TWO* of Charles Leon’s sons died in WW1. So two of Napoleon’s direct grandchildren were killed fighting for France in the First World War. We got this information from his daughter who said that one of HER sons died in WW1 as well. So that’s two direct grandsons and 1 great grandson of Napoleon’s claimed by the Great War.
yup
I could only find the records for one son Fernand Leon 1861- 9th December 1918 died Ile-de-France Paris. I couldn’t find out the circumstances of his death. I did find a list of siblings none of which died in WW1, interesting one died in Venezuela Charles Leon II 1855 - April 8th 1894
There is one descendant of Napoleon living in Spring Lake Park, MN.
@@suzettekath9860 I'm another DNA tested maternal side DNA national geographic helix labs DNA test I have a cousin that looks just like Napoleon with black hair! He's not a nice guy either! I I'm also related to the Austrian relatives Marie Antoinette and Louie and their children and Empress Maria Treasa Marie Antoinette mother Napoleon married a Hapsburg so that loops the DNA back around! So I'm related to Napoleon as well! Maternal DNA look at my picture you can see some resemblance as well !
When I found that out I thought it was quite poetic.
Wellington died in London when Alexandre Walewski was ambassador of France there. As such, he was officially invited by the King to the funeral but very reluctant, until one French diplomat, to avoid an offense, observed "I understand that you would not want to meet Wellington. But we just ask you to bury him"
sooooo French coded “we’re literally just asking you to bury him. please”
Did he go?
@@Winston.S.Churchilli think he did by being pressured to go
Napoleon's oldest brother Joseph, the former King of Naples and Spain, headed to the United States and built a very impressive mansion called Point Breeze which overlooked the Delaware River in Bordentown, NJ. There were descendents living in and around the area until 1967. I found this amazing as I live 25 mins away and used to work there. Probably drove by the grounds on rte 206 hundreds of times and never knew!?
Why impressed, american presidents at the time (Jefferson, Madison and Jimmy Monroe) were proFrench and many french migrated to US at the time.
awesome! 😎
@@szymonbaranowski8184 Hunterdon county here, where are those descendants now??
I'm from Baltimore and he's got relations buried in Loudoun Cemetery here which also happens to be a historic Civil War Cemetery. The Bonaparte name appears on several tombstones. If I'm not mistaken they may be related to this same brother you're talking about. So yeah, it would be interesting to find out who and where their living American descendants are now, if any? Fascinating!
Let's not forget that Jerome's first wife and great love was American Betsy Patterson Bonaparte .If you would lij-ke to know more about her and their American descendants I direct you to the book writtten by my aunt Claude Bourguignon Frasseto . There is a great script aboutr the story still waiting for a producer .It would anyway be much bettter than Ridley's Scott awful awful movie about her brother in law
For those who are interested, the painting right at the end is of Cardinal Richelieu at the siege of La Rochelle, in 1627. It was painted by Henri Motte in 1881. I think it's marvellous.
Richelieu!!!
Absolutely marvellous ... Those were great times...
Can't believe this video wasn't made by a 100K strong RUclipsr. Keep up the good work
Thank you, it means alot. Working on the script for the next video now. (It's triple the length of this one so it is taking some time)
Definitely agree!
@@Pumkincat Looking forward to that video...

Just wondering if his second son Waleski(sp?), died of stomach cancer as well... and if TOAX has stock. Hmm. Very much enjoyed your video and I will subscribe.
Just out of interest, my Auntie is directly related to the Walewski's. After Napoleons death, she married again to a D'Ornano and more children to him. My Aunts great grandmother was one of these children. She still has some letters written from Napoleon. the D'ornano brood have gone on to found and run SISLY cosmetics, a massive empire also.
Hi I'm related to Napoleon on maternal side DNA and also related to the Hapsburg family Empress Maria Treasa and her daughter Marie Antoinette and her daughter Maria Treasa so the DNA wrapped around! Looking for other relatives!
@Blissiimo im related to marija anastazijus walewskis and napoleon from my grandmas side i have a whole book of the family tree i could check if your aunties name is in it if you want. But the names are written in Lithuanian so i might have to translate the name birth year would help too,no need for second names as that is too private to share on the internet

The fact that napoleon had a decedent that died fighting for France in WW1 is CRAZY! Crazy fact
But quite a few French fought in WWI.

