    That animatronic suit is up there with Chucky from the first Child's play. Absolutely beautiful!! Animatronics need to be brought back into the mainstream of the film industry!!

  • @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern
    @InstilledPhearCostumeCavern 9 лет назад +10

    I'm not familiar with Mortal Kombat, but this costume absolutely blows my mind. The movement of those animatronic arms is more realistic than I thought possible! And to think that this was done in '95... Holy cow.

  • @FartSmucker
    @FartSmucker 8 лет назад +160

    Better than movies nower days, ya know why? Because its physical and its real and its actually there interacting with the actors and took time to do. When you see CGI....your brain knows its fake and you only compare it to other CGI or how real it might look. Meanwhile animatronic and puppet work is at least real and provides a real function looking robotic or not at least its actually there and actually in play with whats going on.

    • @pikppa
      @pikppa 8 лет назад +6

      Animatronics and puppets are fake just as much as CGI. They are not reals, they have never been. If you're saying that they don't you are kidding yourself.

    • @DjAether8
      @DjAether8 8 лет назад +13

      +pikppa Im sure by real he meant that its physically there to interact. If you dont know the difference between that and CGI, then you must be kidding yourself

    • @pikppa
      @pikppa 8 лет назад +3

      DjEzhel88 I know the difference perfectly. Animatronics can't walk, animatronics can't make more than few expressions, animatronics can't jump, animatronics cannot act at all like a real being, only like the robots they are. A CGI creature have no movement-limit, can make all the expressions he/she wants, it can run/jump/fight without being replaced by a toy who move in slow-motion, it act like a real creature. If you're saying that in a movie you can't spot the difference between an animatronic and a real actor then you are fooling yourself.
      Special effects are not reals. They have never been. The best special effect is the one that give the best possibility to the movie: animatronics are far too limited in comparison to CGI. That's why they have been replaced. They are obsoletes now. Like stop-motion.
      Technology will always go on and evolve dispaite all the people who will claim "back in my days it was all better before this new hellish technology". Perhaps CGI itself will be replaced someday by the invention of real olograms. Only time will tell

    • @FansUnleashed_
      @FansUnleashed_ 8 лет назад +1

      +pikppa animatronic plus cgi is what they should do (hollywood)

    • @pikppa
      @pikppa 8 лет назад

      Cj Hogan Animatronics are goods only to give the actors something to interact with on the sets. A part from that, there is nothing an animatronic can do that CGI can't do better and without making the creature look like a robot. So why bother making them if you can use CGI?

  • @Gakusangi

      Gakusangi I agree and that's why after seein the new teaser star wars trailer, i can't fuckin wait. J.J. Abrams is the man, from what I hear just about every scene in the movie has practical effects

      @Gakusangi 9 лет назад +5

      OneButton Dash
      I can understand where some CG will be kinda necessary, but as long as it doesn't look too artificial and isn't WAY over-used, it's something I can forgive. I was so happy to find out the little droid is a REAL thing that they rolled out on stage for everyone to see, we're so prepared to hate on the effects that we're seeing the CG when it isn't there anymore, good to help reassure us like that.

    0:30 wow, look at that sculpture they made, it looks alive, yet also like a Greek statue, it's art, and that's the START of the process, it blows me away. Then just a few years later we got The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King in the shiniest CGI they could muster that didn't even look like the actor 'playing' him.

To this day I still love this stuff

    Today a lot of people bash this movie, and indeed the film has stupid things like the the fight with Liu and Sub Zero or how Cage defeated Goro... but overall was a solid action film with great soundtrack, nice FX , good pace and some amazing fighting scenes. So I have really good memories from this flick.

      I think you mean they bash the sequel. This movie obviously had a lot of time and hard work put into it. The sequel, in the eyes of the majority, seemed very rushed. Personally, I like both of them, but the first one was just awesome.

    • @72Oswald
      @72Oswald 8 лет назад +6

      and about the sub zero and goro fights, they actually seem to flow well into each other, given that both liu and johnny seem to turn sub zero and goro's offense against them and thus showing that even the most powerful have a weak point that, if exploited, can lead to their downfall and that solutions can be simpler in contrast to we make them out to be (johnny lures goro to a cliff, where he can fight on his own terms and liu simply uses water to apprehend sub zero's potentially fatal attack.)

