I grew up in the ''troubles'' from a mixed background mum was protestant dad was Catholic and i had some cousins, uncles who were staunch Republicans on my dads side and had an uncle in the UDR and relatives in the Orange order on my mums side and we always have and always will remain very close as they are all family. I was raised Catholic and Nationalist with a very small n but was brought up to take people at face value and to respect all life. My own kids now have absolutely no interest in green/orange politics and have friends in both communities my eldest son plays football with a team mostly from a Protestant background and some of those guys are his closest friends. Would i like to see a united Ireland? Yes but only if both communities accepted it and my only reason for wanting to see it happen is because Northern Ireland has been kept the most deprived area in the Union with very little investment and for as long as their is a Tory government this will remain the case and no matter what nonsense some say about the South they have a far higher standard of living than we have in the North, i have seen that for myself having worked in the Republic their investment in communities is far higher than what we receive. This is a conversation between two people on totally different levels. Yes a great dscussion and good to see Jamie Bryson ejoying the conversation. He is constantly belittled and laughed at in Nationalist circles yet comes across here as very accommodating and reasonable. Joe is correct in that it is business and jobs that people care about because that is what generates prosperity for all. The NI protocol has simply opened up opportunities for NI businessses to work with the South and the rest of the EU in a way that British companies now can't. Because of this advantage there is zero chance of NI leaving the UK anytime soon, why give up that advantage? Similarily we can all identify (and have passports to prove it) as British or Irish or indeed both. Embrace the fact that NI consists of two nations and that the Tricolour is simply as legitimate as the Union Jack. Educate children in the same schools. These are the things that will kill off sectarianism in our society once and for all!
2 peoples and only one piece of land means one side has to lose… indigenous Irish have lost for 100 years… demographics dictate very soon it will be the turn of the Scots planters to lose and lose for good. To maintain the union will be like pushing water up-hill… we are in the end game for the NI state.
The only outcome is tolerance of each other, violence never worked and set back the reunification of Ireland by generations....I think we should learn from the past, like in Australia the aboriginal flag is flown beside the Aussie flag on government buildings and commemorations..same should happen in the north
Joe cant listen , when someone is speaking , he is thinking of his next sentence .
