    I'd like to bring up, my boyfriend and I were going through the IMDB reviews for giggles, and among all the hateful comments complaining that it was terrible because it wasn't the same as g1, there was a person that said they came across it at their hotel and actually enjoyed the movie even though they knew literally nothing about the franchise. It warmed my heart

    When I saw draculauras outfits for the movie, I felt like something was just slightly off about them, like something was missing- but I couldn't pick my finger on it. Now I know what was nagging at me though. Its the lack of white in the color scheme. All of draculauras outfits are totally pink and black, but I guess the stylists overlooked that draculaura's color scheme has white in it as well. It really pops and makes the color pallete feel more...well rounded? The black, pink, and white look is just so iconically draculaura.

    I noticed something while watching the movie. Her first outfit mostly camouflage like she was trying to hide. The coming out of the dark outfit had a moon top but very simple skirt and jacket. It looked like something a human would wear. Around the middle the outfit with pink moons had a bit more prints and fur details like she was starting to embrace her monster side. And at the end she was wearing a fur coat, animal print skirt, a moon top that looked similar to the first top slightly sheerer. I think it was to symbolize that she accepted who she truly was. Just a weird thought. Love ur videos!

It felt like she had to choose between her two sides but she never hated being half human half wolf she hated that people hated her either way ? If you understood the movie better plz lighting me

    I find it a bit sad that Clawdeen's ears don't really look like they are her real ears - if that makes sense. Might be because of the budget of the movie, but it would've been nice if her ears would've been actually articulated so they'd look like part of her body and not like she is "wearing" them.
    On another note your top is absolutely fabulous!

    • @DarlingDollz
      @DarlingDollz  2 года назад +70

      I agree. They did a little CGI twitch in the opening of the movie, but were just still for the rest of it. I think having them move around more would have made her overall more expressive (and it would have complimented Miia's acting really well too imo)

    • @TheGrossDemon
      @TheGrossDemon 2 года назад +9

      I completely agree! I feel like budget shouldnt even be an issue when cosplayers are doing more for less. The ears she had looked less realistic than a pair you could buy off etsy, and when you considered they made technology to make ears (and tails) mimic your emotions, they could have done wwaaayyyyyyy better with the design of her ears. Costuming was seriously lacking in this movie.

    • @tylerd8289
      @tylerd8289 2 года назад +10

      @@TheGrossDemon I see your point but the tech that makes tails and ears move with the wearer's "emotions" are bulky novelties with the kind of battery life that isn't very good for a movie set, the ears are known for tangling in wigs so concealing the hardware with hair is nearly impossible, and the only movement that they have is that they wiggle unnaturally from side to side when the wearer is concentrated (so not even really tied to emotions). Imo if they couldn't swing CGI in every scene they should have just gone for really really nice fake ears. Maybe posable ones if they could manage that with shot to shot continuity.
      Though we also don't know what the budget was, if they had $50 to spend on ears they couldn't exactly spring for nice ones from independent artists, which start at $80. Not to mention that with things like that you need to buy multiples. It's true that cosplayers do "more for less" in a way, but cosplayers are typically costuming only themselves and only for their own approval. They don't have to costume 6 lead actors in multiple outfits plus all the extras while gaining studio approval. Like DD pointed out, a lot of these pieces look like they were purchased due to time and budget constraints. Most really spectacular cosplayers make everything by hand. That is immensely time consuming and while cosplayers are only paying for their materials, paying someone to make something like that for your film is also going to cost you their wages, and garment making is very expensive when the people doing it are paid what they're worth and not sweatshop wages.
      Even Disney with all the money in the world opted to get existing stormtrooper cosplayers to be their extras for one of their star wars shows instead of making their own costumes or having them rendered by VFX artists. It's just cheaper, faster, and easier to use things that already exist.
      If you wanna argue that they should have been given a bigger budget, I'd probably agree, if for no other reason than I'd like to see what this costuming team could have done with more money, but that isn't really the way these made for TV kids movies meant to sell toys work.

