Very cool Video. Do you think the background noise is coming from the recorder or the camera pre-amp? Starting at 7:20 it does seem pretty noisy.
check out this video. it explains it well: ruclips.net/video/frah8eBvUbU/видео.html&ab_channel=JulianKrause
Greetings kind gentleman. Would you be so kind as to let me know if it is possible to transfer files to iPad Pro directly from Sony using a USB to USB c adapter?
Also, if it is not too much trouble how is the handling noise if one had to record while holding in hand? Finally, have you noticed many firmware updates as I don’t use laptops? Thanks for your time! 😅
Hi, unfortunately i do not own an iPad so i cannot confirm that for you. Hopefully other people can chime in for you. You can record holding in hand, however any movement will be picked up by the mic. There are different built-in filter cut modes that can reduce some background noise. When i need to record handheld, i connect my recorder to a shock mount, then use a tabletop tripod as a handle to hold the recorder. This works well
is there inbuilt speakers?
If I'm going to get the Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder to document life, record walking tour, RUclips product review with me at front and also back of the camcorder and also want to try to make music with record singing and instruments too, should I get Sennheiser MKE 440 or I should just get Sony A10 which has on-board mic and is a recorder too and should I get a seperate mic for singing and instruments, any recommendations? Does the quality of these mics on them different a lot you think? is 32 bits necessary?
Sounds like one hell of a noise floor the boosted. Did you have the gain too low when recording some sounds?
Yes, some parts i had gain correctly set, then some purposely set too low so you can see what type of noise to expect
Looks very sleek and sounds nice. There is definitely prominent noise when recording quieter sounds. Easily removable but not ideal
So the static noise in the second half of this video is only present because you didn't set it up properly when recording and then had to boost it later? I'm a new guy to the audio scene and am trying to decide between the H1n and the Sony but several reviews have had the same static sound for both models.
Yes, that is correct. Sometimes when u are recording in a dynamic environment in manual audio level mode, u cant always keep audio levels in the perfect range all the time and will need to underexpose audio so u are not clipping, but then boost audio in post and clean up the noise. An example could be recording something that has random loud banging noises or etc in the background
*What is better LPCM 44.1KHZ/16BIT or better MP3 192KBPS? 🤔🤔🤔*
It's no contest...LPCM all the way.
Thank you for this review. I noticed the wire connected to the recorder, Is that directly connected to your camera?
Yes it is, i used it as an audio input
@@TofuShop that mean it can connect to camera and work like a may be a shot gun mic substitute ?
@@richardtan9163 not meant to replace a shotgun mic. But i mention in video at 2:00 this can be used as XY, ORT, AB mic settings. I guess AB setting would be closest to being a shotgun mic, PCM-A10 will not isolate background noises as well
Does it look like there is any way to crack the case open and change the battery once that time comes in a couple of years?
Did not see an access point to open it. But if you use a pry tool on the edge, it should pop open
LOL troy... truly, if you are using a $220 recorder so often and extensively that you may have to replace the darn thing after 2-3 yrs, then it's arguably paid for itself? Moreover, why not just plug in your external usb bank too ???
@@donko3674 unfortunately rechargeable batteries don't last that long in electronics and throwing away a $200+ item because of a batteries seems silly, and not a sustainable environmental proposition. If the battery replacement is posable then this recorder would work for me. If not it's a hard pass. But without looking over the recorder to see if there are screw holes and how the battery is attached there is no way to know.
@@Troy_Sent_A_Message OK, I accept the point about electronic devices in general not being environmentally sustainable in that regard that absolutely way too much electronic stuff is tossed out for the most part when it breaks prematurely.
But I'm pretty sure you could get at least 3 yrs of sufficient use from such a rechargeable audio recorder which is not using a ton of juice like a phone e.g... My LED bike light which I use at least 5 days per week is 3 yrs old and going strong!
However, I think the solution would be if there's a way to creatively power the said recorder with an external power bank ??
Interesting that you deliberately recorded the audio at different levels so you would have to boost in post. Nice vid.
I want to record drum covers. Do you recommend this one? I have an am7 mic condenser for cell phone. Can i plugging in the pcm and better the sound?
This would be a good option because you can set the XY mic direction to record the whole room for a more full sound. However, it will be tricky because the music from the drums will be coming in from different areas and angles. It will help a lot if your room is padded to isolate noise and remove reverb/echo. Otherwise it will not be a clean sound
@@TofuShop yesss. The room is all padded
Great review.
Sir i have a question. Can you tell me please, which model of sony recorder is best for capture college lectures and long distance clear recording?
