This video commentary is a load of crap. Shame on whoever wrote this....
This whole video is terrible.
I stopped at 1:59. Maybe whoever did this video should check out Mike Williams at Sage of Quay. He has the real scoop on the Beatles. Has been seriously investigating for 8 yrs. It will blow your mind.
Exactly. The guy who wrote this up knows nothing. After Pet Sounds the Beach Boys produced "Good Vibrations". Arguably the high point for the Beach Boys. One song stealing a march even on the Beatles for a brief moment. The high point for everybody. Stealing a march on everybody. Cutting edge new sound, new innovation, new "vibrations". How could anyone comparing the Beach Boys to the Beatles leave out "Good Vibrations"? But the Beach Boys had effectively run their course. Leaving behind a legacy of enjoyment, inspiration and feel good for millions. The Beatles always were and continued to be the bigger game. Even in breaking up and going separate ways the four Beatles each in their own individual way continued to expand the range and content of popular music with new sounds, innovations, and themes, political, religious, controversial, philosophical... But always challenging... Always cutting edge. Always new. A range and breadth the Beach Boys could never hope to match.
Whoever wrote this video commentary does not get just how good each band really was. Does justice to neither of them.
@@AndreainAkron1 Ole Sage off base bout Fabs playin own music, outtakes prove him wrong
@PaulFormentos Sorry, didn't understand your sentence structure.
No one ever thought the Beach Boys were better than The Beatles. BTW-I'm a Beach Boys fan.
Brian was on the same level as the Beatles. Unfortunately the rest of the band weren’t
Dennis Wilson also knew the Beatles were better.
@ Dennis believed that Brian was creating music beyond anyone else
McCartney did think of them as a rival and equals but this video goes a bit overboard
Paul McCartney sure did, when he heard Pet Sounds. It lit a fire under him.
Not so the other three, unlike what is said in this vid.
Folks there have been thousands of brilliant songwritters and groups. The big picture is that Beatles were the colossus of 20th century, what they did was world wide and complete domination. If you weren't there you can't understand. GREATNESS.
They were very successful but there were many cleverer song writers George Gershwin and Cole Porter just to name 2.
@@2011littlejohn1 I always thought the rivalry was between the Beatles and the Stones...
But with the Beach Boys? .lol.. No way ! This author is high on himself! 🤣
Gregory Martin is the oldest son of George Martin and does interviews on Twitter, dropping truth bombs and saying that the official Beatles narrative is far from the truth.
However they were not very good in concert.Great Studio musicians though.
@@CanopusJupiter In Europe, kids compared the Rolling Stones to the Beatles, but in the U.S., it was more about comparing the Beatles to the Beach Boys. The Beatles kind of sat in the middle, taking bits from both. They leaned more towards rock than the Beach Boys’ pop style, but they still had those amazing, complex vocal harmonies like the Beach Boys. That mix is what made the Beatles’ sound so unique-somewhere between the raw edge of the Stones and the smooth, polished harmonies of the Beach Boys
Did Brian Wilson "shock fans about the Beatles?" I musta missed it.
There was one small point of difference that was different with the bands. The Beatles had George Martin to direct and produce their songs and music during these times. Brian’ Wilson alone wrote, produced, directed and sang vocals on all thier masterpieces
Mike Love helped Brian write songs
"masterpieces"? No way!
Did Mike Love do more than come up with words?

When it comes to combining commercial success with creativity and innovation, no one comes close to The Beatles.
Paul says it was Pet Sounds that inspired Sgt. Pepper.
@@caveatemp Brian Wilson said it was Rubber Soul that inspired Pet Sounds, I think all musicians are at different times inspired by other musicians.
Not true
The Beatles were a social construct under government control. Most of the early songs they did not write. Rubber Soul was not written by the Beatles, the songs were already written for them. Sgt Pepper was a Billy Shears album, he replaced Paul.
@@nathanmiller2982 John Lennon told the truth when he said, "The Beatles are a myth."
Brian Wilson was a genius - and McCartney saw that - that's the truth
100%
They were both geniuses ? One , The Beatles, in a far shorter time had far more successes and power to move a whole generation of people. The found successes without touring. Ihave owed about just under 18 albums of the Beatles, but only two of the Beach Boys.