      @@tylerd8289 I think it would’ve been easier to have just bought the outfits. Draculaura could’ve gotten her clothes from popular j fashion brands like Liz Lisa, ma*rs or dear my love as an example. Frankie from popular preppy brands like Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger etc. and Clawdeen from 2000s cool girl brands like true religion, Bebe, Baby phat, Apple bottom, juicy couture and just simple jewelry with moon shaped stuff.
      Clothes like these would’ve suited them much more and look less cheap and outdated. Because this movie sadly looks like it was released in 2016 judging by the fashion.
      All in all this movie would’ve needed more current hair, fashion and make up trends.

      The Japanese brands you listed run very, very small, with the exception of DML who goes up to around a US 14. You don't know that they would have fit the actress. Also the average piece from any of those brands is $100+ before international shipping. Futher complicated by the fact that many Japanese brands don't ship internationally so you have to make use of a shopping service, which will cost even more. And again, you have to appease a studio who is giving you the money and gets final say in your choices.
      All the brands you listed trend expensive, actually. Not to mention the complication of having brand logos in your film that wasn't sponsored by those brands.
      Also they probably did purchase much of the outfits... thats what I said and what DD said....

      Yes, but we also have to remember that many people rely heavily on euphoria caused by nostalgia. This is the risk you run when you resurrect a cult classic of any genre. There are diehard fans who look back on things like Monster High that they got so much joy and security from as children (or teens or adults) and feel a strong connection to the brand as it was back then. When the line died it was left pristinely perfect in their memory. MGA bringing the line back but so heavily altered that it almost doesn’t resemble what they remembered it as can absolutely desecrate those core memories of blissful nostalgia. I like all three MH generations equally but I do understand why some people are reacting negatively.

    I maintain that there had to be scenes involving Heath & Lagoona that were cut. No way they would’ve used all that promo material money on them if they were THAT small of a role. Like I actually think Ghoulia has more lines than Lagoona and MIGHT be on par with Heath.

    Clawdeen being Afro latina makes her having one necklace as a consistent piece make a lot of sense as our culture values gold pieces you wear and never take off. I hope other children who watch the movie and happen to be like myself or Frankie see themselves represented in a way that tells them its okay to be themselves, that there are people who will love them for who they are and they should never be ashamed of themselves for being uniquely them.

    Frankie truly is the character ever, like I knew they were gonna be my fave because I am a simple person who sees a character who's nonbinary like me and gets very attached. But this time, it was 100% the right choice because like you said, every time Frankie was on screen, they were the highlight. Also the whole time I was watching I kept noticing outfit pieces of theirs that made me think the costume department hit up Hot Topic, which is truly so on brand so good for them.
    Also, the more people I hear talk about this movie, the more I think I am literally the only person that was genuinely surprised that Komos was the villain. The vibe I got from the beginning was he figured out Clawdeen was half human and was totally good with it and would like stand up to Bloodgood for her? I don't even know.
    I kinda liked the Clawdeen and Deuce thing, but the more I think about it, it's probably not because it was well done but because a) I've never vibed with Cleo and b) my taste in men is sad and cliche and I thought Deuce was kinda cute sorry not sorry lmao.

    I think the glasses thing with Duece might just be a filming thing, like a room being light enough to see in but its dark for the characters. They wanted to show off his eyes, but still needed it for the plot. Also they are tinted, so it would affect the color of everything for him, though I still feel others could see his eyes plenty well. He could also just be self-conscious of them, and so keeps bringing it up for an in-character explanation as well.

