Let's face it. Shop Vac casters are terrible! The don't roll or swivel very well and are cheap plastic and loud.
In today's episode, I am going to show you how I upgraded my shop vac with some awesome new casters. After searching around for some new ones that could just plug into the holes of the shop vac and failing to find what I needed, I decided to modify the base of my shop vac in order to put new and improved casters on them. One thought- why not just build the base out of the X bracing and eliminate the circle piece- that solve the chiseling out of the drain, and if you drill into the factory caster hole that is filled with a dowel, then you don’t have to drill through the bottom. Good problem solving but some things to think about for next time

Also, crappy standard parts are no bueno. And I have a ShopVac brand shop vac that has the same lame casters. WHY?!

My wheels keep falling off. I literally bought the wet/dry vac like two months ago from lowes (Craftsman) 10-14 gallon one and the plastic mounts for the wheels are so cheaply made. The wheels are supposed to click in but they don't and as a result they keep falling out. Thanks for the Video, helped out.

Love the cart design using PVC. I don't like the idea of the cart free wheeling around the shop and bumping into things. My first thought was to cart it around on one of those cheap, fold up, hand trucks from Sam's or Costco.
Also you are losing suction even though you don't realize it. The flexible hose between the vac and the separator shrinks, or squeezes together, when you turn on the vac. That shrinking requires vacuum otherwise used for sucking up dust. If you could attach the vac and separator with hard pipe like PVC, that effect would go away for all practical purposes. Engineers call this effect capacitance. Every pipe and tank has an inherent stiffness which allows a change in volume/capacity under pressure or vacuum. The flex pipe has so much you can see it happening. The tank has much less, and you don't see it happening. Mathematically it is similar to electrical capacitance. Whether this is a big loss of suction I can't tell you, but I'm certain it is a measurable loss.
Another place you are losing suction is by having a larger tank on the vac. HP for HP, the larger tank will lose energy in its walls unless the walls are thicker/stiffer in the larger tank. And...also, since you're using the separator as the tank and not really using the big tank on the vac, you could go with the vac with the smallest tank that still has the HP and gives the suction you need. The smaller, more rigid, vac tank is more efficient than a larger one with the same motor guts.

WTH, dude I don't know what ur on !! I can't get those old casters off with a good pry bar! The castor housing began to crack! So gimme whatever u got just enough to get the castors off! 😊

Are the stock casters using some kind of proprietary shaft design? Why couldn't you just slide in better casters?
Great question! That’s exactly the issue. They are. It was infuriating. Ha! I tried to just replace those but couldn’t find anything that would fit. Hence the need for the whole project here. Thanks for the comment!
The wheels don't look any bigger, are they bigger than the old wheels? I would think 3" or 4" wheels are better. That vac would not even roll over electrical cords with the original wheels, and on paver brick driveway, it won't roll at all with the original casters. Oh well, at least I only paid $39 for mine at HD Black Friday door buster. Plus I used my famous Lowe's 10% off coupon, which HD accepted and got it for about $35. Takes the ting out of the lame wheels.
They were about the same size but glide way better than those stock plastic ones. I wasn't worried about taking it off road, just wanted smooth gliding.

This is terrific. I built the cart yesterday and I'm going to try to knock this out today. Question: if you had it to do over again, would you skip the circle and mount directly to the "X"? Or do one larger circle and no x?
Great to hear and great question! Hmm. Probably just the X. That allows less of a footprint. However the circle does provide a stable platform for the bottom of the dust collector.
@@diywithandrew , I tried just doing the X and it turned out to be a mistake. It was a significant challenge to get the cross pieces to be even and well supported across the bottom of the vacuum, which is definitely not flat. I ended up cutting little shims and gluing them in multiple places.
If doing it again, I'd either do exactly what you did or use a 2' circle and no x.

I thought about doing something similar but am hesitant to drill through the bottom of the shop vac. the reason being that if on the off chance I have a leak in the house or a pipe busts, I can suck it up with the shop vac. Do you think the screws would allow it to leak, or is the fit snug enough to keep water from leaking out? Thanks!
Ahh great thought. My idea was that this is a dedicated shop vac and not do wet with it, only saw dust. I suppose you could, maybe if you used rubber grommets/washers. I'm sure it would seal long enough to suck up water and dump before leaking.

I had the same concern so I used rubber plumbing washers inside the vac.
Consider some wide, heavy duty velcro on the bottom of the vacuum that connects to the roller base.
You can also throw a brick or 5lb weight in there just to guarantee it’s no going to tip, that would work well with the heavy duty Velcro
What casters did you get for yours? I did something similar but made a different base. Bought lockable casters from HD and they are horrible! They absolutely will not swivel. I wanted to be able to lock the system in place, which is why I went lockable.

Why not just get some better casters that would fit the same diameter rod of the old casters? That would save so much more time

Great video. I absolutely love my Ridgid shop vac but literally every time I use it I get so frustrated trying to pull it around by the hose as I’m using it because the casters won’t roll over the power cord. Drives me freakin crazy.
Can you not buy casters where you can take out the bad ones and slide in some upgrades?

So if you had to create the "X", is there a reason that 18" round platform/base was needed?
Great question, Shawn! That was my original idea but I realized that it would be too much material if that makes sense. I liked the "x" because it was less bulk around the bottom.
Or you could buy urethane wheeled pin casters from McMaster Carr and they go right into the stock vacuum feet.

Totally! The problem was I could not find ones that fit in the holes of the vacuum bottom

I imagine it would but I don’t use this for water. It is dedicated to the workshop for sawdust.

I am pretty sure it was about 18". I customized it to the exact layout of my particular shop vac.