But why isn't the story told of how they are friends? It's just like the Stones; the story is about rivalry, but the reality is music is different from sports who cares how good your "competitors" album is? i hope he sells a lot. I mean outside of when you were actually in the store buying an album, only had so much money, that you had to choose one over the other (ok, I'll get this one next week). You gain inspiration by other folks work and that is the Beatles / Beach boy's story. This make it sound lie both parties were in a conference room strategizing over who will make the best record.
@@robiandolo A bit silly and narrow-minded, in that respect. McCartney was certainly an "eager beaver", but he ended up annoying the others by always pushing. I guess, it makes sense, that this video was only about McCartney in the Beatles. Without Lennon and the others, McCartney wasn't nearly as good on his own.
The Beatles had two geniuses in the same band.End of story!
I was there through it all. This is the first I have ever heard of a rivalry between the Beatles and the Beach Boys.
Me too, and I never heard a thing about it. I was a huge Beatles fan.
common knowledge... Pet Sounds begat Pepper, which caused Brian
Wilsons head to explode.
The Players tried to take the field
But the Marching Band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
They were friends. Listen to Back in the USSR - it's an unashamed tribute to the Beach Boys.
@@cliffhughes6010 of course they were friends. They went to India together. That doesn’t mean they were rivals. Paul and John loved Pet Sounds. That doesn’t mean that their entire career was based on rivalry. It was one album. One span of time.if Paul’s career was based on a rivalry he wouldn’t have been able to write songs after Brian had his breakdown. But as we all know, he did fantastic before he knew The Beach Boys and fantastic after The Beach Boys. He was influenced by many people. The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, Donovan, and many more that were active at the same time.
@nisar8009 The two groups tried to outdo each other album by album. They spurred each other on to greater things, the way John and Paul did.
I was 12 when the Beatles invaded America. That whole scene made me feel as if I were an adult and knew more about life than I did. It was a decade that changed everything about me. Some for the good, and some for the bad.
But the Beach Boys actual music was pretty much Brian Wilson collaborating with a bunch of studio musicians and having his brothers sing on top, and tour the songs. The Beatles were a true unit in which each member offered a significant, distinctive element. They were a true unit that had a perfect arc from beginning to end, whereas the Beach Boys were all over the place.
THE BEATLES got me into music. They will always be my favorites. I remember that in 1964 The Dave Clark Five were considered their number one rivals. By 65 The Stones became their main rivals and remained so until THE BEATLES broke-up. But in terms of American bands ,The Beach Boys . Four Seasons, and The Byrds from 64-66.Then The Doors and CCR from 67-70. Add in Paul Revere and the Raiders and The Monkees in there as well.
I remember their rivalrywith The DC5. AM radio stations used to do contests between them and the Beatles.
I was 11 when The Beatles hit the airwaves. I never thought songs could sound that fantastic & amazing!!! Beatlemania swept the world. What a time to be alive!
@@billjones8503 definitely! And it was a great time to grow up!
The Beach Boys weren’t surfers except for Dennis.
But it was their image. I was around back then and that’s what they portrayed.
When the Beatles first arrived in the US, the biggest American group was the Four Seasons. The Beach Boys never came close to the Beatles and neither did the Four Seasons. But I actually love the Beach Boys and the Seasons and Many, many others. But the Beatles are the absolute greatest of all for many reasons. So this debate is a bit silly. isn't it?
The greatest band of ALL time, the only one ; The Beatles , the rest it`s pure TALKING , there`s NOT other band in their level at all
@@rubencasares4167 Right on.
The Beatles had a huge energy, that blew everyone else away, as well as inspiring a multitude of others.
Enough of this nonsense. I am 74+ years old and I remember the 1960's very well (even though I did drop LSD). No one ever thought that the Beach Boys were any where close to being in the same league as The Beatles. I never met a single person who had a Pet Sounds album and I lived in Southern California and Upstate NY and traveled other places (including hitch-hiking across the country twice). Listening to the The Beach Boys would be like a man wearing skinny jeans to a boxing club (later in life I did join two boxing clubs).