    i definitely didnt go in expecting too much, in fact i was kinda scared it would be terrible, but the moment it started i couldnt stop smiling, im just genuinely so happy that monster high is getting to continue at all, i was scared the franchise was going to be left to rust forever only a year or two ago. it definitely helped it was a decent movie, though you could for sure feel that it was a nickelodeon live action movie for sure. (well, i watched it on nickelodeon anyway, i dont know if they actually had any hand in making it, but it felt like it.)
    and oh my goosshhh i love frankie so much! genuinely the moment the movie was over i made them my discord icon, theyre definitely my favorite character so far, though only the live action one as the animated counterpart wasnt as full of personality and fun as the live action version. i just also sooo love that i get to see someone nonbinary on tv in one of my favorite franchises :]!!
    also for some reason the animated counterpart, i dont know if you saw it yet? is weirdly on a totally different continuity than the live action? like, in the live action frankie is made up of famous genius humans, but in the animated is made up of different monsters, and the school seems ignorant to draculauras witch status even though i thought it was kinda clear in the end of the movie? idk

The only acceptable backgrounder was the cyclops dude. Like I know they don’t have a horror movie budget, but like y’all don’t have a halloweentown budget either?? Like in halloweentown, there was ghost, skeletons, dog faced ppl, werecats, pumpkin head ppl, sea monsters, and they all actually looked like the monsters, even the witches and warlocks looked like witches and warlocks. It just turned me off from the whole movie. Like it was cute and all but it didn’t feel like MONSTER high to me. But anyway I just wanted to get this off my chest, idk if anyone else agrees hahaa😅and just to be clear I’m only talking about background characters here, the main cast wasn’t that bad, the only ones I really liked was Cleo, Frankie, and draculaura because to me they actually looked like monsters. Deuces cgi snakes were weird, ghoulia and abbey literally just looked like humans and clawdeens ears barely even moved😭

    Your shirt is so stinking cute. It looks so good on you too! I think that I’m just kind of sick of there always having to be a romance for the main characters. I know romance was a big part of the original (Draculara and Clawd,Scarah and Invsi Billy, Cleo and Duece all being so adorable) but it could have just been about the friendship and it would have been really great. Hell, maybe give the awesome song to Cleo and Duece when they start to get back together? I’m more than fine with shaking up relationships and exploiting new ships, I just really liked how the OG girls were friends first and I think that’s important for kids and adults to see. You don’t have to have a romantic relationship, it doesn’t have to be a priority to look for one, enjoy your friends. Especially since a lot of us like to see “found family” situations; Monster High is perfect to show found family and finding acceptance through friends. It’s a small nitpick honestly, the romance doesn’t hurt anything. Keep doing you, your videos are awesome!

    It was. Honestly, I'm eager to see more, maybe sticking with the cartoon since that's the most palpable format currently, but I'm a little worried. I loved Frankie and enjoyed some of the changes, but I fear for how G3 is gonna approach reintroducing legacy characters with all the wanton changes they've made. Jackson/Holt is probably going to be nonexistent if the cast is meant to be consistent across both formats. Monsters that were considered Q before executive meddling will probably remain meddled into being cis and straight if the Clawdeen having Deuce as a pseudo-love interest thing is any indication. Also, the concept of making Lagoona into a feisty Hispanic monster and calling it a day and making Ghoulia just another normal girl offers a troubling sign of how the international monsters and monsters with either symbolic or literal disability will operate in G3. I guess all I want at the end of the day is my other favorites (Finnegan, Skelita, Jackson/Holt) to be done justice with the same bomb treatment as Frankie. Also Heath is the spawn of Satan, and that's hilarious and already makes him my second favorite of this gen.

    The lack of a reasonable budget was blaring . The costume’s were bad, and not because of a time issue “it was the budget”.. I’m sure the younger targeted audience liked it, but the film overall was a bit cheesy, but they gave it a go. My biggest critique a live adaptation of a movie like Monster high where CGI is a must , costumes/makeup/and all types of special effect’s are a must “it demands a much larger budget than what they had to work with”, that being said Nick tried to do it on the cheap, and the movie suffered .

