I love that he has like.. the attitude of a hard rock drummer and looks like he's playing something rudimentary but ballsy, but he's playing crazy prog metal... makes it look that easy
I love the first album the most in general but I know what you mean. There's something about the first albums riffs and tone that is just way more fun than the rest.
@CAGRIND I forget what brand he uses but he uses 5B i believe, i think they are Vaters. As far as the Onyx, he actually uses that for his snare head, and yeah it rules. He needs 2 ply heads for sure, he absolutely destroys the 1ply heads after a 30 minute set haha.
Jeezus effin christ everyone is always on Matt's balls about how incredibly awesome he is. Clearly he is a machine sent back through time to show us mere mortals how its done.
I have literally never seen anyone do SO MUCH with such a small set. This guy is absolutely incredible. I'm so glad Periphery will finally have an album soon.
Makes it look absolutely effortless! Not to mention the few times he changed between cross-sticking and playing open handed. Couldnt even hear the difference!
@andlungs86 He played a roland td-20 which was hooked up to superior 2.0. This way we could get his feel and also have the samples i like to use. Best of both worlds!
Matt seems to be on a whole other level of drumming. It's like he's directing an orchestra with the swing of the drum sticks. He really feels the music. Love this guy.
Such young fury from these fellas! The quote goes like this? "When you are young, you have to fight harder When you get old, you have to fight smarter." These here d'jentlemen have progressed volumes, but look at the unmatched passion here!
I love the way that even though this guy is playing probably the most technical stuff going these days and stuff that requires an amazing memory, he has the most simple of set ups and doesn't seem to over-speculate his set up. A truely tallented guy!
Honestly 2:30 to the end... one of the best drum performances I have seen for this genre. There were some mistakes like that extra back beat at 2:00 but its soo pocket its crazy. this guy gets mad tone out of those drums too, like every hit sounds fantastic.
@dhinge the "real thing" you are referring to is either underpowered sounding or is loaded with samples after being edited, and quantized to the grid, which makes it no more "real", in addtion to that the detail and variance within said samples is much less than superior, so it actually sounds more fake. At the end of the day we will do whatever sounds best to us, so far superior has been the means to that end.
Awesome to watch a drummer that feels every note of the music...not that the guitar playing wasn't tight...but when a drummer is that in sync with the music it just goes WAY over the top...hella nicely done, gents!
its so sick I can't get anyone to wrap their minds around this style of music thanks for the inspiration. When I first saw misha playing his songs in his house sometimes in his underware no less I just thought wow I've been playing the guitar all wrong soooooo sick keep it up hopefully I will see ya'll in L.A. sometime soon
that ride part is insane!!! It looks like a stop motion camera his arm is moving so fast between the ride and his snare....you can only see it in a few frames.lol....very sick....
hey dude! im glad you like it! but also just want to clarify....the part at 2:00 isnt an extra beat, its just a displacement of the beat. notice how the drums stay on with mishas guitar playing... instead of hitting the cymbals on the quarter notes to bring in the verse, im just changing it up with a triplet fill on the bass drum. t
Matt is just having fun. i enjoy polyrythms, its just fun to play! and the accents just sound awesome! Alot of people dont understand it and say its just "stupid" or "technical". we just have fun with this stuff!
As far as i'm aware, almost all modern metal drum recordings have samples mixed in. Primarily to the kick and snare. Recording on an electric drum kit and triggering via Superior Drummer 2.0 gives you exactly the same performance ...on perfectly recorded drums! It's a no brainer and effective solution to recording in a quiet apartment.
This is true, the only thing that's been holding me back from doing this is a lack of good recording equipment, especially my slow ass computer. I got a job recently so now I'm saving up to be able to buy all the shit i've been trying to get at for like 3 years now. I've been trying to work around it as best as I can and it doesn't help when no one in a city as big as NYC can play drums with this kind of control over rhythm
That's pretty crazy, you're slamming them so hard they sound like my A custom crashes. I've just got to say as a fellow drummer the thing I admired most about these videos is that even on a minimalistic setup you can still out-drum a ton of people with larger sets and forests of cymbals. I wish I could find a guitarist as... percussion oriented as Bulb. I can actually write and play Djenty beats, but none of the musicians around me seem to appreciate the complexity of it.
@musicisthemessage I love Matt's drumming, you can relate to it. When I watch Travis drum, it seems so surreal. Maybe it's the way he has his kit set up?
soo... how come the first album's drums weren't done on this kit? sounds fantastic in there. The e-kit/pro tools or whatever had more cymbal variety i guess but daaamn son this is great
Damn, Matt is siiiick. I hear he gives drum lessons when you guys aren't touring? Also did I hear someone ask if he missed a beat? (haha)! I'm also not seeing him break three cymbals with one swing of the stick. Now THAT would be a metal video. Hopefully you guys come within the New Orleans vicinity, I'd like to catch your live show.
It's nice to see that you don't need a ridiculously large drum set to play this kind of awesome music. Like Hellhammers drum kit for example, even though the genres do differ.
I love that he has like.. the attitude of a hard rock drummer and looks like he's playing something rudimentary but ballsy, but he's playing crazy prog metal... makes it look that easy
that's why it's so annoying LOL this shit is so difficult and he does it so easily.
Still rocking the V-neck six years ago, loves it
+Lachy Toy right. props on the thooooooorin pick too.
Lachy Toy I think I’d be surprised if he wasn’t
Even after all these years, the instrumentals of the first album are still my favorite. I always come back to listen to them.
I love the first album the most in general but I know what you mean. There's something about the first albums riffs and tone that is just way more fun than the rest.
@CAGRIND I forget what brand he uses but he uses 5B i believe, i think they are Vaters.