Numerous songs on Revolver were recorded BEFORE Pet Sounds even came out! "Here, There and Everywhere" is all McCartney and it sounds nothing like anything on Pet Sounds. Revolver has 14 songs on it and Paul wrote only 5 1/2 or 5 3/4 songs (John contributed to "Yellow Submarine") . Paul was the ONLY one who was into any Beach Boys songs. The other 8+ songs were written by George and John and George was into Indian music and hard rock ("Taxman") and John was into psychedelic music, NOT Beach Boys skinny jeans stuff.
I am 72 and you are so right!! The Beach Boys were never, but NEVER as big or influencial as the Beatles. They were a surf music group. It got old fast. And Pet Sounds for me is unlistenable. except for two tracks. Do you have to take acid to appreciate it?
@@pattybarnes6988they were Jan and Dean with better harmonies.
The Beatles......Unbeatable!
No one at the time considered The Beach Boys as any competition for The Beatles, they weren't competition for The Rolling Stones either, or a lot of other bands either. They made beach party music, it wasn't serious stuff and it wasn't taken seriously.
I am 74+ years old and you are 100% correct. I remember that time period very well.
You say the Beach Boys only made "beach party music." If you ever listened to "The Beach Boys Today!" (especially side two), or "Pet Sounds", you might think otherwise.
You say the Beach Boys "were never taken seriously". Are you speaking for everyone? At the end of 1966, the voters in the number one music publication in the Beatles home country, England, "New Musical Express" voted the Beach Boys OVER the Beatles as their number one favorite. I don't know of any other group that ever did that.
(As an aside, I read somewhere that the Beatles appreciated the breather it gave them, for a moment, from the constant pressure of always being number one).
And, no, I'm not saying the Beach Boys were better than the Beatles. That would be ridiculous.
@@chrisfreeman9960 Generally speaking, The Beach Boys made beach party music. While they were writing songs like Good Vibrations and Wouldn't It Be Nice, The Beatles were writing lyrics like "She's well aquainted with the touch of a velvet hand like a lizard on a window pane". One band wrote party music, the other band wrote stuff that stretched and expanded minds across the globe. I like The Beach Boys too, but they were considered easy listening at the time.
Totally agree….only in retrospect did The Beach Boys surge more in popularity and appreciation as a feel good party band which leads to this revisionist spin on the historical perspective. Except for Brian, the Beach Boys didn’t even play instruments on their own recordings. They were a touring cover band on the road. The Beatles were great because they were inspired and influenced by everyone around them. Not just The Beach Boys. But it got us to watch this video.
The Beach Boys as a group actually made quite a lot of contributions, musically, to their own albums. Their first album was entirely the guys playing their own instruments. Pretty much on their second album, as well. By their third album, "Surfer Girl", Brian decided he'd rather work with studio musicians, and that's when the Wrecking Crew, began to come into play.
The Beach Boys contributed, musically, here and there, on their subsequent albums. But the lion's share was done by the Wrecking Crew. I don't know the fine points of it, only what I've read
But on Pet Sounds, Carl gave a lot of moral support to Brian. And when it came time to record, he played lead guitar on "That's Not Me", and joined the other studio musicians on "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and the instrumentals "Let's Go Away For Awhile" and "Pet Sounds." And Dennis played drums on "That's Not Me."
So to say that the Beach Boys never played any of their instruments on any of their albums is historically inaccurate. You could say revisionist.
The Beach Boys were never compared to the Beatles in any way, but they were appreciated more outside the U.S. When Brian played Pet Sounds for the suits at Capital, they were confused. They told Brian they were expecting songs about surfing, cars, and girls, and didn't know what to do with the new material. As a result, they gave it little promotion.
Whereas in England, Pet Sounds was received with wild enthusiasm. The music magazines raved about it. Groups like the Who loved it (all the members, not just Keith Moon). Musicians like Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton loved it.
The Beach Boys popularity in England and other countries never flagged, as it did in the U S., with the new music. In England, they loved Jimmy Hendrix, the Doors, The Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, etc...and the Beach Boys. So different in the U.S., their home country, where liking the Beach Boys was suddenly "not cool."
I don't know why there was suddenly such a marked difference between England (and Europe) and the U S.
Bruce Johnston said that there was a time in 1968 where the group would play New York City, and maybe 200 people would show up. Then they would play Europe, and sell out an entire tour...
