Ramblin' Rides with Amber: Episode 17

- A new year is upon us and I’m loving the sound of 2024 already. We were treated with a very mild December here in Alberta and I did not take it for granted. I have heard those around me complaining about these 2 weeks of very cold temperatures we are experiencing, and I just keep thinking how thankful I am to live in a place where we get to appreciate all the seasons.
I was not quite in that mindset on Friday, however. Shawn and I woke up to frozen pipes and no water. That means no water for the animals as well. We spent the better part of the day trying to thaw the pipes, as well as continually filling the animal troughs with a hose from the barn. We are so fortunate to have a headed barn. I remember the first winter we were living here, we had a cold snap, and I was trying to thaw water hoses in our very tiny bathroom to get water to the horses and cows. It was not ideal, but those who look after large animals know that it is not for the faint of heart. Our toasty fire kept our cabin at a livable temperature over the weekend- but even it had a hard time keeping up. It’s not often we both have to go to bed in our wool long underwear and sweaters, waking up every few hours to add logs to the fire just to stay relatively warm!
It might not sound like much fun, but I wouldn’t trade this life. It is these cold spells that make us appreciate the heat, and the hot summer droughts that make us appreciate the snow. I do wish our summers were longer, as winter always drags on far too long in Alberta - especially when caring for farm animals, but those warmer months are so welcomed when they do finally roll around.
Since it is January and the 1st month of our calendar… I wanted to take a moment to comment on how proud I am that my husband Shawn and I have been doing our “Amber Marshall Calendar” together for 13 years! When I first met Shawn, he was a photographer for the Toronto Argonauts, Woodbine Racetrack, and the Ontario RAM Rodeo Series. He started taking publicity shots for me, and he commented that it was cute I always seemed to have an animal in my photos. I remember mentioning (as somewhat of a joke), it would be fun to do a 12-month calendar with a different one of my animals for each month, and not long after that comment we began putting together our 2011 Calendar. Shawn has stepped away from photography in his everyday life, but we have maintained the calendar photoshoots over the years and always enjoy that time together. For those of you how have some of my calendars, they are almost like a yearbook in time of the different critters we have been lucky to share our home with.
Shawn does not like to be in front of the camera, but I was able to get him to take part in this newest Rambling Rides to see his side of the calendar journey.

You look amazing in the photos your husband has captured. He really is talented. As for freezing water, I lived in Edmonton for most of my life until I married someone from Newfoundland. I was not used to water freezing till I moved here, now it's a common thing each winter. So I know how you and your animals feel.

My wife and I live in Virginia. We have horses and cattle, and a spoiled blue heeler. We love watching Heartland. We are not big tv watchers, but we are hooked on the series. You both look great. Keep up the good work. Would love to visit Canada one day. Hopefully before we kick the bucket.

Thank you for sharing your life with us. Here in Illinous we are experiencing -40 temps, with the wind chill. We don’t like it; I cant imagine that being our high, everyday! I love listening to these Ramblin Rides. You think even -20° is normal for you in the winter time and here in Tennessee we have been in the single digits. We have been shut in for several days because most of the driveways haven't been able to thaw out. I can't imagine that being normal😂
I’m a native Tennessean, so when Amber mentioned -40°, I shuddered! Our worst this winter was -15°, and guarding against frozen pipes in the house and yard became a full time job!😂🥶
I recently got thrown from a horse and broke my pelvis, I’ve been watching heartland throughout this healing process and I hope it helps with the trauma from that experience. I have seen heartland many times and every time I always have a smile on my face. I’ve always wanted to be a good rider but I struggle with confidence, hopefully after I heal up and get back around horses I can work on that. ❤

My favorite chocolate bar is also Score. My second choice is Heath. Thanks for sharing your photos and weather with us. I grew up on a ranch and still hang out there with my family whenever I get the opportunity. We have forty to fifty deer that dive into our hay supply. Wildlife is wonderful to look at but they do damage to shelter belts and horse and cattle feed. Enjoy the rest of Winter weather.Thsnks again for sharing.

Thank you for sharing. Hi Shawn nice to meet you. You are a great photographer. When we got down to 17 degrees in southern AZ, That was too cold for me. I still love that feeder you have for the large bales of hay you have.
I got one of the first calendars because I loved the photos (I have done photography as a hobby all through college and now into my 30's) and I had no idea it was your husband who took them. That is so sweet and I think he captured you in those moments beautifully. I actually spoke to you years ago on Facebook (I was in vet school and we have miniature horses that look like twins lol....I have a black mini mare named Ellie and we spoke briefly about our minis). I had no idea you guys were still doing the calendar, if one releases this year, I may just have to get another :-). Tell your hubby he should be super proud of those pictures, he did an excellent job.

Was pretty darn cold, that's for sure. I'm up here in Edmonton. But we sure got spoiled as we really haven't had winter until this cold snap came in.
