The point was it doesn't matter. Zanka no Tachi is confirmed as being the strongest, most destructive Zanpukto - continued use would destroy the world. So in essence old man Yama is saying 'I might as well explain it, because what could you do?'. Though it was of course this hubris that led to his defeat, not for explaining his powers, but activating bankai in the first place.
