth across the Sandpaper. You would need to brush out the debris occasionally to keep the Sandpaper cutting well. In choosing a sandpaper, the examples in the video description are a good start. Just be sure to choose a good quality or "Pro" grade sandpaper that is rated for wet or dry use. That should last the longest and give you the best results. Thanks for the question and for sharing, and best wishes on your project.
This is normal. The edge of a lens is usually tapered to better fit into the receiving groove of the frame. The lenses that I pulled out of the PRADAs were quite thick because they were prescription. Even though I am replacing them with non-prescription (non-refractory) lenses that are thinner, the groove in the frame would still be too narrow for the full thickness of the new lens. So, it is typical for lens cutters to taper the edge for a better fit into the groove of the frame. Notice at 2:32 when I bring the original prescription lens up close to clearly illustrate the beveled edge on the lens. This is common to many lenses. So at 3:50, I clearly show how I am holding the lens at an angle on the sander to repeat the same tapered edge for a better fit into the frame. I hope this helps.

I have a question. I brought reading glasses to the optical place where they had my prescription glass ready. They said they can’t use the reading glasses because it’s cheap plastic and will break when they try to heat the frame. Is that correct or am I getting scammed?
Rada Chapkis: Thank you for the question. So you paid the shop for a pair of prescription lenses that you want to have cut to fit your reading glass frames? If so, they are telling the truth in that they cannot verify the quality of frames that they are not familiar with. Some frames might crack and they might not. If they cut your lenses to fit those frames and the frames do crack, then you likely can not use those lenses. If they supply the frames and the frames crack, then they must provide another pair of frames. For this video, I do not recommend using this method for cutting prescription lenses. Thank you again for the question and for sharing.
It depends on the type of plastic your frame is made out of, and if it is really old. Some material can’t have heat used on it because it will actually shrink and warp it. Also if your frame is old and/or corroded it would be best not to reuse them, taking the old lenses out could potentially cause them to break. That being said, if they are new or in good shape then it shouldn’t be too hard to size the lenses just right so they can cold mount them (pop them into the frame without heat) like what was done in the video here. I should add that some readers that you get at Walmart or other stores, have the lenses glued into the frame, and they can’t always be popped out of the frame without heat, or without breaking the lenses, both of which could potentially damage the frame.

You can delicately wipe the edges with the acetone to get rid of the white stuff left after grinding