For me a young adolescent, the Beatles first ventured beyond the rock model due to Harrison's inclusion of Indian musical influences. From there the Beatles expanded in all sorts of other ways. The Beach Boys, in my opinion, never reached the breadth of the Beatles; on the other hand, the Beatles' harmonies were not quite as amazing as the Beach Boys' and Good Vibrations -- which seemed to come out of nowhere -- was as experimental as any single thing the Beatles did. But, at the end of the day, does it really matter? They each made an amazing contribution to the soundtrack of my youth (along with a number of other great musicians/bands) and I wouldn't like to have missed any of them.
👍 great comment. 👉 for me, as an Australian ☝️ i think that both bands were great 🙏 both had a lot to offer. both bands made a huge impact in Australia 🇦🇺
They also ventured beyond the confines of rock with Yesterday and folky songs like I'll Follow the Sun ,I'Ive Just Seen a Face
that's a good description. Back then I thought the Beach Boys were ok but not my favorite. As the Beatles began to experiment with different kinds of music, then other groups began to do that too. After the Beatles released Rubber Soul, the Beach Boys began to do some experimenting too & that's the period where I began to like their music more. Good vibrations was produced during this time. The Beatles had a lot of competition over the years & I think it made them better & also made their competitor's music better too! There is a good movie (I think it was on Hulu) called How the Beatles Changed the World. It's very good & it talks about all of the changes that happened during that time.
No no no. Beatles did not consider the Beach Boys to be competition. However, the Brian Wilson did consider the Beatles to be competition. Brian' may have developed his later issues because of thinking this way.
Nail it, thank u...
In 1964 and 1965 The Dave Clark Five were a top act too.
Yeah, after "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was number one for 5 weeks, it moved down and was replaced with "Glad All Over" by the Dave Clark Five. I believe there were sensationalist writers who started proclaiming that the Beatles were done and the DC5 were the next big thing.
The beach boys owe a lot of their success to the musicians called the wrecking crew hal Blaine an example however good vibrations and heroes and villains are brilliant .
Succession musicians are only good as the music they’re directed to play. Brian was the one who wrote that music and directed them on how to play it.
McCartney has consistently stated that "Pet Sounds was a great, masterpiece of an album." The Beatles were influenced by the Beach Boys, but they were never truly rivals. When they were an active band, nobody rivaled the Beatles whether it was the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan or Brian Wilson & the Beach Boys.
Paul also said that " no one has been properly educated musically until they've heard 'Pet Sounds'". He also said he made sure all of his children heard it.
the beach boys didn't even make pet sounds. the wrecking crew played all the instruments. bass, drums. guitar. keyboards.
@@archangelmusic13 Brian Wilson wrote the music, arranged and produced as the Wrecking Crew played on it. That in itself is a big deal.
I thought that the main competitors to the Beatles were the Rolling Stones
True.
The Beatles never considered The Rolling Stones to be a threat to their supremacy. They knew that the Stones could never match them for creativity or innovation. The Stones were good at what they did while the Beatles constantly invented brand new things to be good at.
For a brief period of a year or so, the Beatles felt that Brian Wilson was beginning to come up fast behind them but they simply moved up a gear to produce Revolver and Sgt. Pepper and leave the Beach Boys floundering in their wake.
The only artist that The Beatles considered to be their true peer was Bob Dylan. Dylan inspired them to raise the standard of their lyrical content and grow out of the simple, juvenile, "boy-meets-girl" pop songs.
The Stones were great but always a step behind the Fabs. Not until the Beatles broke up, did the Stones emerge as the greatest rock n roll band in the early 70’s.
Don’t even mention The Beach Boys in the same sentence as The Beatles. I was there.
There were The Beatles, and then there was everyone else. 🍸
I was there. I remember both groups.
It takes one to know one. This is why talented people get to introduce and know each other
I know the Beatles liked the Beach Boys, but having grown up in the Sixties, I considered the Beach Boys a backwards-looking band that wrote songs about cars, surfing, and girls. They were not a sixties band at all, but a carry over from Paul Anka and Neil Sedaka. Their best songs had almost no lyrics--Barbara Ann, Help Me Rhonda and the like. I guess they harmonized well, but any one of the hits of the Mamas and Papas was better than anything the Beach Boys ever did. As for the Beatles, they were on a totally different level.
