Three words - Damn Good Book! Raymond Parks was the bank for Big Bill France. Without the briefcases of money sent to him from Atlanta, there wouldn't be a NASCAR. My wife gave me this book for Christmas 2006 and it is full of great information! I grew up down the street from Mr Parks' Hemphill Service Station, and knew some of these guys. My dad would only let Red Vogt touch his cars! Mr Parks was a very successful businessman. The liquor store is on Northside Dr in my old neighborhood. I knew Mr Shirley too. Great people. He autographed my book for me and i cherish that along with Smokey Yunick's thumbprint. Thanks for doing this one, and if you haven't yet, GO BUY THIS BOOK!!!
Mr. Ramond Parks was literally "The Bank" for early NASCAR (the sanctioning body) and quietly continued in that capacity for more decades than anyone would believe.
It's a shame that more folks didn't share their stories before they passed. Great story. Thanks for writing it.