Jeezus effin christ everyone is always on Matt's balls about how incredibly awesome he is. Clearly he is a machine sent back through time to show us mere mortals how its done.
They should rerecord the first album with real drums as well as a Spencer who can actually now scream properly.
Nothing wrong with P1. Leave it the way it is.
Mert Gurcan Actually I think Spencer's screams aren't bad... they are kinda refreshing to hear, more kinda "rockerish" if that makes any sense
Mert Gurcan I'm guessing I'm not the only one who didn't like the fact that they used programmed drums on that album?
Yep.
2:30 RIP snare
@jacosmith86 Nah Matt played the parts on an electronic kit and we plugged the midi into s2.0
I love the constant snare chatter. Really gives a sense of freeflow and tension at the same time.
I have literally never seen anyone do SO MUCH with such a small set. This guy is absolutely incredible.
I'm so glad Periphery will finally have an album soon.
they're gonna become huge :s
You were right.
Hard to believe this was 6 years ago. Jesus.
It's 8 years now!
boy do I have news for you now.
Hard to believe this was 9 years ago. Jesus.
It’s 11 years old now
Makes it look absolutely effortless!
Not to mention the few times he changed between cross-sticking and playing open handed. Couldnt even hear the difference!
@andlungs86 He played a roland td-20 which was hooked up to superior 2.0. This way we could get his feel and also have the samples i like to use. Best of both worlds!
@dhinge You not only can, but do get him! He played on a roland td-20 hooked up to superior drummer. Best of both worlds son.
2:56 lmao chill down Matt boi Hitting the microphone.
Matt seems to be on a whole other level of drumming. It's like he's directing an orchestra with the swing of the drum sticks. He really feels the music. Love this guy.

Why write it like d'jent? It's pronounced like "gent", so you can still say and write djent instead of saying "de-jent" haha
I love the way that even though this guy is playing probably the most technical stuff going these days and stuff that requires an amazing memory, he has the most simple of set ups and doesn't seem to over-speculate his set up. A truely tallented guy!
The nod of approval at the end was great.
i respect Matt the Man for being able to develop uber djenty grooves on a simple kit
Why wouldn't he be able to? Grooves aren't about fills
Honestly 2:30 to the end... one of the best drum performances I have seen for this genre. There were some mistakes like that extra back beat at 2:00 but its soo pocket its crazy. this guy gets mad tone out of those drums too, like every hit sounds fantastic.

i love the chorus part man
easily my favorite drummer
That is damn tight! I rarely hear people playing in such unison!
They mostly play to clicks. Musicians end up tight if they do that all the time
Also they're both geniuses.
wow, thats so awesome for you!
Awesome to watch a drummer that feels every note of the music...not that the guitar playing wasn't tight...but when a drummer is that in sync with the music it just goes WAY over the top...hella nicely done, gents!
i love how naturally matt plays drums. everything he does you can just see all of his passion.
i just picked up the album.......i was blown away.....come to london NOW!!! please.
I listen Periphery and DT in Wien, you guyz are amazing : ) all the best from Serbia!
Damn, still watching this today haha! Crazy how far they've come.
lol this guys so loosey goosey dont see such a small kit in metal so much, i love it !
@OeeOO now he plays with 2 crashes (one of which doubles as a ride like in the video) plus a stack and a china
The sheer power of this guy's playing is amazing.
that snare sound is incredible
I really like the sound of the kick drum and snare!
Awesome. I'm looking forward to see Matt & the rest of the guys Jan. 25th in Sweden. Keep on slammin' Matt !
it's so cool to just watch matt play with so much fkn groove and feel... eye candy
loveee his style... he is awsomee very very good drummer
its so sick I can't get anyone to wrap their minds around this style of music thanks for the inspiration. When I first saw misha playing his songs in his house sometimes in his underware no less I just thought wow I've been playing the guitar all wrong soooooo sick keep it up hopefully I will see ya'll in L.A. sometime soon

