Diff'rent Strokes is an American sitcom that aired on NBC from November 3, 1978, to May 4, 1985, and on ABC from September 27, 1985, to March 7, 1986. The series stars Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges as Arnold and Willis Jackson, two African American boys from Harlem who are taken in by a rich white Park Avenue businessman and widower named Phillip Drummond (Conrad Bain) and his daughter Kimberly (Dana Plato), for whom their deceased mother previously worked. During the first season and first half of the second season, Charlotte Rae also starred as the Drummonds' housekeeper, Mrs. Garrett (who ultimately spun off into her own successful show, The Facts of Life).
The series made stars out of child actors Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges, and Dana Plato and became known for the "very special episodes" in which serious issues such as racism, illegal drug use, and child sexual abuse were dramatically explored.
The lives of these stars were later plagued by legal troubles and drug addiction. In 1994, Coleman appeared in an episode of Married... with Children, playing a building code inspector whom Al Bundy called to report an illegal driveway. When Kelly recognizes him, he denies any connection to Arnold Jackson, but utters his catchphrase to Al, "What'chu talkin' about, Bundy?". Also, in 1996, Coleman and Bain reprised their roles for the series finale of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air entitled "I, Done Part 2". In their scene, they reference Willis by name before meeting Will Smith's character, leading to Coleman uttering a variation of his catchphrase, "What'chu talkin' about, Willis?".
Following the cancellation of Diff'rent Strokes, Gary Coleman, Todd Bridges, and Dana Plato encountered difficulty in obtaining acting jobs. All three experienced various legal problems while Bridges and Plato also struggled with drug addictions, all of which were documented in the press. The press and fans of the series blamed the cast's personal problems and faltering careers on what was eventually dubbed the "curse of Diff'rent Strokes" by various tabloids.
You know, it's crazy how Todd Bridges is the only cast member of this great show "Diff'rent Strokes" living now. I think this show is a forever Classic that will live on way past 2021!!!
Mary Jo Catlett is also alive
Wow, Dana Plato, Conrad Bane, Charlotte Raye, Dixie Carter and Gary Coleman are all gone.
Mary Jo Catlett and Danny Cooksey are both alive.
Rip
@@darkchocolate3913 Todd Bridges is the only one who is still alive today
I agree 👍💯
Two black boys adopted by a white rich guy, this show was way ahead of its time....
Dudley was the reason for the shows success!!! :)
@@LiveINtheGood53 actually Arnold, it's like you're saying that Ricky on Silver's Spoon made the show but it was really Alfonso
The show itself reflected the Post Civil Rights Act era.
@CStarz that's the opposite of white supremacy. White supremacy is about creating only one culture not accepting different ones, which is what the term DIFFERENT STROKES means. Are you just trolling?
@CStarz the saying came before the show. Interesting take on it.
Just imagine how Todd Bridges
feels knowing he's the only one left
Danny Cooksey is still very much alive. So is Shavar Ross, who played Dudley.
There's an article in the Hollywood Reporter where he talks about that August 7 2018. They quote him saying 'I'm the last one left'
Yes since he had a major drug problem,

@RUclips Man OOOOO, my bad. She was one of Norman Lear's favorite players, having appeared in other Norman Lear productions, such as 'All in the Family', without which, there would be no 'Diff'rent Strokes'

Right
I loved this show as a kid. I still do! R. I. P. To all the cast members that passed away😞

these lyrics are deeper than you may think.
I repeat them daily. Yes, I'm corny, but it's amazing how few people recognize my words as coming from these lyrics...younger people especially have no clue.

This is the theme song we all need right now!
I remember these shows like yesterday long live the 70s and 80s programs!!!
Yeah that was a good time period.
especially the 80s with all the great music and with the rise and popularity of professional wrestling
I´m 39, this was awesome and this song... a lot of memories...
When asked if the cast was cursed Todd Bridges said something along the lines of if something terrible happens to Conrad Bain then somethings up.
Conrad Bain lived a long fruitful life.
OMFG I USED TO WATCH THIS WHEN I WAS LITTLE. SO NOSTALGIC. THIS SHOW HAS SUCH A GOOD MEANING ASWELL, NOW I UNDERSTAND
Best tv theme song in history!