Unfortunately, there are not many tools that can clearly do long distance recording. A microphone needs to be very close to the source of audio (around 1 ft or closer, ideally). You could turn up the gain on the mic and try to record some of the audio from a lecture at a distance, but you will pick up mostly ambient and surrounding noise if u are far from the speaker
I am not sure what product you can use
@@TofuShop Thank you.
HI, Can it be used as usb mic for streaming, zoom calling ...via connecting usb cable ?
PCM-A10 is a good recorder!
I've used it for ASMR!
Love mine!
is there inbuilt speakers pcm-a10
@@SawanTech Yes, It has a speaker on it's left side. The speaker is low quality... So I recommend using earphones.
Question: When recording audio straight to camera, do you pause the audio recording (on the recorder) or press the record button fully?
When i have the recorder plugged directly into the camera as an audio input, i set the recorder to 'Rehearsal Mode.' This mode allows you to choose the audio level that you want and will act like a live microphone directly into the camera. I do not have the recorder running in parallel
What you prefer: Sony pcm a10 or tascam d40x?
I have tried other tascam models and i am not a fan of their menu system or ui. I prefer the sony
sir i have a question.can you tell me please, which recorder is best for capture college lectures and long distance clear recording?
Nothing is very good at long distance recording. But the benefit of a recorder like this is that you can place it near the lecturer, and use the Bluetooth app to start the recording and adjust volume levels.
How does this compare to the Sony UX570? What additional features are you getting with the A10?
i am not sure. i have not used or compared the two
DISCLAIMER: I do NOT own either of these recorders. I simply looked at the spec sheet on Sony to compare them
The A10 gets better microphones, higher quality recording rates, more internal storage, and more control of your audio
Hello my friend. As a drone pilot I like to add sound effects or ambient sounds to my videos. But I'm not always find what I need. Do you think the Sony is good for recording ambient sounds? Also what other accessories do I need for this recorder?
This is a great option for you because you can choose different mic directions to record ambient sounds in nature. I recommend getting a Movo SMM5-B external recorder shock mount (15$ on amz) for the recorder before connecting this to a tripod or etc mount so you do not pickup any bumping or movement sounds. This is a popular setup used for ASMR
@@TofuShop Thank you very much!
@@TofuShop I have a problem. I can't find to buy the Sony PCM-A10. What do you suggest between Zoom and Tascam and wich model?
@@ZisimosZizos depends on your preference. I like the menu system on Zoom more
May I know the brand of you tripod mount?
Manfrotto PIXI table top tripod 👍🏻
How sturdy is the body? When you handle or shake it do you hear any loose components?
Just checked and do not hear anything loose. Feels solid and sturdy
Please make a video for internal setting of this voice recorder.
Good idea. When i have time, i will make a video
@@TofuShop Thank you so much sir....
Do you use the PCM-A10 headphone output to connect to the camera ?
Yes, i used pcm-a10 headphone out as the microphone input to camera
Great review. May I know what software you used to boost audio.
Thank you! I edited using Da Vinci Resolve
@@TofuShop thanks
I like your video and test review, I like your Sony PCM A-10, I like the coffee too of course with sugar, Indonesian like that's sweet.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed
Hi mate, where did you buy this recorder? Thanks
Got it from b&h. It may be discontinued now based on some comments posted below
I have a comment. Does that red light ever stop flashing. Is there an option to turn off the flashing from the record button. Also do you think this recorder is good for lectures at school like in a lecture hall.
It will flash while you are recording. No, this is not good for lecture halls. The mic needs to be close to the subject (ideally 1 or 2 ft max range)
@@TofuShop Just wondering, this is a little off topic, but do you know of an audio recorder that you would recommend for a lecture hall at a college.
Thank you for your informative video by the way.
@@laurenceprice1810 hm, i would try using the recorder app on your smartphone. Try sitting near a speaker or near the front of the lecture hall
@@TofuShop Thank you for the advice
@@laurenceprice1810 no problem and good luck. Let me know what you end up using and what works well for you
I'm thinking of buying this for recording nature sounds. Do I need something extra for it? Thanks
There are two accessories I would definitely pick up:
1- dead cat windscreen to block wind noises
2- shock-mount with handle or tripod mount
@@TofuShop Thank You!
@@TofuShop I've seen that you connected it to the A7R. I'm thinking of using it as an external microphone for my sonya6400. Just to be safe, it can record directly in camera, right? :D. I would like to just mount it on my camera and use it like this
Yes, it will work. Just need a cable to connect it to the microphone input
@@TofuShop Thanks! I'll figure out what cable when I make the purchase! Thank you again!
how's the pre-amp noise? if i buy if off of AMAZON JP can i change the system language?