They had great lyrics and songs that were above and beyond anyone - the Little Girl I Once Knew, Pet Sounds, the second side of Today!
That’s exactly how I see it! 🤙 Well put….
This comment says more about your musical ignorance than anything. No one has bettered Pet Sounds despite many trying including the fab 4, Sergeant Pepper sounds dated today in comparison to Pet Sounds. Still considered the greatest album ever recorded. Sure the Beatles were more commercial successful, but Pet Sounds is Art!
The Beach Boys went beyond surfing, cars and girls by the mid-'60's. Have you taken the time to listen to "The Beach Boys Today!", or "Pet Sounds"?
You say you "guessed" they harmonized alright, but have you heard the harmony on "Don't Worry Baby"? Perfection. Have you heard their harmony on their song "The Warmth Of The Sun"?
The Momas and the Poppas did some nice work. I liked them. But did they ever put out a masterwork like "Good Vibrations"?
@@glennlove295 Love them both but the Beatles Light shines bright today and will for a long time the Bboys were all Brian and had no where near the the great rock and roll sound of the late 6o's that the Beatles had.
When the Beatles broke up, the Beach Boys kept touring. Playing sold out concerts for three more decades.
Brian Wilson didn't tour too much. I saw the Beach Boys and saw the tired old moves from decades before, for each song. The support act was better. At least The Beatles ended when they were on top.
Yeah, as their own cover band! 😂
So what.
Yes, They were touring But, still played their same old music from the 60's. Tho, I still like The Beach Boys
Sure, so did Paul Revere & The Raiders and many other 60s bands.
Brian Wilson was under extreme pressure from his father to keep writing and producing hits especially after The Beatles conquered America in ‘64 as no other band had succeeded to capture the essence of this country’s teenagers from outside of America. Mike Love was suppose to be Wilson’s co creator with the music but eventually was pushed aside. In the ‘60’s one had to continue to write along with adapting to the changing decade. Brian took on everything. Writing, Producing, Arranging which all became his beast of burden and succumbed to the pressure.
I grew up in California listening to The Beach Boys. I have to admit that The Beatles produced more eclectic and creative songs over their short time in the spotlight. I will name only 5 Beatle songs and you tell me which Beach Boys songs match up well. Ready?: Eleanor Rigby, Strawberry Fields, She's Leaving Home, Let It Be, Here Comes the Sun. Of course there are many many more I can add. At the end of the day, The Beach Boys were very niche. But, their vocal harmonies were amazing.
This whole video is questionable as it’s made up controversy , as The Beatles were never looking over their shoulders at The Beach Boys
Paul’s assessment has always been mine, The Beach Boys were too stuck in a Southern California sound. They were good but were a niche band.
Believe it or not, I have never heard a single song from this group. I hear Beatles every day, in my entire life. And I Feel Fine.
have you heard of tavistock or the frankfurt school. theodore adorno . im still a big beatles fan. ☝️
Many, many great hits in America. Sorry you missed it.
You are a goof
2 very different bands coming from 2 very different countries and conditions. The genius of Brian Wilson is evident in his amazing song "Surfs UP" which took pop music to a level which has never been surpassed by any other band. The Beatles legacy lives on with well crafted songs which are currently standing the test of time. Both bands created a whole era which was full of life and possibilities.
I already knew everything you said.
Hands down, there is no comparison. The Beatles spread around the world massively ten times. The Beatles had far many top hits and their music drove people far more than The Beach bumbs. There far more cover bands playing The Beatles' tunes. Take a vote. You'll find the truth.
Beach boys didn't reshape anything. No rivals really to the Fab4
I like the Beatles and the Beach Boys. 🙂
Beatles won. It was an unconditional defeat for the Beach Boys.
I was born in England, I was 10 when the sixties started, 20 when it ended. Never thru that period did I ever hear the Beach boys mentioned as rivals to the Beatles. This is something made up by Americans in an attempt try and glorify their involvement in 60s music. I also see similar vids comparing Pet Sounds to Sgt. Pepper. The Beatles were light years ahead.
How can Beach Boys be compared with the Beatles? These are different levels.