(I try to explain this when people are showing things they like to me, but they still seem to think I hated it :( )

    I finally caved and subscribed to Paramount+ so I could watch this on premiere day, and I was not disappointed. I expected a fun, colorful, cheesy, formulaic kids' musical, and that's what I got - along with amazing world-building and acting and songs that I have not stopped listening to. MH, Descendants, EAH, and the like are my escape from the real world. I like kids' movies as an adult because they're going to be fun, the songs will have positive messages, the villain will get their comeuppance, and there's always a big happy song at the end. So much of what I deal with at work, and in the politics where I live is so frustrating and negative. Things like this remind me there's good around, and I know this is going to end up being comfort viewing, like Descendants is. I adore this film and this franchise.
    I would love, if there are cut scenes with Lagoona and Heath, or with anyone, to see them on a DVD release. I want a DVD release so I can buy it and support it further. One of the perks of being an adult with a steady income and career is I can afford to spend money on the things I like. And since I want the sequel that's teased, I'm going to put my money toward the franchise. I'd also love a music video for "Triple Up", which might be my favorite song on the soundtrack that isn't in the movie.

    Its hard to seperete the movie from the director when alot of his racism is seen in it, not only in the casting but with the story too with it labeling how monsters snd humans are treated as one and the same even tho-monsters in this universe are systemtically oppressed like ???
    It just feels like its purly just cause its mh :/ if it was something like disneys zombies i doubt people would ignore its racist aspects as much and excuse it as being just a kids movie , if your gonna go hard on zombies then go hard on the mh movie too-or else it just comes off as you picking and choosing when to speak out on those issues depending on if you like the product or not
    Thats a similier issue i have with the bratz movie too-the only character who was accrautly casted was chloe-all the other girls who werent white got casted as people who look nothing like them

    I think the movie was not bad. I do think it's an odd introdction to G3, especially considering the cartoon is already inconsistent with the movie (and that's only 2 episodes in). I think it's funny that every main character has to have a crush on Deuce in every generation (Melody in the books, Frankie in G1, and now Clawdeen) but he always seems to get back to Cleo so that's fine with me. But I do wonder how the whole G3 was planned because it seems like , the movie is a readaptation and reimagination of G1, the dolls seem to have been designed after/during the movie's development and the cartoon is obvioulsy made after the dolls, which sounds like an insane way of planning for a doll line. Also, the movie really buried the idea of Jackson and Holt ever coming back

Hopefully we get to see more of Lagoona, Heath, Ghoulia and Abby in the next movie and they have more time to iron out any of the issues that may have been caused by lack of time. Strong disagree:
    Keeping some things the same is still vital in reboots. If you keep the same name of the character it doesn't make any sense to totally make them unrecognizable personality-wise and background-wise. We welcome a new take on them, sure! But it shouldn't be like it's invasion of the body-snatchers! If they wanted new personalities, they could have just made a new group of freshman monsters with new names and designs.
    You don't show up to a classic monster movie to find out Dracula, while dressed in cape and wearing fangs, is actually a goofy guy and just sells grass instead of drinking any blood. Everyone would say that isn't Dracula (just a cash-grab) and they'd be right. Nobody would be happy to see a Spider-man movie where Peter is just discovering his powers as a rich, older man with no personal problems.
    Reboots can add new hobbies to characters, maybe rewind time to show them before they were totally confident, but if you take out the parts of the character that were at the core of the character then they become twisted alternate-reality strangers to us.