Sorry, i am not sure about language for other country versions of the mic
Nice video. Do you know if there is a way to perfectly synch audio recorded with this device to video recorded on a camera if the Sony PCM A10 is not connected to the camera when recording ? Thanks.
A popular way to sync in post is called a 'clap sync' where you clap while the camera and recorder are recording, then use the spike in volume match up and sync in your editing program
@@TofuShop thank you. is there a more precise way that you know of ?
I think the only other option is to use a Rode Video Go or similar wireless transmitter to record to the camera. Not sure if maybe someone else in the comments has recommendations?
Yes, 90deg plug fits. Mine is also 90deg
Can I know what software do you use to boost the recorded sound?
I use Da Vinci Resolve (free)
@@TofuShop thanks. I just bought it. Maybe im wrong in the recording process where it sounds distorted.
No problem. If audio is distorted, u have the mic volume set too high. Ideally, levels should peak at -12 at the loudest part of your recording so you are not clipping/distorting
@@TofuShop I will try to use the Music Scene next time.
It also a quite disappointment when the monitor out jack cant be use into smartphone.
Did you purchase correct 3.5mm cable? Smartphone is TRRS and will have 3 rings on the input jack
Thanks for the review!
how much better is it compared to your rode video?
This mic is much more sensitive and can pick up very subtle sounds. Great for asmr
Did you ever end up finding a good deadcat windscreen for this?
I havent done any outdoor recording with it yet, so i havent bought one. However, if you google 'pcm-a10 dead cat,' there are a few universal ones available at b&h or amazon
thx for the test. I find the sound quite noisy though in the video, f. ex around 6 min and after
Yes, i boosted the db so you can hear an example in scenarios where u do not have perfect audio levels
@@TofuShop what exactly did you boost? Because it seems the noise gets louder, but not the recording
@@heiner_kruse recording boosted in post using da vinci resolve. Volume was recorded underexposed
Why is there so many noise?
I recorded audio at different levels and boosted them in post so you could hear the type of noise you would get depending how far you boosted the db. This is mentioned and highlighted throughout the test shown with subtitles in the second half of video.
@@TofuShop I noticed that, but didn't understand clearly. It turns out if I'll normalize track in a DAW to 0 dB then I'll can't hear any noise?
@@alexeyyy it's because i purposely recorded audio under-exposed. if you record properly at around -12db, you will not have to boost audio in post, then you will get a clean sound

at 4:50 during the silent parts there seems to be a lot of hissing? bad pre-amp?
Explained in other comments. There are times when you will not have perfect scenario to record audio and you need to choose to under or over expose audio, then adjust in post. I recorded in diff scenarios so people can hear the difference

Forget about this old one. Get the new Olympus lsp5
Wow.
Very noisy.
I'm sure this is related to a bad recording level.
If the level would have set right there would not be that extrem noise.
Did you see the subtitles? I purposely recorded underexposed and at diff levels, then boosted in post so you can hear the noise
@@TofuShop Yes.
But what is the point.
I can get a noisy signal with most of the recording equipments, especially with mic‘s, when I boost the level with +30db in post.
I know what you want to show but for me it is clear that the Sony will produce noise even when it is a very good recorder in it‘s price range.
@@diderichlangmannen There was a LOT of noise in the +30 post, yes you have a good ear! But c'mon, at the +10, there's really NOT a lot of noise! Especially for a simple low-price recorder as this!?! A little too critical perhaps?
@@donko3674 It simply makes absolutely no sense to record with allow level and then boost the signal +30% in post.
It shows that this guy did not understood how recording works.
Noise is there in any kind of equipment. This is why there is something like "signal-to-noise-ratio" that tells you how close your recorded signal is to the noise floor.
It would had been clever to make exactly this test so we all could hear how noisy this recorder is in real life!
@@diderichlangmannen Sometimes when u are recording in a dynamic environment in manual audio level mode, u cant always keep audio levels in the perfect range all the time and will need to underexpose audio so u are not clipping, but then boost audio in post and clean up the noise. That was a ton of white noise.
Yes, i explain that in the video. And in the comments
The internal battery is what kills it for me. That is literally what separates pro grade from amateur. If its battery dies while recording you can't switch it out and be on your way. Or if the internal battery goes bad it now becomes a waste of money and a disposable item. I hate that. The Roland R-07 is better sounds better for this type of recorder, and is much less expensive. Frankly a Zoom F1sp with interchangeable capsules is even better yet, though a bit bulkier, but not much.
Understandable, everyone has their own use cases and preferences
not impressed for the money. it seems only good for being a portable voice recording and non professional work. music no way. it lacks color. also it has way too much noise. Can't even compare to the D10.
Nah. Not good at all.