George Martin is the producing for the Beatles whereas Brian did most of the writing, arranging & production by himself. When the rest of the Beach Boys were on tour in the eastern Pacific, Brian was at home working with the Wrecking Crew session musicians. When they got back, the other Beach Boys were taken back. Love didn't want to get away from the "formula of girls, surf & cars." Whereas the others had to digest the songs. Overall, it was the very first concept album.
Paul McCartney also said that when he heard the recording of Pink Floyd's first album that was taking place at Abbey Road studio, he recognized that this was the future of music and that the Beatles did not have this musical ability.
I'm seventy one year old Southern American, so I have lived through it all. Hands down, The Beatles reign supreme. Having stated that, I love the Beach Boys, who wouldn't, but they are not even on the same astral plane.
Dream on!
The Beatles will go unchallenged as the greatest group of all time.
Sergeant Pepper greatest album.
Biggest seller of records to date.
I think that you are reading far too much into this.
The Beatles influenced a whole generation in a way that no one else ever has in every way.
The characterization of these bands having a "musical war" is stupid, stupid, stupid.
The Beach boys bore me to tears. Their topics were lame and the instruments were never meaningfully innovative.
I have lots of Beatles CDs in my music collection. I have ZERO Beach boys music and fully intend to keep it that way.
So just how exactly did Brian Wilson SHOCK fans about the Beatles?? No where in this video does Brian even talk about the Beatles let alone shock fans!
REVOLVER!
Only one Beach Boy, Dennis Wilson, was a surfer. The rest faked it. Ironicly, Dennis Wilson drowned...while swimming, not surfing.
The Beach Boys had hit records 2 years before the Beatles came to America.
The Beach Boys weren't even the best American band. No way you can compare them to the Beatles.
There is indeed a big difference between the two bands: The Beatles were, are, and will be the greatest band in the world, in many musical genres... Enough of the talking.

I thought Beatles and Stones were the best. Stones and Zeppelin are my favorites
Yeah, you're right. Have you ever known that Brian Wilson's preferred rock 'n' roll band is The Rolling Stones? When the Stones were recording their Between the Buttons album, Brian was there in the studio with them.
@@luizoswaldoabreu2752 yeah, I don’t consider The Beach Boys on the same planet as Stones and Beatles, especially in 63-72
Or anyone else for that matter. Cream and the Doors are other favorites of mine from the time
Wrong. Sgt Pepper's was not more complex than Pet Sounds. Quite the opposite. In the meantime, while Brian
Wilson was recording Surf's Up & Good vibrations, Paul McCartney was producing what John Lennon called his
granny music.
Brian Wilson was like Jimi Hendrix , on a totally other level.
The author of this video has no idea what good music is.
For me, as an obsessed popular music lover for 60 years, I can easily state that the Beach Boys cannot stand in the Beatles' shadow. But hey, I understand that people think it's the other way around. We are pushed into duality-thinking.
Never heard Paul say anything like this...
Hey Brian, Like you, my favorite Rolling Stone song is My Obsession (from Between the Buttons album) but listen to it on cassette and turn off the left channel (which should be the channel that silences the piano)... you can hear the true dynamics of the song... especially Mr. Wyman's bass!

@ Lay off the elephant tranquilizers, Keith. It’s true.
At least here we compare two groups writing beautiful music They always said the Rolling Stones were the Beatles rivals, but they lost all credibility after Brian Jones died Still, the competition was never realized at the time When they were big, we never thought of the Beach Boys as anything but surf music, that occasionally borrowed from Chuck Berry
You don't know what McCartney thought, and you don't know what Brian Wilson thought. Soulless, you have unsuccessfully attempted to suck others into your sick false " coverage" of these two incredible musicians.
The Beatles White album includes nods to half a dozen different genres... blues, country, metal and so on. It opens with 'Back in the USSR', an obvious Beach Boys Surfin sound. Back then I thought they were taking the 'P', but I'm sure it was written out of respect as well as showcasing their versatility.
Back in the USSR was actually part homage and part parody of Chuck Berry and his Back in The USA single from a number of years earlier.. The Beach Boys early sound ( surf sound) was heavily influenced by Berry's music as well.
Back in the USSR was a deliberate nod to the Beach boys, paying them respect and a great compliment. This was admitted by Paul way back then when I was16 years old'
Love em both but Beatles were revolutionary.