For a French citizen an absolute normality nothing kräääzy !
And one of his family member was in the French Resistance
Napoleon:
1. Great General.
2. Legal efforts in creating Napoleonic Law, important.
3. In psychology with the Napoleonic Complex, wonderful examination.
4. Even his baking/culinary efforts with the decadent Napoleon pastries.
Wow, these things make him one of the all-time brilliant men.
He was also the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of France.
one of the greatest man to have ever live and one of the most influential too
Great General is certainly questionable. In some regards, yes. In others, not so much.
His failed Alexandria campaign, for example, was not one of his brighter moments and in most regards was purely a matter of personal achievement rather than strategic.
His actions throughout Europe, however, caused untold amounts of human misery through unnecessary death, disease and SA. While brilliant in some regards, the man would be tried today as a War Criminal.
He liked sweets very much
@@Smile4theKillCam456he would be a war criminal TODAY. History must be examined according to the era's ethics.
This is a topic that has always fascinated me and also always shocked me how little people seem interested in.
Léon Bonaparte was also known for his (strong) resemblance with his father.
There also a rumour that when Napoléon died on Saint-Hélène, the plaster was very rare and the quality wasn't the best, some people even think that the Napoléon's death mask is actually Léon's one.
Very interesting video. You deserve more recognition.
Hello, I am a French fan of Napoléon's Empire. I have to congrutulate you for your job, this video is really a good work. It is a pleasure to see people interest by Napoléon, and who don't just say he was a fool, a racist and the worst tyrant of Franch history. Thanks so much. (excuse my english faults)
I am Australian and the more I learn about Napoleon 1, the more I admire him. He was a truly brilliant man.
He barely lost the Battle of Waterloo. The English were losing but the Prussians arrived in time.
This video was so professional I thought you had like 100k subscribers. Allow me to become your 199th.
This video deserves more recognition, great work.
10:39 I'm pretty sure that that portrait of Napoleon is the most accurate we have, since after he was presented it was said it looked exactly like him. Supposedly he was even shocked by how realistic and detailed it was, I feel that the one your using to compare his son to napoleon is accurate.

Bismarck is holding a tablet in his hands. As if he is about to check off one of things on his to do list.
You should do one about Napoleon III himself. He has a very underrated story and his successes haven’t been brought to light much. Not to mention his bravery when it came to wars
I've actually thought about it. He reigned longer than Napoleon I!
@@Pumkincat I guess it’s because of the crushing defeat by Prussia and the humiliation of the foundation of Germany at Versailles in the Palace of mirrors .
@@historyking9984 Sorry, when Napoleon I occupied the Prussian capital of Berlin, he stole the Quadriga from the Brandenburg Gate, resided in the Royal Palace, searched the Queen's private correspondence and published them in French newspapers. What humiliation are you talking about? Should the victorious Germans in 1871, in a war declared by the French, ask their vanquished enemies for permission to use the ancient palace of the former kings of the Bourbon dynasty? A dynasty, by the way, that the French people had tried to eradicate eighty years earlier.
@@thkempe The Prussians incited the war on purpose because Bismarck needed a war. The Ems Dispatch was edited to create a furor. It was hardly the French trying to destroy Prussia. The irony is that Napoleon III didn't want the war. He was a very sick man at that point. And perhaps it is a pity that Prussia won and unified Germany under their militaristic ethos. A United Germany would have been better off under the Wittelsbachs or even the Hapsburgs. The Empire might have lasted longer.

Thanks very much for writing this. Totally amazing, thank you.
I just discovered you and I got to say, I enjoy the way you layout the information. I also enjoy the personal touch you add to the information, and show what you find fascinating rather than just talk as if reading a script. Thank you, and subscribed.
I just saw this by chance and really enjoyed it. I bought a documentary about Napoleon a couple of months ago and was surprised that it was mentioned that he had a child by one of his mistresses. So I was happy to learn that he had two sons. Very interesting indeed. I’m interested in Napoleon because I live close to Austerlitz, or Slavkov in Czech. Thanks for your work on this.
Great video, I thought I knew all about Napoleon's life, but I did not know about his son with a Polish noblewoman. Learning such new things really shows that history is really vast.
And no more Paris treaties. There are so many other cities in France. How about a treaty of Versailles. Oh wait..........
I truly love learning about this much lesser known sides of History. Thanks so much!

My first video of yours and I loved the video. I am interested in this type of stuff. It makes history more alive and real knowing this.
Excellent video, very interesting. Looking forward to watching more!
Very interesting video! I learned a lot about Napoleon Bonaparte's descendants! Very helpful!
Excellent information, I knew of Napoleon’s Polish son, but not the other. I had never read or heard what happened to them. Thanks for educating me. You need to produce more videos. You have an excellent delivery.
yes
Very interesting, I know a great deal about Napoleon but knew very little about his sons. It’s never really talked about, great job on this video.
Thanks for clearing up this very confusing & neglected topic. I've read a lot & admire Napoleon I & even after all that study I never found as much information in books as I found here.
Fantastic video. Definitely on par to many big history channels! Liked and subscribed!