I am liking the instrumental much more! Thank you guys!
when i listen to your songs i'm thinking ' the drumkit must be big' it's so cool to see someone get that sound out of that small drumkit.
I love his energy
@cacaface123 no need to be! they are both awesome and from completely different styles/schools of drumming!
I thoroughly enjoyed this!!
woahh soo groovy yet powerful this guy is just...unhuman dude 0_0
I love that snare.
Matt is probably the most fun drummer to watch that I know of.
funk masters,

im going to have listening party with the instrumental CD,
FInally seeing you guys when you come to west hollywood in november!!@#~
would love to film you guys as well.
so many ghost notes on the snare...its brilliantly assembled
hey dude! im glad you like it! but also just want to clarify....the part at 2:00 isnt an extra beat, its just a displacement of the beat. notice how the drums stay on with mishas guitar playing... instead of hitting the cymbals on the quarter notes to bring in the verse, im just changing it up with a triplet fill on the bass drum. t
It is so enjoyable to watch matt play
Matt Halpern and Navene Koperweis are two of my biggest idols
theyre both young too, it nuts
Matt is just having fun. i enjoy polyrythms, its just fun to play! and the accents just sound awesome! Alot of people dont understand it and say its just "stupid" or "technical". we just have fun with this stuff!
@2:39 will be smoothed out and cleaned up in the future boys. Don't you worry.
@Periphery jesus, how do you guys remember such intense music? all the syncopations and such (especially the drummer)
perfect!! ;) love your drumming bro!

He dose the most INSANE thing on the floor tom at :22 seconds.
this guy has such a unique sense of time !
These guys are gunna be HUGE!

gorgeous music, keep groovin Bulb.
Please keep grovin, for all of our sakes.
I love the way he gets SO into it, thats the kind of drummer we need for our band. Anyone fancy doing a youtube colab?
beyond awesome :)
awesome, totally awesome, small kit no bullshit! Periphery! LOVE THAT SHIT!
you guys should make a jam video of matt and bulb doing the walk!
He was KILLING that drumkit tastely. How awesome.
This is true, the only thing that's been holding me back from doing this is a lack of good recording equipment, especially my slow ass computer. I've been trying to work around it as best as I can and it doesn't help when no one in a city as big as NYC can play drums with this kind of control over rhythm
i enjoy a light jog, every now and then
That's pretty crazy, you're slamming them so hard they sound like my A custom crashes.

I don't know why, but that little snippet at 1:02 makes me really happy
that snare sounds soo wicked, if i could tune like that ....
awesome style
2019 y este video todavía es la cumbia
keep this sound dudes, this is awesome.
@musicisthemessage I love Matt's drumming, you can relate to it. When I watch Travis drum, it seems so surreal. Maybe it's the way he has his kit set up?
Thats Snare is Delightful!
i love you guys
What a beast!
@ameliorate2695 i know he was in the band, but i didnt know sea was on hiatus. in tht case, hell yes. tht would be awesome
Dave Weckl played at my TAFE last week with Mike Stern and co. All I can say is "Oh my gawd!"....
England is waiting for peripheryto tour. WHEN??? Don't take too long boys
soo... how come the first album's drums weren't done on this kit? sounds fantastic in there. The e-kit/pro tools or whatever had more cymbal variety i guess but daaamn son this is great
Seeing Matt Halpern and Matt Greiner jamming in a room would be fucking amazing
Me too. That bit shows really limb independence and sounds amazing.
new drummer is nothing short of amazing
Damn, Matt is siiiick. I hear he gives drum lessons when you guys aren't touring? Also did I hear someone ask if he missed a beat? (haha)! I'm also not seeing him break three cymbals with one swing of the stick. Now THAT would be a metal video.

@GHdrumchannel Its obviously me!
Man I’ve gotta go back and listen to the entire self title now, it’s been a while
Holy crap, that was great!
COOL!
Damn.... he is a beast..... makes that small kit scream!!!!
Put that album out, im dyin over here. lol.
and a damn good one at that, man
Periphery! Love that shit!
Yessir!
cheers djents ;)
this is rather good, and gimmick free!
It's nice to see that you don't need a ridiculously large drum set to play this kind of awesome music. Like Hellhammers drum kit for example, even though the genres do differ.