From the second I heard them in 1962 as a 12 year old cheeky schoolgirl, it was as if the universe had whispered into my ear to expect a musical earthquake. Read 'Beatles and Beacons' by Fran Raya. Say no more❤
Serious competitors? The Beach Boys? No. One album "Pet Sounds" was phenomenal and inspired Paul. That's pretty much it.
I tried listening to Pet Sounds and I just couldn't. It sounded like a collection of whacky discordant noise except for a couple of actual songs. And the songs weren't that impressive. I can't understand the raving about this album. I guess I am not musical enough. And remember, Paul was using LSD at the time he heard it. I always liked the Beach Boys, but there is no way they came anywhere close to the Beatles in any way. They were a nice, easy group that did surf and car songs with an occasional venture into different topics. I have never heard of anyone except Pail M. raving about Pet Sounds,
The Beach Boys had next to zero influence on John Lennon.
Give it a rest guys! Who cares?
Beach boys not even in the same league. Beach boys don’t even rank in biggest bands list.
There was never a serious rivalry between the 2 bands. Pet Sounds was the only threat to a Beatles release.
The Beatles never surfed or smelled the ocean air it was a clash of two worlds
None of the Beach Boys ever owned a hot rod.
England is surrounded on three sides by seas and ocean water. The Beatles had plenty ocean water to smell. And so what if they did? And who cares if they didn't surf? How does surfing and smelling the ocean come into it? If the Beatles wrote mainly about surfing they probably would have had almost no impact at all.
Pretty strong influence, I'd say. Their song "Here, There, And Everywhere" on Revolver was a direct result of John and Paul hearing Pet Sounds.
Additionally, both George Martin and McCartney have said there never would have been a Sgt. Pepper's album without Pet Sounds.
go away...
And George and John were never fans of Sgt. Pepper either. Paul may have felt some influence from The Beach Boys, but the the rest of The Beatles not so much.
And Brian would say there wouldn’t be a pet sounds without rubber soul
...without William Shepherd, aka Billy Shears?
Numerous songs on Revolver were recorded BEFORE Pet Sounds even came out! "Here, There and Everywhere" is all McCartney and it sounds like nothing on Pet Sounds. Revolver has 14 songs on it and Paul wrote 5 1/2. Paul was the only one who was into any Beach Boys songs.
This debate pits Paul against Brian, but omits to mention that the majority of truly innovative tracks came from John Lennon, and the competition between him and Paul inspired Paul to greater heights.
The Beach Boys were just that boys , The only one that surfed was Dennis Wilson . Charlie Manson said he wanted to kill those sissy Beach Boys but there just wasn't enough time , he was to into the Beatles "White Album" and LSD baby .
The Beach Boys were great, but are not even close to being in the class of the Beatles! The Beatle wrote and sang hundreds of great songs and the Beach Boys had about 7-10 good songs! There is no band that is in the class of the Beatles!
If there was any kind of rivalry at all (which I suspect was only a publicist's invention anyway), it was between the Beatles and the '65-''67 iteration of the Byrds, still the greatest American group ever. It's a shame that SO many great Byrds' tunes are virtually unknown except for their relatively few "hits" while ALL the Beatles songs have been examined under a microscope for at least the last half century or so. I LOVE the Beach Boys, but even though SURF'S UP is their last decent (not great, merely decent) album, I much prefer SUNFLOWER and it was indeed a joy to be 12 years old in 1965 and get to hear all the great music that was being played on the radio before the execrable Casey Kasem and his "Top 40" reduced everything down to a pretty homogenous listening experience, especially in the post-"Sgt. Pepper" world of portentous pretension!
Besides easily being the greatest musical artists of all time, the Beatles were so kool. The Beach Boys wère wearing those "Osmond Brothers Like" nerdy outfits.
I never liked the Beatles, nor did I like the Beach Boys.
My favorite group were the Rolling Stones, and they still are.
They sang about surfing but they were not surfers
I grew up in LA in the 1960’s. Brian was good but he was alone. The Beatles were a ranting family with even more new musicians from others. The Beatles were a more capable group where Brian was alone. The rest of the band was more about partying band. And yes it was tragic. Pressure and growth.