Fun stuff. Some interesting pronunciation and grammar but will watch a few more. Well done! It still amazes me that very large numbers of royals of various lineages still slosh about all over Europe. There is a VT video of the burial of (Her Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty) Zita whereat ALL of her titles are read aloud. They illustrate some of the intertwining of families.
Very interesting information. Good job on your research.
Excellent work. Very informative. Didn't one there were so treaties of Paris... Hysterical

My dad’s family comes from Corsica - where the Bonapartes originate. He looked exactly like Napoleon throughout his life. Did he have shared ancestry with the Little Corporal (French nick name for NB), I will probably never know.
Knowing the Bonapartes, it wouldn't be surprising if your dad was
You should try to conquer world. Maybe it will work, i dunno
@@redjirachi1 In Medieval in economical stable Places were folks did not migrated much around there it became commen that a lot for families with ties throughout the nearby areas became commen with the ongoing centuries. Like my grandfather´s in and around MÜNSTER in North-West Germany not to far from the border towards the Netherlands
Part of my family line goes back there down to the Eary Middle Ages in dependancy to the (back then) Duke-Bishops ruling over the vicinity
And Corsica for that part was a rich Island over centuries thanks to the passing by trade routes and for the trade goods of the Island tiself. Out of this comes this strong Regional Pride - feeling many Corse have even today
Well, the Bonapartes on Corsica were the bunopartes and they descended from Tuscany. Napoleons heritage is pretty Italian
Yes, this is to me why James A Michener´s Family Sagas sound so true basicly. those things rally happene. Even though not all the described details must not be correct because he had romanicised them ( as in Poland ) out of personsl reasons and also because Historians have found out bettter explanations for events and cultural issues
As with THE FORKS as an Eating Tool. Up to the age of Englightment FORKS were seen s DEViL´S TOOLS wven Martin Luther is quotede to have said he would personaly burn everyone alive on a Stack eating with a fork.
To Michener´s description in POLAND this had been just a sign of poverty.
Very well made video keep up the good work
Keep up the great work. Hopefully I can finish the video when I'm not dead tired. But driving while listening isn't the safest thing to do. So am downloading your video and will finish later.
I would just say that as an early youth having read so many biographies of Napoleon and happening to have many of his physical habits and characteristics, I did strenuous research on any other descendants of Napoleon Bonaparte admiring but seeing a dead end in the fate of the illustrious, tragically noble Prince of Rome. Though I found family lines and such; at the time I was unable to find anything. I really appreciate this information. Thank you. That's all.
Very good video. New stuff to me. Thanks.
Amazing video!

Makes me wonder if Napoleon III knew that Walewski was his cousin. Seems like an incredible coincidence, and "my uncle's old girlfriend's son" doesn't seem like a connection that would open doors to government positions.
Good job very interesting video. I hope you make more

Wow this video came at the right time because I was just watching a documentary on Napoleon the other day and I didn't know he had any outside kids until they mentioned it, and my first thought was wow I wonder happened to those kids now I know thanks for the video.

Napoléon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte, Duke of Reichstadt was his first and only official son. Though, he had a lot more children with his mistresses.
Napoleon acknowledged two illegitimate children: * Charles Léon, (1806-81) by Louise Catherine Eléonore Denuelle de la Plaigne * Count Alexandre Joseph Colonna-Walewski, (1810-68) by Countess Marie Walewska He may have had further unacknowledged illegitimate offspring as well: * Karl Eugin von Mühlfeld, by Victoria Kraus * Hélène Napoleone Bonaparte (1816-1910) by Albine de Montholon * Jules Barthélemy-Saint-Hilaire, whose mother remains unknown.

Thank you, I really enjoyed that. I’d just finished watching another video of yours. I meant to subscribe to that. Something like ‘Huntingdon Hall. Sad really. You mainly hear about the bigger people in war but the smaller people are just as interesting. If I may, I think you said that the soldier had very small mental capacity, is that correct? If so, what on earth was he doing in the army and allowed to run around with guns? I could have missed a bit as I went outside to feed the magpies
This one was also interesting. I don’t think I remember knowing that napoleon left descendants. Wow. Thank you for the work you put in, very professional 👍👍👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Fun fact : Alexandre Walewski had only one son (despite being married twice) and this son was also illegitimate since Alexandre had him with his mistress, the actress Rachel Félix (the son was legitimated by Alexandre).
Rachel also had a child with Arthur Bertrand, son of the Grand Marshal Bertrand. Arthur was born in Saint-Helena during Napoléon's exile...
André Walewski, Napoléon's great grandson, founded the taxis company G7 which still exists.
It was his taxis which were used in 1914 to transport the French reinforcement who stopped the German offensive at the first battle of the Marne.
After that, André enlisted as an officer, was wounded and won several decorations.
Thanks for this. Had no idea G7 was created by a Walewski and descendent of Napoleon. Use them fairly frequently. Very cool.
Actually even though napoleon had illegitimate child and might carried his name around, still it wasn't allowed to illegitimate child to succeed in the throne since it is custom by other european houses unless you use a good tactics but no when there father died there status became nothing unless you were a child of a noblewoman or a princess like napoleon ii
A Bonaparte served in Teddy Roosevelt’s cabinet as Attorney General and Secretary of the Navy, Charles Joseph Bonaparte. Grandson of Jerome Bonaparte, Napoleon’s youngest brother.
THANK YOU...
Just in case you don't know, count Walewski had a daughter that died at a very young age, I think four years old, while serving at Buenos Aires, and she's buried at Cementerio de la Recoleta.
Thank you, I had no idea.
Very interesting.