    I'm actually surprised. With the amount of movement in the upper arms, I had thought they had someone sitting on the other persons shoulders (albeit cramped as fuck). That's why I thought he didn't move that well cause they were trying to be careful not to loose balance. I guess not being able to see explains that pretty well tho.

    My main problem with CGI is that they have yet gotten it right.... In all of the movies and video games I see, the players look plastic... the skin texture isn't there. They all look like animated toy figures.

    • @cfin8550
      @cfin8550 10 лет назад +4

      Well said Johnnie! The main problem I think with CGI is that for some faster movements of action, yes...a little CGI can be utilized, but not for every shot like most Hollywood directors insist. Ever since the original Jurassic Park debuted, everyone thinks CGI is the way to do the entire film and characters. Yes, there were some parts that did look fake, but the overall look wasn't bad. Hardest think about getting the CGI element correct is the natural lighting. Very hard to capture! Now for Mortal Kombat, I think this will be the best live action representation of Goro because they decided not to use CGI for him. Just the storyline killed the film but one thing that I've seen is that the regular fanbase of these franchises are coming up with more interesting storylines than Hollywood would ever produce with with a very small budget!

    • @MMambl
      @MMambl 10 лет назад

      I think your right with that, I just wanted to say that CGI can be very nice in movies. I totally agree with the problem that very often the CGI work is not good because of the cost, but isn`t it the same with other ways to make effects, like the one shown in the video?

    • @Gerald5000
      @Gerald5000 10 лет назад +1

      Yeah, it's not CGI's fault. It's that film makers that don't know how to use it. It works great for synthetic materials, or anything man made like buildings and what not, but for anything living, it's a struggle. Paul, the alien, worked pretty amazingly as a CGI creature but generally, the whole 'Uncanny Valley' thing is a problem and it's abused. The way flesh, hair, and nature works and reacts, can't be fully simulated with Ones and Zeros.

    That's the answer and the reason why movies suck these days. Common people believe that CGI is the evolution of the process, that we are lucky to live in a period where CGI makes everything possible. That's false. Also if modern CGI is powerful enough to produce realistic effects like fire, smoke, electric shock waves, transition effects, backgrounds, planets from scratch, exploding buildings or videogames with amazing quality, it still sucks in making "movie quality" characters with particulars like blood, hairs, eyes, facial expression and so on. Can we replace the actors with CGI? We can't. Same way, can we replace real matter or the animatronics? The answer is still negative. So, what is CGI in a movie? Most of the time, low cost crap. Don't misunderstand me, I love CGI, but nowadays everything is made with it and we are losing quality to abuse with quantity.

      I have to agree. I'm more into the practical effects in movies than CGI. I guess that in nowadays the budget in films cost less to do CGI than something like this video. I'm alright with CGI when it's done right and what it's meant to do. For instant, Pacific Rim, the CGI is absolute brilliant. I think the Rise of the Planet of the Apes CG on the apes are amazing. Just like practical effects, CG are either brilliant or horrible.

    • @thedeadlive
      @thedeadlive 10 лет назад +2

      I think that quite a few movies would still suck even if they used decent practical effects. They would have one less strike against them, but it's only one part of the production. That being said, I am all for incorporating more practical effects into movies.

      I know that you said that you love cgi, but Andy Serkis is a good example of a cgi character with quality comming from the actor. Although it isn't just him making the emotions himself with alot of computer designers adding too it, but that would be the same with none cgi actors where it isn't just the actor when you have the make-up people and the director telling the actor how to feel.

    i dont see everyones problem with CGI, i think whatever visual effect will look better should be used, whether it is animatronic or CGI, aslong as it looks good why should it matter?
    just look at the Na'Vi in Avatar, their hair flows, their skin has pours, they sweat,
    CGI done right can be incredible, CGI done wrong can be aweful, but the same goes for animatronics :)

      it depends of how good or bad the creator is. Look at practical effects for the 50s or 60s movies. It all matters on how the creators decide to make it. Best is when practical and CGI work together like Jurassic Park

      For an 8 year old like I was at the time this came out, it wasn't awful as I actually enjoyed it. At the time, whenever kids would watch something live action, it makes references to power rangers in terms with the choreography which I think this picked up quite well.
      Of course, watching the retelling of the 2009 Mortal Kombat video game was pretty awesome as well as Shaolin Monks.