    Your extremely insightful perspective always hooks me in on your videos so much! I know it is difficult as someone who's a sensitive bean, and susceptible to criticism for others to be so careless and strong with their dislike. I understand it's disheartening sometimes, and nigh-impossible other times to let negativity roll off of you. Especially when you're doing something like creating videos about your hobby you love so much. "Collecting little plastic women" (I absolutely love that phrase, btw).
    But. It's impossible to please everyone, as I'm sure you're aware. The fact that you continue to make these videos is so meaningful on so many levels just beyond the sharing of your hobby. THAT has infinite value. The amount of effort you put into being as inclusive as possible is super inspiring! So thank you for that! (Pictures of your mischievous kitty, when??)
    As for the movie- I super enjoyed it too! I think it very much appeals to the demographic it was meant for. Am not sure why so many adults find it in themselves to so strongly hate something that was not really meant for them. The details of the set were one of my favorite parts about it. Like- everything from the decor on the walls, to the way the "main 3" had their room arranged... to even the ceiling of their classroom being a mix of typical modern office space square panels with classical gothic/Victorian filigree.
    I feel like there was some budget cuts, or that perhaps their budget did not cover the costs of things they were expecting to be able and insert into the movie. That, to me, explains why there was a good few... holes. In plotlines and mentions. I also love all the actors and their work. I do hope they all go on to do amazing things. (Legit, Frankie was my fave and Cici did an amazing job portraying them. Sparked a new-found love for the character all around for me.)
    Am hyped for the possible sequel they teased! And I genuinely feel the movie did a fantastic job of laying the groundwork for the animated series. I feel that was its main intention. I hope that the animated series, as it airs more, touches on perhaps some of the features that the movie missed.
    Either way- thanks for another fantastic video! [Sorry for my comment being so long-winded. >.

    A lot of your thoughts on the movie mirrored mine. I don’t really pay attention to what parts of the fandom think when they are intentionally looking for things to hate, but when I saw some complaining that they didn’t like how the makeup looked or thought the outfits looked cheap…well it’s a TV movie. There’s only so much you can do. There’s a reason it’s been animated until this point, and even that hasn’t always been stellar either. And I have seen very little of Descendants, which is what I think this movie is trying very hard to be, but I agree that the make-up and costumes convinced me more than what I’ve seen of those movies. I was not taken out of it. And the thing is Monster High, as much as I enjoy it, the series is far from brilliantly written lol. So even though I enjoyed the movie and thought it was a decent entry point to Gen 3, I also had plenty of criticisms along with it. I personally found the music to be forgettable outside of one or two songs, but this is coming from someone already disliked most of the music from Monster High and couldn’t stand most of Boo York, Boo York because of it. I also thought breaking up Cleo and Deuce was unnecessary, Ghoulia is my fave character and while it’s nice to have her back in the series making her talk kind of misses the point, some of the dialogue tried really hard to be unnecessarily self-aware. But in the end, I liked the characters and believed in the friendship between the leads, and that’s really all that matters. Anyway great review 🧛‍♀️🐺🧟

    I don't understand why lagoona wasn't even coral pink like in the upcoming animated series, I just kept getting doja cat vibes. My favorite fits came from Frankie, I loved all their fits except for the plain black box shaped dress with the chunky plastic chain. Also cece said that they went through testing for the clothing, so I don't understand why the actress playing clawdeen didn't say anything about the fashions. Like I hated all clawdeens looks, except for the big purple fluffy jacket. And I'm not even gonna talk about ghoulia, cleo or dueces looks💀. Overall it was ok but it was just a cheesy nickelodeon movie, I didn't expect much. The cgi was something but it gets a pass because it's a kids tv movie.

I went into it with low expectations wanting a fun, cheesy low-budget movie with the characters I love and I was mostly happy with it. I hate how they changed Draculaura's character but overall I can see how a new generation would really love this version of MH, and the cast and crew (especially the director) seems like they really cared about the project, even if it's very different from G1. I feel like if these get sequels, the budget will be much higher, which means we'll get better effects, costumes and set design. For reference, just look at the quality jump from the first Z-O-M-B-I-E-S movie to the last one that came out last summer. Or the first and second descendants movie. But all in all, I did think this movie was pretty cute. If I were a kid now, I'd probably be obsessed with it the same way I was obsessed with MOST TV movies aimed at kids back in 2007-2010.