Only one Beach Boy ever surfed. Do your research before you spread false statements.
True - Dennis.
The Beach Boys were NOTHING compared to The Beatles. The Beatles influenced SO MANY aspects of music, culture, politics, fashion. The BB were square as heck. Furthermore, the Beatles made their own records. Brian Wilson used the Wrecking Crew Musicians to produce and develop his music. The Beatles experimented right in Abbey Road studios.
Drugs finished Brian Wilson. Pot rendered Paul a lightweight....A born melodicist, but a dopey lad.
That drugs are a dead end comes across loud and clear from all this 60's stuff.
Paul The Multi-Millionare?....Not Bad For A "dopey lad"
@@roberthutchins3435 Yes, not bad at all! A lucky, dopey lad.
Not even close. Clapton talked about being out with George in the 60’s, he said it was like he didn’t exist
The b boys were bubble gum.the beatles were masters at music.
Live and let die was a genius song from the man who wrote silly love songs. When Paul writes a love song as great God only knows the gates of heaven will open up for his arrival.
He already did. It's called 'Here, There and Everywhere'.
Enjoy the music. Please everything doesn’t have to be a competition. Love the sounds of the era and the music really made the era. The Beach Boys were trying to please an older era as they were restrained by Mr Wilson. Brian’s father in funding The Beach Boys felt he had creative input and control which may have curtailed the band’s ability to to create. If you have to have Dad’s input and approval it is difficult to to go very far into the future. The Beach Boys were and are a great group and thanks to Mr. Wilson for the funds that made the Band possible. But disagreement over outfits & expecting the men wear matching striped shirts for too long was limiting. In love with The Beatles and The Beach Boys, very glad hey have moved forward but left all of us some amazing music.
Good musicians don’t see each other as competition, but as inspiration….😕
No competition. Beatles all the way. the BB were not creative just fun.
Beach Boys weren't even close.
HOW did Brian Wilson SHOCK Fans About The Beatles? You never said! You DID mention what Paul thought about the Beach Boys many times.
McCartney has a lot of nerve - That Egomaniac had John Lennon and George Martin to help him. Brian was basically on his own !
Mccartney also had george harrison..
@davidmartin1455 I don't think he needed him ! Lol
True. That’s why The Beach Boys don’t even come close to comparing themselves to the Beatles.
@sallyfinch540 They never tried to compare themselves to any group. Brian Wilson was a genius back in the day. The most talented pop genius to ever come out of America.
And Billy Shears
I always felt the surfing music scene sounded bubble gummy, no match for the Beatles.."God only knows'" was the only song I liked from the Beach Boys...
undoubtedly the Beach boys were good BUT comparing them with the Beatles is like comparing a great Bordeaux to a coke, superb Vs good but not brilliant
Wrecking Crew took Beach Boys to the level of The Beatles for a few songs
The Wrecking Crew WAS the Beach Boys. Phoney A holes.
I kept hearing how great Pet Sounds was so I finally gave a listen this year. Ho Hum 🥱 - Now where's near Rubber Soul & The Beatlles!.
I was never a fan of either The Beatles or Beach Boys. I didn't have any use for the early Beatles stuff when they first "invaded" America, although I did like a few of their later songs. I liked more of the Beach boys' songs right from the beginning. The group that REALLY struck a chord with me was Credence Clearwater Revival. Their down home, all American, Southern swamp boogie sound suited my taste much more. I listen to them today, and realize that they would be on the COUNTRY charts; their music being far more COUNTRY than a lot of what is coming out of Nashville today. I later became a big fan of The Grateful Dead after the release of Workingman's Dead, and American Beauty, again, when their music began to reflect a more "country" influence, and remained a Deadhead, attending as many concerts as I could, until the death of Jerry Garcia.
A lot of talking. Created by someone who does not know what he is talking about.
Both groups were great...... but the BEATLES WERE more unique and talented to me.
The Beach Boys didn’t come close to the Beatles. Not one little bit.
And yet Wilson has been more influential in the last 30 years.
I think the commentator is being over-dramatic for effect,McCartney always admired Brian Wilson as he did Roy O.,Everly bros.,Eddie Cochrane etc,it pushed him to improve but he never to my knowledge saw it as a competition, you CAN like the music of both(and others) you know.
