Basically, both guys are playing to their base, hoping to pick off people in the middle. A true journalist would allow Stephen to talk, pick up on the whole "show, don't tell" thing, then ask follow-up questions, like: "So Bannon's influence in the campaign was minimal? ... I know that you're saying Trump was his own strategist, but how much influence would you say did Bannon have in the campaign?" This would allow for some insightful answers from Stephen, based on first-hand experience, about what went on in the campaign. But we never got to that because Tapper was so focused on trying to make the Trump administration look bad by ignoring the "show, don't tell" answers from Stephen.
