My team's biggest idol, Reinaldo Lima, who was an ace, had to retire at 28 years of age because he had to have both meniscuses removed from his knees, such was the brutality of the defenders at the time. Anyone who says it's more difficult to play today doesn't know how defenders back then treated attackers. And another thing, Pelé would work in today's times, because he was strong, he was muscular, not even the cowardice of defenders could stop him.

BTW present offside rule had to make sure when the ball is passed, the receiver has to have atleast one opposition player in front of him, back then, the attacker had to have two defenders in front of him to not be offside fouled....

It's incredible how people talk about Pelé being someone "basic" in football, and many say that he is basically nothing compared to current players, or how all he does are simple plays.
And then we look at ourselves from the point of view of Pelé's time, field and pitch much worse than today, ball heavier and much more difficult to play, and he still did/invented dribbles that are still done today, basically creating several of the dribbles current versions (or at least early versions of them).

BTW present offside rule had to make sure when the ball is passed, the receiver has to have atleast one opposition player in front of him, back then, the attacker had to have two defenders in front of him to not be offside fouled....
