I first listened to this music as a student in the United States (about 35 years ago). This was recording made by Stokowski and the Houston Symphony. Later a recording by Haitink and the Concertgebouw (huge rumbling basses). But this version is quite something else. Shostakovich's orchestration is greatly tricky and most of the time a few instruments or a solo instrument is playing. Mravinsky's conducting is quite incredible. One does not need a program etc to listen to this remarkable music (only spoils it and introduces unnecessary stuff into the listening experience). The final movement is quite astonishing and the english horn solo has never been bettered. Many thanks for this wonderful post.
The 11th Symphony received a double world premiere October 30, 1957, when it was performed simultaneously in Moscow under Nathan Rakhin and in Leningrad under Mravinsky.
What a shame he cannot hold the orchestre at different moments! Number 71 of the score (violin entry), number 84 and so on... It doesn't deserve more views (as all the videos i have seen of the 11th)
Could it be that the soviet system, not caring for financial viability of the orchestra, produced better music? That capitalism is bad for artistic development?
+Alphons Nym, at the time it was performed people had no idea about financial viability. They could get decent salary , but there was nothing to spend the money. Even senior party members had only official cars (not their own ) , and I won't mistake if I say , most of Soviet people hardly thought of it. The point was the war not to happen anymore- it was partcularly important for those who underwent Leningrad siege. I don't think, this symphony is a product of Soviet system . That's true Shostakovich used here revolutionary songs , but it's more to express cynicism of what happened in his homeland . Basically the point of any revolution is that one day the victims/strugglers for freedom become murderers and vice-versa . In Russia it happened so many times in the period of 1905-1953 that a lot of people just couldn't find their place . Some of them got crazy , the others made suicide . One who was recently your friend , suddenly became KGB-informer , and then he himself was shot as an enemy of Soviet state. IMHO, that's the main point of this symphony.
Shostakovitch was an exceptionnal mind and person (he could remember what was played on a piano and replay it), and at the time, there was no distraction. Also the 11th was made after some significant trajectory.
Tedious picture of Mravinsky and the usual impertinent, irrelevant advertisements from RUclips may account for the small number of views for this classic recording.
@@zachcramer4246 No, the 12th uses music from Eisenstein's film 'October' about the Russian Revolution. At 5:29 in this symphony, too, music from 'October' is utilized.
the most underrated symphony of all times.

Good performance. Thank you very much.

Mravinsky no estrenó la sinfonia 11 de Shostakóvich. Estreno las sinfonias 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 y 12.
What a shame. Only 310 views. Recording by a great master with his orchestra.
Calm down. At the moment that I heard it there was more than 26.000 viewers...

28:48 is what you came for
28:56 the oppression starts here
Too me by far the greatest symphonic of his time and he was the last one after all too. Where have they gone?n

WAS THIS USED FOR THE MOVIE BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN
No
That was the 12th Symphony.

Love this....but still prefer Rostropovich's
Ma che c'entra Rostropovich? Grande violoncellista, mediocre direttore. Mravinsky non paragonabile, soprattutto dirigendo Shostakovich.