To my Foster dad Mike Lowery I dedicate this to you thank you for raising me right this was my life for 3 half years
I really missed the good old days where by we rush home to catch drama like these, Happy days, charlie's angels and so on
Along with "The Cosby Show", we watched this all the time! Living in North West London in the early 1980's, I was already in a multicultural society, so none of this seemed strange and I think what appealed about bothy shows was the terrific comedy and humour in them. Regardless of how things have changed (For better or worse), these shows are still quite easy to watch.
I grew up in Tottenham N15 , different world back then , just having a nostalgia trip.
I never bothered about the racial aspect growing up in the early 1980s, it went over my head..
“A man is born, he’s a man of means”
Now, the world don't move to the beat of just one drum
What might be right for you, may not be right for some
A man is born, he's a man of means
Then along come two, they got nothing but their jeans
But they got, Diff'rent Strokes
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world
Everybody's got a special kind of story
Everybody finds a way to shine
It don't matter that you got not alot
So what
They'll have theirs, and you'll have yours, and I'll have mine
And together we'll be fine....
Because it takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world
Yes it does
It takes, Diff'rent Strokes to move the world
is it 'jeans' or 'genes'?
I think it's genes, myself because it could mean all they have is their heritage.
BUT
You could be right.
Nothing but the jeans... I think it’s a play on the word genes. Both were brothers.
Love this positive and inspiring theme song, always have always will.
It's definitely "genes"

@Stephen Siegel Me and you both!

This was 1978 ,, theeme
The theme tune lyrics went completely over my head as a kid... as did the 'Good Times' theme tune. I loved this show, Gary Coleman was hilarious as Arnold, such a shame he passed away young. Tragedy followed Dana Plato too, life went really wrong for her and sadly led to an early death.(accidental OD or suicide depending on which report you read) & as far as I'm aware, following the passing of Charlotte Rae, Todd Bridges is now the only surviving regular cast member. Arnolds "What'chu talkin bout Willis?" catchphrase was a big fave of us 80's kids though.
We're all got varying in fun and lesson learning "strokes" but love these classic situations and theme song. Stay safe everyone!
80s and 90s were the best. I know it sounds overly nostalgic but it's so true
Jimmy JAM nothing overly nostalgic about that statement it’s true
One of the greatest television shows of all time. I loved it. Never missed an episode. You can tell that when the show moved from NBC to ABC and Charlotte Rae left the show, that the show was on its last legs. But, still a classic. We lost pretty much everyone who starred on the show. May they all rest in peace. Conrad Bain, Dana Plato, Gary Coleman, Charlotte Rae, and Dixie Carter.
Actually the show had some of its highest ratings even after Charlotte Rae left in the middle of the 2nd season. But you are correct in that the show wasn't the same by the time of its move to ABC.
After Charlotte Rae left in the middle of the second season, she went on to star in the ever-popular spin-off (and one of the greatest sitcoms of the 1980’s, not to mention one of NBC’s greatest of the 1980’s) The Facts of Life along with Kim Fields, Mindy Cohn, Nancy McKeon and former mouseketeer Lisa Whelchel.
Really sad that everyone aside from Todd Bridges is gone, its great Todd's still with us though, may Alan, Dana, Gary, Charlotte, & Conrad all R.I.P.
Yes - what happened to Dana and Gary especially. Dana killed herself after an interview with Howard Stern. She was ridiculed for doing soft core porn on the show and it really destroyed her ego. Gary's parents stole all of his money. The assholes. He ended up having to work as a security guard. Then he died of a seizure.
Please take me back to my childhood of the late 70s early 80s!
We can’t go back. Time marches on but the memories remain.
Loved this show as a kid. It had me rolling with laughter.
Man why can't we have TV shows like this today? 2021
Sadly a lot of the Cast, Writers & Directors etc are no longer with us, R.I.P. to all of them!.
Thank you Alan Thicke... this immediately takes me back to the early 80’s . For all of us 80’s kids.....This is important.
A different world, thinking of Dana Plato RIP

It really depends on the show. There are so many shows that are hollow and just plain ordinary. A good theme song is appreciated when it carries the values of that show, else it is just another song.

There's something so creepy about rewatching Diff'rent Strokes today. Knowing how awful everyone's life turned out and that 80% of the cast has passed on.
Only two of them had bad lives the rest of them died happy and Arnold was still happy in the end
It's true life crazy

in the 70's and 80's, every great sitcom had a great theme song. those days are gone. now its shitty reality tv with no theme music to speak of
You re so right
Alan Lloyd yup tv sucks now. I live in the past lol
Correct... and it extends into mainstream radio. Why retailers play music from 30-40 years ago. Nothing worth playing today.
Well, the sitcoms they do have don't have theme songs. I don't remember one since the 90's. And the only one I can remember that lasted into the 00's is Friends. I can sing most of the 80's sitcom themes plus The Live Boat's theme song. But this was my favorite sitcom from the late 70-80's. It is my first "love" of sitcoms, I was born in '75. The 90's-80's were so sad seeing all the kids just start losing in life in different ways. The most surprising things from it all is one, Conrad Bain out lived Gary and Dana & two, that Todd Bridges outlived them all considering his life 25 years ago or so when he was hooked on drugs and such. He will be 55 this year. Keep on keeping on Todd!
I wish we only had theme songs to worry about, the writing for family shows is ridiculously stupid. Everything has to have an agenda, the sitcom era is long gone, the last good sitcom was Friends.
Gosh i missed this show when i was 17 year old
